Chapter 2014
Felicity immediately understood her intentions and nodded. âAlright, Iâll leave
you to it. Just call me if you need anything.â
âThanks, Mom.â
âWhy thank me? Iâm your mother.â
Felicity smiled wryly, clearly not fond of such formal words from her daughter.
Mackenzie chuckled. âEven if youâre my mom, I should still thank you for
always taking care of our son.â
âFine, have it your way.â
Felicity started to leave but stopped a few steps later. She pulled out a jade
pendant and handed it to Emmanuel.
âOh, Emmanuel, Mackenzie mentioned youâll be heading to Zovince soon. Iâve
got this jade pendant that once belonged to Sarah. If youâre interested, take it

with you~it might help you uncover more about her origins:
Emmanuel paused, still overwhelmed by his newfound fotherhood, and
gently handed his son back to Mackenzie before taking the pendent.
The pendant felt special to the touch, not something ordinary, though he
couldnât quite fell how valuable it was. But there was definitely something
unique about it.
âIt has the alphabet âSâ engraved on it, which is why I named her Sarah.â
Felicity continued, âEveryone wants to return to their roots. Although weâve always treated Sarah as part of the Quillen family, and sheâs buried in Heroâs Village, if the opportunity arises, we should still find her birth parents. They
deserve to know.â

Emmanuel agreed with her sentiments, clutching the pendant tightly as he
nodded
âNow, go on, enjoy your time as a family
Felicity smiled and discreetly left the room to give the couple some
muchâneeded privacy.
âMackenzie, is Caden asleep yet?â Emmanuel asked as he walked back over.
âYes, he is.*
Mackenzie shot him a playful glare. âYou really need to learn how to hold a
baby and try to finish work earlier so you can be home more. Otherwise,
when he grows up, he might not even recognize you!â
Emmanuel sighed with a wry smile and said, âYouâre right. Iâve been thinking that once I deal with Teddy and help Ethan become the leader, Iâll resign from all my military duties and stay with you and the baby. But the General wants
to recommend me to take his place.â
Mackenzie, understanding his dilemma and not wanting him to push the
decision onto her, smiled gently. âWell, if you do decide to take the position, I
wonât stay as Chairman of the Nuthana Chamber of Commerce either. If
youâre heading to the Northern Region, weâll follow you.â
âThatâs not happening.â
Emmanuel shook his head firmly. âThe Northern Region is too harsh for
women and children. If Caden grows up wanting to serve the country, Iâll fully
support him. But for now, I want him to have a happy childhood.â
Mackenzie nodded in agreement. âThatâs exactly what I was thinking. As
parents, thatâs the least we can do for him. Happiness is what matters most.â
While Mackenzie didnât outright say whether she supported Emmanuel taking
the marshalâs position, her words conveyed her feelings clearly enough.
Emmanuel understood, and it only strengthened his resolve.
After laying their sleeping son down, Mackenzie took Emmanuelâs hand

gently. âFor now, letâs not worry about that. Follow your heart when the time
comes, but right now, weâve got more pressing matters to handle.â
Emmanuel nodded. âI know. Iâve been with Ethan these past few days, and
heâs truly a good man who cares for the people. Heâs always on the frontlines,
suffering with the disaster victims and doing everything he can to help.â
Mackenzie smiled and added, âThatâs why you have to protect him. If he
succeeds in this relief effort, his support will skyrocket, and heâll have a reat
shot at becoming the leader.â
âDonât worry, Iâve got his back,â Emmanuel assured her, gripping her hand
tightly.
Their eyes locked, and the atmosphere between them heated up.
Though a new father, Emmanuel was no stranger to being a husband. He
couldnât resist pulling Mackenzie into a tight embrace and kissing her
passionately.

Mackenzie closed her eyes, savoring the rare moment of closeness:
Before long, their clothes were strewn about as the night carried on.
Letâs just say, they both hoped to give Caden a little sibling soon.
Exhausted from the past few days and the stormy night, Mackenzie, unlike
Emmanuelâwho had the strength of a warriorâsoon fell into a deep sleep.
The next morning, Mackenzie woke to the smell of breakfast.
âWow, itâs been ages since you made breakfast!â
She was clearly impressed.
The last time Emmanuel had cooked her breakfast was before their mission
to Dark Night Islands.
âThen eat up!â
He chuckled. âIâll be heading back to Ethan soon.â

As soon as he said that, a hint of frustration crossed his face. I canât stay with
my wife and kid, but Iâve got to go guard some old man instead. Life can
really be cruel sometimes.
Mackenzie, seeing his mood, squeezed his hand and said with a comforting
smile, âTake care of the important things first. Once the election is over and
youâre back, Iâll make you breakfast.â
âReally?â
Emmanuelâs eyes lit up with excitement.
âOf course! Just donât go telling me that while others charge for their cooking,
mine could cost you your life!â Mackenzie teased.
âHahaha! Iâd eat anything you makeâeven if itâs a rock!â Emmanuel laughed
joyfully.
The couple snuggled together, enjoying their brief time of peace.

As always, happy moments never lasted long. After breakfast, Emmanuel
had to return to Ethanâs side and continue his work in disaster relief.
Meanwhile, Mackenzie went back to the relief center to handle the logistics
and material distribution.
In just a couple of days, stories of the couple had spread throughout
Riverhaven. Whether in refugee camps, restaurants, tea shops, or even
flooded parlors, Emmanuel and Mackenzie were the talk of the town.

âHave you heard? The man next to our prime minister is a real hero. Not only
did he take down hijackers on a plane, but he also singleâhandedly plugged
a dam breach to prevent flooding!â
âYeah, I heard he even plugged a breach in the levee with his bare hands.
Heâs incredibly strongâlike a god in human form!â
âHaha, whether heâs a god or not, Iâm not sure, but I do know his wife is like a
goddess!â

âWhat do you mean?â
âDonât you know? The relief supplies that made it to Riverhaven were only
possible because she personally led the team and took care of the bandits
who tried to steal them.â
âThatâs right! I saw the official report. Without her, a lot more people wouldâve
died in Riverhaven.â
âAh, truly a match made in heavenâa hero and a goddess!*
The rumors that filled Riverhaven were as harsh on Chesterâs ears as they
could get.
After all, he was Ethanâs personal bodyguard, but now all anyone
remembered was Emmanuel. Chester felt like he had become invisible, like a
fool trailing behind Ethan without anyone even noticing his presence.
As night fell, four strange figures gathered at a restaurant in Riverhaven.
âDid you hear? Mackenzie made quite a name for herself during the relief

efforts. Not only did she donate generously, but she also managed to open
up all the transportation channels. The West Endâs business representatives
are surely already on her side,â Azure remarked coldly.
âHmph! That woman is cunning. Does she think she can challenge Mr.
Tannerâs position with such a petty trick?
Amethyst, her eyes framed by purple shadow, gave a wicked glare,
brimming with murderous intent. âMark my wordsâwithin three days, Iâll kit
her!â
