Mend (Care Duet, #2)

"GIVE ME YOUR phone," the man stated authoritatively to Natasha. She already looked as though she were trying to hide the fact she was texting someone—probably her brother.

Avelina grimaced in pain again as she felt another sharp pain shoot up her back. Natasha sighed as she glanced at Avelina. She mouthed something along the lines of, "Hold on tight."

Avelina's brows came together as she watched Natasha begin to hand her phone over to the man. Just as he took his hand off the wheel to grab the phone from her, she instead used her phone to hit him across the head causing the car to swerve. Avelina suddenly understood exactly what Natasha meant by holding on tight.

She grabbed ahold of whatever she could to keep from sliding as Natasha then stood up as best as she could in the truck, and wrapped her arm around the man's neck, putting him in a chokehold.

He stirred the car off into a forest of trees, ready to hit one at any minute. Avelina closed her eyes and waited for the impact to come as she did her best to sit up and hold onto something—anything. She didn't want the day she gave birth to begin like this.

Just as expected, they hit a tree, but luckily it wasn't too bad of a crash. Slowly, Avelina opened her eyes to see Natasha was still holding on tight to the man in a chokehold. Her eyes were shut, and so were the guy's. However, Avelina wasn't sure he was still breathing. The airbags had gone off and the car's engine quickly shut off. Not only that, but the car no longer looked like it could be driven due to the large dent in the front that took the shape of a tree trunk.

Natasha opened her eyes and immediately looked for Avelina, after seeing she was fine, she released the man and grabbed her phone.

"We got to go," Natasha said.

Avelina couldn't look away from the man. He was dead. Natasha had killed him. His neck was red from how tightly she held him. The way Natasha did it with no hesitation was what scared Avelina most.

"Come on!" Natasha yelled.

Avelina had tears falling from her eyes that she hadn't even noticed before. She went to wipe her eyes, but Natasha grabbed her arm and dragged her out of the car.

It was definitely less suffocating being outside rather than in that car where someone was dead.

"Adrik! Please tell me you're on your way!" Natasha shouted into her phone.

Avelina needed Adrik. She needed someone she could trust. She needed to be told that everything would be okay to keep from freaking out.

Natasha glanced at Avelina before returning her gaze to the dirt "She's right here... Yeah, she's okay... She just needs to get to a hospital fast. Oh, I..." she began to walk away from Avelina. Despite how she tried to be quiet so Avelina couldn't hear, she could still hear her every word as she whispered, "I killed him."

"Good... Okay, well we are in the forest somewhere. I'm sure you can track my phone... Yeah, I can send my location... Okay, I'll let Avelina know... Hurry... Bye," Natasha said into the phone, slowly making her way back to where Avelina stood.

Avelina hunched over in pain as much as she could with her stomach. The sharp pain increased with each growing second.

"Let's sit down," Natasha said, going to grab ahold of Avelina's shoulders. She flinched away from the murder's touch, and Natasha didn't fail to notice it. Instead of making a big deal, she continued to help Avelina until she was sitting on the floor with her back pressed against the wrecked vehicle.

"Good news, Adrik wasn't too far out from us. He began heading toward us the moment I told him about the painful faces you were making. He'll be here in five minutes," Natasha explained.

Avelina didn't say anything. All she could do was soothingly rub her baby bump as she awaited for Adrik's red car.

He was driving faster than she had ever witnessed before. When he got out of his car, he hurriedly made his way over to Avelina, squatting down in front of her and taking her face in between in his hands. Before any words could be said, he leaned down and pecked her lips.

"Avelina," he said.

"Adrik," she sighed.

"Are you okay?" he asked, inspecting every single part of her. She quickly noticed that he no longer had his hair in a ponytail. He didn't have any hair to do so. All of his long, beautiful light brown hair was gone. It was cut on the sides with a bit of hair in the middle. He looked older, in a good way.

"Your hair," she said, bringing her hand up to run her hands through it.

"Come on, baby," Adrik stated. He helped her stand and began to lead her to the car. As they walked, Avelina stole a peek of Natasha. She was watching with her arms crossed as her brother didn't bother paying her a single bit of attention. After a few moments of probably waiting for Adrik to greet her, she followed after us.

Adrik opened the backseat so Avelina could lay down without any difficulties. With his help, she got into the car and laid down just as Natasha climbed in the backseat with her.

"I'll watch over her. Just drive safe," Natasha stated quietly.

"Okay," Adrik said, closing the back door and walking to the driver side where he got in. It didn't take long for him to start up the car and speed off down the road.

The entire time, Avelina started to groan m complete agony. The abdominal pain only increased and it began to come in waves every few minutes. It was like period cramps but multiplied by a thousand. There was nothing she wanted more than for the pain to stop.

"Please, hurry," Natasha said.

Avelina had actual tears coming from her eyes. She heard stories about how painful it could be to give birth, but to actually experience it was a completely different thing. Adrik added a bit of speed to his driving as he did his best to rush to the nearest hospital.

Only after about ten minutes, they made it to the emergency room where they parked the car. Natasha immediately ran in to get help.

Adrik got out and went to the back seat to help Avelina sit up.

"You are going to be okay," he tried his best to soothe her as she cried.

"It hurts," she sniffled.

He wrapped his arms around her protectively. There was no other place in the world she loved being, than in his arms. For just a moment, it made everything okay.

"I love you," he told her.

"I love you, too," she sobbed.

"I am sorry," Adrik whispered. Avelina pulled away to look him in his eyes and for the first time, she saw actual tears within them.

"What?" she questioned.

"I am sorry that I hurt you emotionally. I have never stopped feeling it in my chest. It hurt me to hurt you... I am sorry," he said tearfully. "And with Igor. I thought he could be trusted, but I was wrong. It will never happen again."

Avelina couldn't stop herself from kissing him. She let all her love pour out onto his lips before pulling away.

"I forgive you," she whispered. She grabbed his hand and placed it on her stomach so he could feel their baby.

"We're going to have a family," she whispered tearfully. "As long as you promise to always talk to me, and do your best to communicate, and put our family first... I'll always be here and I'll always forgive you and I'll always love you."

"Always," he promised, planting a kiss on her forehead.

"Sorry to interrupt," Natasha said. They didn't even notice her leaning against the car, waiting for them to finish their talk. She looked to be frowning as she pointed at the hospital.

"They are ready for her," she said. A nurse was walking out with a wheelchair. The moment he saw Natasha, he wheeled the chair over to her.

Adrik helped Avelina out of the car and guided her into the chair. Once she was seated, the nurse began to wheel her into the hospital where they walked down a hall that smelled of cleaning supplies. They kept walking until they were at the prenatal unit of the hospital. The nurse took Avelina into a room where another nurse awaited her arrival. They helped her onto the bed and began to ask her a string of questions about when she started contracting and things about the baby like how far along she was.

Once they finished, they checked the baby. Both Natasha and Avelina were by her side the entire time. Through her every contraction, cry, and fear... they aided her with their presence. Adrik would occasionally grab her hand and kiss the top of her head.

"You are 10 centimeters dialated. You're having this baby now!" the nurse announced.
