Chapter 115 This Complicates Things
Mated To An Enemy
âWhere is Ashleigh?â Axel asked, looking around for his sister.
âShe left early this morning to help Bell with Renee,â Corrine replied.
âReally?â Axel asked. âCouldnât that have waited? I mean Grangerââ
âAxel, he isnât leaving the pack or going to another country,â Corrine sighed. âItâs just the southern territories. Only two hourâs drive, less on paw.â
âStill, shouldnât she be here to say goodbye?â
âYou worry too much. Iâm sure Ashleigh and Granger have already said their goodbyes. And likely will be in constant contact anyway,â Corrine said with a smile to Granger.
Granger returned the smile, though he was viciously tearing her face off inside.
She meant it when she said there would be no contact between Ashleigh and him. He hadnât been able to see her in the past twenty-four hours, much less try to get her back on his side.
âItâs all good, Axel,â Granger said, then looking at Corrine, he added. âAfter all, we will be spending the rest of our lives together. Whatâs a month in the scheme of things?â
Axel thought he noticed a strange atmosphere between his mother and Granger but assumed he had imagined it.
Granger picked up his backpack, double-checking that everything was strapped correctly and that his water bottle was filled.
âAre you really going to hike down?â Axel asked.
âYes, when Dad and I talked last night, he expressed some concern about the outposts between the territories. So we decided it would make sense for me to check them along the way.â
âHow long is that going to take?â.
âAbout a week. I will walk the border fences as I go, just to make sure all is well,â Granger smiled.
âThatâs really great of you, Granger,â Axel smiled.
âItâs nothing. I mean, shouldnât the future Beta take an interest in the packâs security?â Granger grinned.
âYouâre rightâ¦.â Axel said, thinking, âmaybe I should go with you.â
âWhat?â Corrine and Granger asked simultaneously.
Axel looked at them with confusion.
âI just mean, youâre right. You should take an interest, and I, as a future Alpha, should too.â
âThat is true, butââ Corrine began.
âPlus, itâll give us some good brotherly bonding time,â Axel laughed, patting Grangerâs shoulder.
Granger laughed awkwardly.
âOf course, but really you donât need to do that,â Granger stated. âYou must have tons of work to do, and then there are your lessonsâ¦.â
Corrine nodded in agreement, not wanting Axel to get closer to Granger. But then she turned to look at Granger with a question on her mind.
âI know why I donât want him to go, but why donât you?â
âItâs only a week,â Axel laughed. âBesides, Father has wanted me to show initiative. Iâm sure he will see the benefit in this plan.â
Granger could only smile in answer.
âItâs settled. I will join you on the border tour,â Axel gave a broad, joyful smile. âIâm excited! Just give me fifteen minutes to get my stuff together, and we can head out.â
âSounds great,â Granger answered. âI will wait at the tree line.â
Granger gave a final smile and a wave before turning to walk away.
âDamnit!â he cursed in his mind. âThis complicates things.â

âBell?â Ashleigh called out as she entered Reneeâs home.
She gasped when she saw the state of it.
âItâs shocking, right?â Bell said, coming out from the kitchen. âWorse in there.â
âWhat happened here?â Ashleigh asked, stepping over a broken mirror.
âDonât know for sure, but it seems like it was all done by Renee.â
âWhat?â Ashleigh asked, looking around at the destruction. âWhy would she do this?â
âMaybe she was lashing out? Maybe she was in pain? Maybe there was a really annoying and persistent fly that she just had to kill⦠I donât know.â
âWhen did this all happen?â Ashleigh asked, righting a table that had fallen over.
âWell, the last person to see her in a normal frame of mind was your mom the night before the full moon.â
âShe did?â
âYea, she was visiting you and ran into Corrine on her way out, proceeded to tattle on me though,â Bell said, her voice lilted into humor.
Ashleigh recognized the coping mechanism. Bell was hoping to make the heaviness of the situation fade into the background of their conversation.
âOh? And what juicy gossip did she have to share this time?â Ashleigh asked.
âWell, she told Corrine that there was a man in my house,â Bell said with a dramatic southern drawl.
Ashleigh laughed. âWas she right? Did you take Galen home with you? Oooh⦠naughty girl.â
She knew better than to suspect Bell had really done anything she was playfully implying. Bell was a flirt, but generally speaking, she was too closed off to allow for that level of intimacy.
âActually, it was Alpha Caleb.â
Ashleigh had been reaching down to pick up one of the pictures on the floor but found herself frozen in place.
âYep, he came to visit, just him and me behind closed doors,â Bell said, watching Ashleighâs reaction. âIt was a while too. The night just got away from us.â
Ashleigh cleared her throat. Grabbing the discarded picture and placing it on the table.
âHow did Galen feel about that?â Ashleigh asked, trying, but failing, to hide the bitterness in her voice.
âI saw no reason to tell him. Weâre all adults. We all make our choices,â Bell responded casually. âI chose to invite Caleb in that night.â
Ashleigh clenched her jaw as she picked up a small ceramic figurine.
Bell could see the effect her words were having. She smiled to herself and decided to try one last poke.
âHeâs such a strong, masculine type. On the other hand, I was surprised by how gentle he was.â
That was too much.
Ashleigh growled deep and low as she gripped the figurine firmly, crushing it in her hand.
âOh shit!â Bell shouted, running over to check Ashleighâs hand when she saw the drops of blood falling.
Ashleigh pulled her hand away with a growl.
âOh, knock it off!â Bell growled back. âYou know damn well I was just pushing your buttons! Now give me your hand!â
Ashleigh took a deep breath and submitted to Bellâs care. Sitting down on the floor to give her better access.
Once Bell had cleaned the wound, she found it wasnât as bad as it looked. For now, the first aid kit she carried would be enough to take care of it. But she would still insist that Ashleigh get it checked at the hospital when they finished up.
âWhyâd you do that?â Ashleigh asked quietly.
âWhyâd you choose Granger?â Bell countered.
Ashleigh looked away. âHeâs my mate.â
âThatâs the line you keep spitting out. Itâs losing its meaning.â
âDid you really have Caleb in your house?â Ashleigh asked.
âYes,â Bell replied. âHe came to talk about me giving you blood after the wolfsbane.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âWhy?â
âBecause he is a really good guy,â Bell replied firmly, quickly adding. âThereâs also something hinky going on with the information being shared between the packs, but thatâs not the point right now.â
âWait, what?â Ashleigh asked, sitting up.
âI said, thatâs not the point right now!â Bell growled. âWhy did you choose that lying, manipulative weasel over the guy who is so connected to you that his heart literally stopped when yours did?â
Ashleighâs eyes widened as the words crashed against her understanding.
âWhat⦠did you say?â
