Chapter 9

πŸŽπŸ– | 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝 heartbreak

Mend (Care Duet, #2)

"It's hard to turn the page when you know someone won't be in the next chapter, but the show must go on."  Ҁ”Thomas Wilder

HE WAS HEARTBREAK dressed as the love of her life. He was only a lesson that taught her not to trust every single person she met. That her dreams should always come first before any man. That there was no significance in waiting for the perfect day, the right moment, or the perfect person because perfection will never come.

She wanted to say that she was getting over Adrik Zolotov, but it'd be a lie. However, Avelina had faith that one day she would look up into the sky again and smile. That the innocence of the world still held more value than the darkness.

She knew that her happiness would come, but it would only find her if she let go of the heartbreak sitting on the bed right in front of her.

"What... what are you doing here? HowҀ”" Avelina paused.

The tears were coming, but the last thing she wanted was for him to see how ruined she was because of him. It was pathetic how he would spend his time with models while she carried around a baby and depression.

Adrik shot her in the chest without using a weapon at all. He laughed in her face even when they never spoke a word. He told her over and over again that he hated her every second of everyday and she could hear it even in the loneliest of hours. Every single minute since Adrik left, all Avelina could do was drown in disappointment and misery over being used and cast away like nothing.

Adrik stood up from the bed, rooting Avelina in her spot. She was pressed against the door with her hand on the door knob in case she needed to quickly run away. Her eyes were locked onto his, and as he stood up, her neck craned up to follow him.

There was an extra thump to her heartbeat when he began to cautiously take a few steps toward her.

"I called your doctor," Adrik said. He took another step.

Avelina could feel a tear trail down her neck, proving her discombobulation. Her mind begged him to stay away, but her heart wanted him closer. She shook her head, trying to rid herself of any emotions that would provoke her into running into the arms of a man that ruined her with no empathy or compassion.

"He said you did not want to know the gender, so I refrained from asking," he continued. Another step.

He was so close. Too close. Avelina could smell the cologne following a familiar path through her nose.

"Twenty-eight weeks," he stated.

Adrik reached out and placed his palm on Avelina's belly. The contact was enough to pull her out of shock as she slapped his hand away.

"Get away from me!" she exclaimed. He took a couple of steps back, but he wasn't giving her as much space as she wanted.

"Avelina, I am taking you home with me. There are bags under your eyes that were not there before. It is a sign of stress and tiredness. Your skin is paler than ever, and your doctor mentioned that you should be eating more. I can take care of you," he said, attempting to reach for her belly again, but Avelina slapped his hand away.

"I'm not going anywhere with you. I don't want anything to do with you anymore. Don't think that just because I'm carrying your baby that it means I'll just go running back to you. You told me that it's over so it's over! Get the hell out, Adrik!" Avelina ordered him.

"AvelinaҀ”"

"Get the hell out! Get out! Get out! Get out!" Avelina sobbed as her eyes began to blur with tears.

When Adrik didn't move, she walked over to her nightstand and grabbed a remote before chucking it at him. When she missed, she settled with the lamp as she yanked the cord from the outlet and threw it. Avelina grabbed everything that was within range and just threw it as hard as she could directly at the man in front of her.

"Get out!" she screamed.

Suddenly, Adrik softly pushed her against the wall where he grabbed her arms, and held them at her sides to keep her from throwing anything else.

"You need to stop," Adrik said. She didn't need to do anything. He was the one who needed to leave her alone and give her space and time to get over him.

Avelina was thrashing around but when his grip didn't loosen, she stopped fighting. Sobs and tears freely danced around her in a song of sadness.

"Then, get off me! Why are you doing this to me? Please, just leave me alone! I won't bother you, okay? Just leave me alone! I can't take this anymore!" she cried.

Adrik turned her over and pulled her close. Her back side was pressed up against him and he bent over a bit so his head was resting in the crook of her neck. He released her hands and let himself wander over to her swollen belly.

The baby had to have known exactly who it's father was. The moment his hands made contact with the lower part of her belly, the baby kicked for its father. Avelina wasn't sure if the butterflies were fluttering around in her stomach from the proximity with Adrik, or if they were there because the baby was moving, trying to reach out to its father.

Avelina pulled herself away from him. Even though it felt like she was ripping off a piece of her heart, she still moved as far away from Adrik as she could.

"Did you feel that?" Adrik smiled, showing off his perfectly white teeth. "I read six books on babies, what to expect from pregnancies, and on pregnant women. What intrigued me was learning that fetuses oftentimes have very fast brainwaves that are stimulated when they kick and move around. I have never witnessed a fetus kicking until now."

Avelina wiped away her tears and settled with a glare even though tears were still falling from her eyes. She no longer felt any need to battle them.

"Well, for the past couple of months, I've been feeling our baby kick and move. I've been throwing up the taste of anything salty, but loving anything that is spicy. I've been crying everyday for the past six months. I've been having swollen feet and extreme back pain. My breasts have been leaking and now I have to wear these stupid nursery bras! But you should already know that, shouldn't you? I'm glad that you finally got to experience what it's like to feel your own baby kick after over six months. Now that we're done with this, leave!" Avelina stated before pointing at the door.

"I am aware of my absence, and I want to fix it. I am taking you home with me," Adrik said.

"No, I'm not going. Miss Paola has been talking good care of me. I don't need you," she said.

"I will be back tomorrow. I expect your things to be packed. We have a lot to discuss," he stated. Avelina narrowed her eyes at him, hoping that he would just leave her be. No matter what he said, there was no way in hell that she would go back to his house willingly.

"I hate you," Avelina mumbled.

Adrik looked as though her words stung him. He almost visibly clinched like she just struck him with a bow and arrow.

"Goodnight, Avelina," Adrik said. His eyes fell down to her pregnant belly again, but he didn't bother to say another word. He fixed his suit by making sure both collars were symmetrical.

"Leave," Avelina demanded.

For once, he listened and walked out of the door.
