Boom!
Maxwell was wholly stupefied as if he had been struck by a bolt of lightning.

âYou wretched b*tch! You set this whole thing up just to trap me!â he bellowed, pointing at Chiara, who was still lying on the ground.
âI⦠Iââ Chiara hurriedly pushed aside Otto, who was severely wounded and coughing up blood, and scrambled to her feet, trying to explain. But before she could get a word out, Maxwellâs hand swung through the air.
A loud slap echoed through the room.
Chiara clutched her burning cheek, stunned into silence. It was clearâat that moment, guilt weighed heavily on her heart. Otherwise, she wouldnât have just stood there and taken the hit.
âDonât you dare hit my woman!â
Gautier, ever the opportunist, seized the moment. Dragging his injured leg, he casually draped an arm over Chiaraâs shoulder.
Alas, his words and actions were nothing short of throwing gasoline on a raging fire.
âYou son of a b*tch, Iâll kill you both!â Maxwell roared, reaching for his gun. But before he could draw it, Gautier backhanded him so hard that he spun in place before crashing to the ground.
âChiara Bear was right to do what she did. Youâre a pathetic excuse for a manâneither intelligent nor strong.â Gautier sneered. âIf it werenât for the favoritism of your elders in the Zelinsky family, you wouldnât even be worth a dogâs spit. Youâre not even worth Mr. Magnusâ time!â
Maxwell was still struggling to get up when Magnus strolled over and casually placed a foot on his face. Adjusting his glasses, Magnus smirked. âYou never saw this coming, did you, Maxwell? I orchestrated every step of this. Playing dead might fool others, but not me.â
âMagnus, you loser! Kill me if you dareâAhh!â
Before Maxwell could finish his threat, Magnus pressed down harder, grinding his face into the dirt. His features twisted under the pressure, but it wasnât enough to kill him yet.
âMiss Chiara was wise not to choose you. Youâre weak in every way except for that sharp tongue of yours. Even at deathâs door, you still ramble nonsense.â Magnus sneered coldly. âGautier wasnât wrong about you. Youâre a complete failure. You donât even understand the simplest truthâthat women can be a manâs downfall. Father has been helping you all this time, yet you threw everything away for a woman. Iâd love to see the look on his face when your head rolls.â
Chiaraâs expression turned complicated as a bitter realization dawned upon her. Are women truly nothing more than a liability in the eyes of men who seek power?
Then, a chilling thought crept into her mind.
Have I merely been a pawn to Gautier all along? He wonât cherish me anymore after Iâve given myself to him, will he?
âMagâugh⦠youâ¦â

Maxwell struggled like a fish gasping for air, but his face was pinned so tightly beneath Magnusâ boot that his words came out garbled and incoherent.
âCanât speak anymore?â Magnus chuckled, pushing his glasses up again. âDonât worry. I know exactly what you want to say. Youâre unwilling to accept this, arenât you? You think killing you will force Father to kill me as revenge?â
Maxwell suddenly fell silent. The rage in his eyes flickered with fear.
Only now did he realize what kind of person he had been up against.
For years, his father, Chiara, and the elders had kept Magnus in check, suppressing his intelligence and cunning. But now, Maxwell had ignored his fatherâs warnings, let himself be manipulated, and even lost his wife to another man. Without them holding Magnus back, he was no match at all.
âHehe, this is so exhilarating!â Blake spat on the ground and laughed. âThat useless piece of trash has been strutting around with that d*mn dog of his, acting all high and mighty in front of us for years. Iâve been holding this grudge for too d*mn long. Feels so d*mn good to finally get some payback!â
With that, he lashed out and viciously kicked Otto. But lo and behold, despite Ottoâs grievous injuries, he had used the time while the two brothers were talking to regulate his breathing.
In the next moment, Otto suddenly grabbed Blakeâs ankleâthen, summoning all his strength, he launched a desperate palm strike straight at Magnus.
What the hell?!
Magnus hadnât expected this at allâhe was momentarily stunned.
Sometimes, intelligence was useless in the face of brute force. Luckily, in that split second, Blake threw himself in front of Magnus, using his own body as a shield.
With a heavy thump, all three of them crashed to the ground.
âMr. Maxwell, run!â Otto, though clearly at his limit, somehow found the strength to shout. âSurvive! Stay alive no matter what! Youâll eventually outlast Magnus!â
Realizing what was happening, Maxwell ignored the pain wracking his broken body and struggled to his feet.
Gautier moved to finish him off, but Magnus raised a hand. âI want to kill him myself.â
Hearing that, Gautier backed down.
Blake, too, wasted no time, standing up and delivering a vicious punch to Otto, sending him hurtling out of the 19thâfloor window.
âOtto⦠ugh⦠ughâ¦â
Maxwell watched as his loyal follower disappeared through the window. Rage boiled in his chest.
The next moment, knowing there was no escape, he hurled himself toward the window and leaped out.
âD*mn it!â Magnus rushed to the window, but all he saw was an endless expanse of night, the cold wind howling past him.

He knew that Maxwell wouldnât survive such a fall, but the fact that he hadnât delivered the final blow himself left a bitter taste in his mouth.
âHaba! Mr. Magnus, I never thought youâd miscalculate too!â Gautier limped over with a smirk.
Magnus didnât respond.
âDâmn, to think that demn dog was actually pretty loyal, Blake muttered. I always thought he was useless. but I gotta give him credit for that.â
âMr. Verkade, thanks for the help. Iâll be leaving now.â
Magnus knew that two sudden deaths in the area would soon cause a stir. Staying any longer was too dangerous.
âHey, what are friends for?â Gautier grinned, then emphasized, âWeâll always be the best of friends.
Without another word, Magnus and Blake turned to leave. Neither spared Chiara a single glance.
Chiara trembled, feeling like nothing more than a decoration, a pawn, in the presence of these men.
She had always wanted to manipulate men to rise to power, yet now she realized she wasnât even in the same league as them when it came to playing the game.
âChiara Bear, donât worry. Iâll handle everything,â Gautier reassured her as he pulled her into an embrace, even leaning in to steal another kiss.
âMr. Verkade, after whatâs happened tonight, Iâd rather go home.â
Chiaraâs emotions were in turmoil. She didnât want to stay here any longer. Hastily fixing her clothes, she
left the scene.
Gautier watched her retreating figure, the corner of his lips curling slightly.
Outside the hotel, before the police arrived, Blake took the risk of checking the bodies. Once he was certain, he jumped into the car to report to Magnus. âMaxwell is dead, for sure. No disguises, no tricksâthis time, itâs real.â
âLetâs go back then.â
âBack? Back where?â Blake widened his one good eye. âYou went through all this trouble to get rid of Maxwell, and youâre seriously thinking of heading back to the Zelinsky Residence to enjoy the good life? Arenât you afraid that old fox will have you skinned alive?â
âI want to see what heâll do.â
Magnusâ expression was deep and unreadable. He wasnât brimming with confidenceâhe knew that even the fiercest tiger wouldnât eat its own cubs, but⦠some men were more ruthless than beasts.
