Chapter 483
Bogus Billionaire
In the villa in the suburbs, Layla stared at Dan and Sarah, who sat before her.
Helplessly, she said, âItâs not that I donât want to help you. You know that my company is bankrupt right now.
âEddy wonât allow me to get involved in anything related to the company anymore. I donât leave the house much now either, so I truly canât help you.â
To be honest, Layla simply didnât want to see Eddy.
She had suffered a loss of a hundred million dollars. Even though people thought he was a good man for helping her settle her problem, she knew he was pissed off for real this time.
Otherwise, he wouldnât have gone without talking to her for such a long time.
Naturally, she was anxious and wanted to see him to ease things between them.
However, Eddy had sternly and explicitly told her not to see him. It would be the same as throwing herself off a cliff if she went to see him now.
Sarahâs expression changed the moment Layla finished her sentence. âBut you told us that you would help us! The trial is going to start soon. How could you break your promise?â
Layla snorted in disdain. Since there was no need to carry on pretending anymore, she retorted, Do you really think that I want to help you? I just didnât want Caroline to have her way!â
âYou-â Sarah yelled.
Layla then sneered. âDan was Evans Groupâs CEO back then. He had full control over our familyâs finances, but times have changed.â
âCaroline managed the company really well, so everyoneâs fawning over her. I can tell you now that you canât climb back to your positions anymore.â
Layla continued, âThis is all your fault. If you hadnât embezzled funds, the Harpers wouldnât have been able to sue you.â
Sarah was so furious that she started trembling. âYou werenât like this before! You said that you would treat us as if we were your parents! How could you treat us like this?â
âI only said that so that I could become the CEO,â Layla admitted.
âWho would want to have parents like you two? I wouldnât want you to become my parents, even if God sent you to me!â
âYou-â Sarah looked ready to pounce on Layla, but Dan held her back.
âThatâs enough!â he roared.
âAll you ever know is to hit others.â
After calming down, he turned to Layla and said, âLayla, you canât judge others purely based on the situation theyâre currently in.â
Layla furrowed her brows, annoyed.
She was about to snap at them and tell them to stop when Dan said, âCaroline may be Evans Groupâs CEO right now, but who said I donât have the means to kick her out of that position?â
For a moment, Layla seemed as if she bought it. Soon, though, she laughed. âDid you really think that I would believe you? If you were able to do that, why would you let her become the CEO in the first place?â
âYou donât believe me, I see.â
Dan sat on the couch and said, âIâm sure you know that Evans Group is a family business. The CEO has to be a person from our family.
âI know that.â
âSo what if the current CEO doesnât share our blood?â Dan spoke clearly and slowly.
Sarahâs expression shifted when she heard what he said. She nudged him to remind him of the gravity of the matter, yet he continued staring right into Laylaâs eyes.
Layla straightened her back, her eyes wide open in disbelief.
A moment later, she shook her head. âThatâs impossible. Youâre lying, right?â
âNo, Iâm not lying to you. Caroline isnât my daughter. I picked her up somewhere outside.â
Layla still couldnât believe her ears. âWhereâs the real Caroline then?â
âSheâs long gone.â A sliver of agony flashed through Danâs eyes.
âIt happened during the kidnapping more than ten years ago Iâm sure you remember it very clearlyâ
Layla trembled as the memories gushed forth in her mind. It was as though the tendrils of fire had suddenly appeared before her eyes. Even Danâs voice sounded distant now âBack then, you and Eddy managed to escape. My daughter, Caroline, stayed there forever.â
Layla opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
Dan continued, âWe were devastated after she died, but as Evans Groupâs CEO back then, I had to support our family business.
âWe needed the Morrisonsâ help. So I silenced all news about Carolineâs death.â
He continued, âI said that she needed to get treatment abroad after suffering from shock due to the incident.
âIn truth, Sarah and I found ourselves a young girl to replace our deceased daughter when we were abroad.â
