Chapter 362
Bogus Billionaire
However, Carolineâs methods were getting less effective. When she inadvertently thought of Kirk, even just a little bit, she would end up longing for him during her short break.
She had never realized before that Kirk had already made a prominent place in her heart. However, it was also because of this that she was terrified.
In the past, Eddy would go on business trips abroad, and she wouldnât see him for months. But she had never been like this. She wouldnât think of Eddy 24/7. In fact, she would be happy every time he said he would be on a business trip..
It wasnât until she started working that she finally understood what that feeling wasâthe feeling of freedom.
However, it had been less than a day since she and Kirk had been apart, and she was already missing him like crazy.
Caroline stood up and leaned against the floorâtoâceiling window. As she watched the busy traffic below, she frowned in distress.
If Marinaâs investigation proved that Kirk really had a wife abroad, she couldnât imagine how she would deal with her relationship with him. Just then, her phone rang on the table.
She turned around and saw that it was a video call from Kirk. She hesitated for a moment. With trembling hands, she was about to hang up.
However, her hands didnât listen to her brainâs commands and turned the video call into a voice call.
By the time she realized what she had done, it was too late. She heard Kirkâs weary voice on the phone. âDarling â¦â
Carolineâs chest tightened at his voice. She really wanted to claw her way through the screen and hug him, but she couldnât.
She bit her lips. Feeling the metallic taste of blood on her tongue, she slowly calmed her bodyâs trembling. She asked, âWhatâs the matter?â
âItâs been a while since Iâve seen you, so let me see your face. Pretty please?â Kirkâs voice was low and deep, with a hint of temptation.
It tugged at Carolineâs heartstrings so hard that they were about to snap. She quickly bit her arm, letting her flesh absorb the sobs that were about to escape her mouth.
After a while, she finally calmed down and said coldly, âThereâs nothing for you to see.â
Kirk chuckled, his laughter ringing through the phone. âThen⦠donât hang up the phone. Let me keep you company, okay?â
Even from a long distance, Caroline could hear the cautiousness in his tone through the receiver.
She tightly gripped the armrest, holding back the questions she wanted to ask. She really didnât believe Kirk was a liar. However, she was afraidâafraid that her love was clouding her judgment.
Caroline silently looked at the flickering screen of her phone. She remembered the day she had been sent to the operating room.
She recalled the powerlessness she had felt when she had laid on that operating table with her hands tied and the pain when the anesthetic had been injectedâ¦
She had always thought that Eddy wouldnât hurt her, even if he didnât like her. However, reality had given her a wakeâup call.
Then, she remembered the question she had asked Kirk that day. She trembled in fear and asked again, âHave you ever lied to me, Kirk?â
After her question, the office fell into silence. Caroline and Kirk both held their breath. Even after more than five minutes, there was still silence.
Caroline had a bright smile on her face, but her eyes were full of tears. âFine. I already know what your answer is.â
âDarling â¦â Kirk called out desperately.
Caroline closed her eyes, letting her tears slide down her cheeks. She said, âWeâll talk about this when you return.â
âI swear this is the only thing I lied to you about⦠I can give you a reasonable explanation.â
Caroline gently interrupted him. âLetâs wait until you return.â
After that, she hung up the phone.
