Chapter 139 I Am Responsible
Mated To An Enemy
âBellâ¦â Ashleigh called out to her gently.
Bellâs eyes moved down to the paper Ashleigh held. She swallowed, and her eyes fell to the floor.
âYou read itâ¦.â Bell said quietly.
Ashleigh looked down at the letter. She folded it and set it down on the desk. Looking back to Bell.
âYea,â she replied gently.
Bell nodded, squeezing herself tighter.
âSo, this is all my fault then?â she asked, looking at Wyatt. âWhatever deal you struck with that bloodsucker is why you left Cain out in the cold? Why Caleb and the rest of Summer hate us? Why all those wolves without suitable armor or upgrades died?!â
She gasped as she lost control of her cries, and sobbed gently.
âNo!â Wyatt shouted immediately. âNo.â
He shook his head as he stood from his chair. He made his way past Ashleigh and over to Bell. Wyatt stood before her and carefully, gently placed his hands on her shoulders.
She let out another soft cry as he did.
âNone of this your fault,â he said gently. âI made every choice; I am responsible for the lives of my wolves.â
âBut you did those things because of me?â she asked.
âPlease, Bell,â his voice shook with heavy emotion. âPlease, come, sit down. You deserve to know the truth.â.
He looked back at Ashleigh.
âYou both do.â
Ashleigh and Bell sat together on the sofa without saying a word. Ashleigh wanted to offer Bell comfort, but she didnât know how. Wyatt made sure the door was locked so no one could just walk in. He sat across from them in his chair and took a deep breath.
âI told you that to get Bell free of Autumn, I needed Cainâs help,â Wyatt began. âAs I already said, I do not know what the deal he struck with Tomas was, but I know it was something big. Something important.â
âImportant how?â Ashleigh asked.
âI donât know. I only know that Tomasâs satisfied look when they came out of that room was unsettling,â Wyatt answered.
âIf he was happy, it wasnât worth it,â Bell said quietly.
Wyatt lowered his gaze.
Ashleigh saw the tension building, the unease and discomfort between them.
âI donât see how this would be a betrayal of Alpha Cain. It sounds like he chose to help,â Ashleigh said, then turning to Bell, she added. âAnd it was the right choice.â
Bell turned away, facing the empty side of the room.
âI told you that you needed to understand what happened years before he died,â Wyatt said. âSo that you might understand why I made the choices I have made since his death.â
Ashleigh swallowed down her nerves.
âCaleb and the Summer pack blame me for Cainâs death because Cain was missing for two weeks before he was found. The last place anyone had reported seeing him was near the southern border of Winter.
âCaleb asked me personally to investigate. I gave him my word that I would. But after two weeks, I returned to Caleb with nothing, not even a body.â
âWhat? But they had a pyre for Alpha Cain,â Ashleigh said. âI remember it was the start of all the drama between the packs. Alphas Gorn and Tomas were both invited, but you werenât.â
âThe pyre was purely symbolic,â Wyatt said, âI told Caleb I never found Cain. Only signs of his struggle with the rogue wolves. It was one of the reasons he did not believe me.
âBut I would not let him investigate it further. Because it happened in Winter territory, there was nothing he could do about it.â
Wyatt leaned forward in his chair, resting his elbows on his knees. Ashleigh could see the weariness on his face.
âRogue wolves?â Bell asked.
Wyatt lifted his eyes to her.
New tears formed in her eyes, and she let out a bitter laugh.
âHe really likes that excuse, doesnât he?â she said.
Wyatt looked away.
âPlease, dad,â Ashleigh said. âJust tell us what happened.â
Wyatt took a deep breath and nodded.
âAfter Caleb asked for my help, I left for the southern border where Cain was last seen. I tracked him for several days. I found campsites and fresh kills.
âBut then I found something else. Signs of a struggle. Blood trails, bodies.â
âBodies?â Ashleigh asked.
âYes, wolves,â Wyatt said
âOurs?â she asked.
âTheirs,â Bell growled.
Wyatt nodded.
âI found four different wolves, each with dark markings in their fur.â
Ashleigh looked between Wyatt and Bell.
âAre you saying it wasâ¦â Ashleigh was shocked. Even with all the stories she had heard, she couldnât believe it.
âYes,â Wyatt answered. âThey were Autumn wolves.â
âSo, Alpha Cain killed Autumn wolves in Winter?â Ashleigh asked. Trying to piece together what she was hearing.
âNo,â Bell corrected, âAutumn wolves tried to kill Alpha Cain in Winter.â
Ashleigh was confused.
âI donât understand. Why not tell Caleb the truth?â she asked. âIf Autumn wolves killed Alpha Cain, they need to be held accountable!â
âCome on, Ash,â Bell sighed. Her voice was filled with bitter regret. âIsnât it obvious? He didnât tell Caleb because Tomas threatened me.â
Bell turned to Wyatt.
âDidnât he?â she asked.
Wyatt nodded.
âHe did,â he said sadly.
âTomas made it clear that if Cainâs death was investigated beyond the story of the rogue wolf attack, he would make sure that Bellâs mate knew she was alive and exactly where to find her.â
âHow can he threaten you?â Ashleigh asked, looking at Bell, wanting to reassure her and make her feel safe. âYou rejected your mate, right?â
Bell nodded.
âThatâs why he broke my jaw,â she gave a sad smile. âAsh, a rejection has to be accepted by both people. My mate refused, vehemently.â
âThen how did you get away?â
âTomas told us that he would handle the mate. He told him that Bell died while trying to run from Autumn,â Wyatt answered.
âWhat about the bond? Doesnât he feel that youâre still alive?â Ashleigh asked.
âWe sent her to the Priestess,â Wyatt said. âCorrine said they could help.â
âThey told me they âstrainedâ the bond. We were still connected, but if I stayed in Winter, he wouldnât be able to find me.â Bell said. âI lost a week of memories, but I couldnât feel him when I came back out. Which is a huge win in my book.â
âCain created a medicine for her to take,â Wyatt added. âSomething that temporarily suspends the bond.â
âThe block that the alphas take?â Ashleigh asked.
Wyatt nodded.
âMy daily vitamin,â Bell said.
Ashleigh felt overwhelmed with all that she was learning, but her question still hadnât been answered.
âI still donât understand,â Ashleigh said. âIf Tomas threatened Bell, I get why you would hesitate, but if Autumn wolves killed Alpha Cain, Caleb, and the Summer wolves would have helped keep Bell safe, so why not just tell them?â
âAutumn wolves didnât kill Cain,â Wyatt said.
âWhat?â Both Bell and Ashleigh asked.
Wyatt took another deep breath, pushing it through his nose. Then, he lifted his eyes to Ashleigh.
Ashleigh felt a weight in those eyes, a pain that threatened to suffocate her.
âThe hand that ended Cainâs life does not belong to an Autumn wolf, but to one of Winter,â Wyatt said. He turned his eyes down to his hand, gripping it into a fist. âThis hand.â
