Chapter 28
Bogus Billionaire
The sharp ringing of Carolineâs phone pulled her back to reality. When she pushed Kirk away, she was panting. Itâs my phone. It must be Gwen.â Then, she quickly answered the call. âHey, Gwen.â
Phew. You picked up. I was worried to death. How did it go? Did that old ba stard hurt you?â
Caroline did not dare to look at Kirk âNo. I already left.â
Thatâs good. Wait a minute.â Gwen suddenly sensed that something was amiss. âBabe, why are you breathing so heavily? Donât tell me that ba stardâs chasing after you? Iâll come to you right now
âNo, thereâs no need,â said Caroline hastily. âIâm fine, Iâm just relieved that itâs over. Anyway, the
problem is solved. I⦠Iâll talk to you tomorrow.â
Caroline regretted it the moment she hung up the phone. The car was pin-drop silent. The atmosphere was still charged, but it was more awkward than before. She fumbled for words for a
long time before saying, âSo⦠Was that a spot check?â
Kirk turned the air-conditioning higher, but the heat in his body still rose instead of going down.
He nodded in frustration.
Caroline said, âI was ⦠better than the last time, wasnât I?â Once the words left her mouth, she
wished she could find a hole to bury herself in. What was she saying!
Kirk touched his lips. The lingering taste of her stirred something in him. He hid the passion in
his eyes and said, âIâll send you home.â
âOkay.â Caroline could wish for nothing more. They were silent for the remainder of the drive.
After dropping Caroline home, Kirk called Sean. âIâm at a bar,â said Sean. âYour nephew is quite
strange. Heâs been asking about your wife the whole night. Donât tell me your father doesnât
believe youâre married and sent him to test me?â
Kirk tugged at his tie frustratedly. âEddyâs there too?â
âYup, and heâs in a good mood today. Heâs drunk quite a lot and I think weâll be heading home soon.
Iâll let him know you called.â
âNo need.â Kirkâs gaze darkened. âHold him there. Iâm coming over.â
Sean held his phone skeptically, sensing that Kirk seemed to be in a bad mood. Who was grinding his gears? He turned around and walked back into the private room. There were only a few people inside, and he spotted Eddy at first glance. He approached him and said, âYour uncleâs joining us
in a bit.â

Everybody at the party that night was from one of the four most influential families, so it was no secret to them that Kirk had returned. Brie Collins, who had been about to leave, went back to her seat and put down her handbag the moment she heard this. Nobody noticed her actions. Everyone else was gathered around Eddy, teasing him.
âThat means weâll finally get to meet your legendary uncle.â
Eddy hadnât expected Kirk to come either. That night was an early celebration of Carolineâs
failure. He had invited Kirk, but Kirk had said he was busy and couldnât make it. Hearing that he
would come, Eddy immediately felt proud. He couldnât help but say arrogantly, âHumph, you guys
are so lucky to get to meet my uncle.â
Kirkâs success in the business field was admired and envied by all. Everybody looked up to him.
Half an hour later, Kirk arrived, fashionably late.
