Chapter 539
Bogus Billionaire
Kirk strode into SY Groupâs headquarters in Easton.
There wasnât a single person in sight.
After making sure that there was absolutely no one left there besides the two of them, Charles walked out and told him, âSir, Iâve checked all the rooms. All the employees have left.â
âWhereâs the parcel?â
Charles brought Kirk to the reception counter and said, âHere it is. This is the parcel you wanted.â
Kirk stared at the box, his gaze dark and piercing.
âSir,â said Charles with his voice lowered.
âDoes this box really contain a ⦠bomb?â
Instead of answering, Kirk simply stared unblinkingly at the box. No one could ever be certain of how much what Finn said was true. It wouldnât hurt to be extra careful.
âAre they here?â
âTheyâre waiting for your orders at the back door,â Charles whispered.
He didnât have the guts to speak loudly at this crucial moment. Things would go awry if they were discovered.
âLet them come in,â ordered Kirk.
Charles nodded, headed to the back door, and led the men to the reception counter.
âSir,â said all of them in unison upon seeing Kirk.
Kirk nodded at the box. âOpen it up and see whatâs inside.â
âYes, sir,â came the menâs unanimous reply.
After putting on their equipment, they picked up their shields, approached the parcel gingerly, and opened it.
Several minutes later, they took the box out of its outer casing.
Charlesâ eyes turned as big as saucers when he saw it. It was, in fact, a bomb. âHow did this even get to Easton?â
Everyone elseâs faces were equally gloomy. The men, who were actually bomb disposal technicians, then produced their tools to inspect the bomb. After quite some time, they stared at it in confusion.
âWhatâs wrong?â Kirk asked.
âIt doesnât seem like a bomb now.â
âWhat do you mean âseemâ?â Charles was displeased.
âIf itâs a bomb, itâs a bomb. Thereâs nothing in between.â
âIt certainly looks like one, but we didnât detect any explosive substances.â
âItâs fake, then?â Charles glanced at Kirk, and everyone else followed suit.
The head of the bomb disposal team looked troubled as he answered, âWe canât be sure until we take it apart.
âSir?â Charles prompted Kirk as the latter considered the suggestion, scowling.
A moment later, he ordered, âDo it!â
âYes, sir!â The team then started doing their job.
Standing aside, Kirk stared at the tiny black object surrounded by the bomb disposal technicians, his eyes dark like a bottomless pit.
There was something off about this, but he couldnât tell what it was.
In the coffee shop, Caroline would have fallen if she hadnât clutched at Jackâs arm. The two brawny men were advancing on them.
She turned back to look at Liam. âWhat are you trying to do?â
âI donât know. Iâm getting paid for this to free someone from a certain disaster.â
Liam laughed and continued, âCaroline, you should just stop struggling. The more you move, the quicker the drug takes effect.â
Caroline bit her lip so hard that she tasted blood. The pain kept her awake so that she could at least stand upright. She refused to talk to Liam anymore.
âJack, how do you feel?â she asked in barely a whisper.
âI think,â said Jack, glowering at the two brutes that were approaching them.
âI can get rid of them both.â
âIt wonât work. There must be more of them out there,â whispered Caroline as she grabbed his arm.
âIâm their target. Iâll buy time. You see if you can make it out of here.â
