Chapter 32
Bogus Billionaire
Caroline frowned. The way Layla apologized seemed rather pretentious.
âKent Pearson?â Sarah cried and looked at Caroline with anxiety written all over her face. âWere
you tainted?â
Caroline glanced sideways at Layla, her lips already turning into a sneer. âSo, youâre the one who
ordered Kent to do that to me last night, arenât you?â
Layla paled at Carolineâs words. She bit her lip and tried to explain herself. âNo, thatâs not true! Iâve already explained this to Eddy. I called Kent out of the kindness of my heart so that heâd lend you the money. I really didnât know that heâd do something like that.â
Caroline took a step forward, not bothering to listen to her excuses. She stared at Layla with
piercing eyes and spat, âSo, it was you?â
âNoâ Layla had barely uttered another word when Caroline gave her a tight slap across the face. It took a moment for Layla to realize what had happened. Her fingers trembled as they touched
her cheek, which was now burning in pain from the slap.
She stared at Caroline in disbelief. This woman had the guts to slap her in front of Eddy! How
could she let this golden opportunity slip by? Almost instantly, tears started streaming down her face. âEddyâ¦â she called out.
Eddyâs heart was filled to the brim with pity for Layla. Now that sheâd started crying, his heart was
already beginning to shatter into pieces. He turned to Caroline angrily, but once he met her steady
gaze, he recalled what sheâd experienced the night before and felt guilty about it.
Keeping his voice cool and patient, he said, âLayla only wanted to help you, but it didnât go
according to plan. Still, you canât blame everything on her. She apologized to you already, anyway.â
Caroline snorted in derision and looked him in the eyes. âYeah, she apologized, but has it ever crossed your mind that Kent almost got his hands on me?â A wave of disappointment flashed
through her eyes.
Eddy lowered his head in silence, no longer able to say anything back.
However, Sarah decided to take things into her own hands by tugging Carolineâs hand and saying, Caroline, thatâs enough. Layla was trying to help you.â
âItâs clear whether she was trying to be helpful,â Caroline said curtly and swept a glance over them three. âI donât care about her apology. Just know that I wonât let things go so easily if thereâs a next time.â Even though her tone was casual, it left a strong impression on the other people around her.
Awkwardness filled the already tense atmosphere.

A moment later, Caroline turned away from them and walked back into her room. Eddyâs eyes followed her as she left. Then, his eyes fell on a pair of menâs shoes on the floor by the entrance. The sight of it gnawed at his heart somehow.
He wasnât the only one who noticed them. Layla saw them and said, âLooks like my brother-in-
lawâs here too.â
Only then did Sarah discover the pair of shoes. The expression on her face shifted in an instant, and she rushed forth to put herself between Eddy and the door. âEddy-â
âMrs. Evans, thereâs no need for an explanation.â Eddy tore his gaze away from the shoes and said, â
Caroline and I will be married in less than half a month. She saved Layla, so I should be grateful to
her. Iâll treat her well regardless of the fact that sheâs been married once before.â
He was rarely so soft-spoken toward Caroline, which made Sarah let go of the breath sheâd subconsciously been holding. âEddy, youâre much too courteous. Itâs all my fault for not educating Caroline well enough. Sheâll be yours to lecture once you two get married.â
Layla had been listening all along, and Sarahâs words made her feel extremely uneasy and
annoyed.
Her initial plan had been to let Kent defile Caroline and render her unfit to marry into the Morrison family. Who knew that he wouldâve been such an idiot to make her plan fail and expose
her?
Just then, Caroline walked out to meet them with a card in hand. âHereâs 50 million dollars,â she
said curtly. Her words were like a bomb to them, and all of them were at a loss for words.
âYou⦠thereâs no way â¦â Eddy frowned in confusion and disbelief. âThereâs no money on this card at all, right?â Just what trick was she trying to play now?
âIf you donât believe me, you can go to the bank with me and check it for yourself.â Last night,
Caroline had gone downstairs to check the status of the card. There were indeed 50 million dollars
in it. She hadnât expected Kent to be this rich.
âCaroline â¦â Layla mumbled with uncertainty at Carolineâs determined expression. âWhere did you
get this much money from? Donât tell me that you became a prost
