Chapter 168 A Big, Fluffy, Huggable Puppy
Mated To An Enemy
Axel went back to bed immediately after his declaration, leaving Ashleigh no option for rebuttal. Corrine tried to calm her down, and Wyatt reminded her that it was Axelâs right as Alpha to put limitations on the wolves of Winter.
Ashleigh struggled to get past her anger and sleep the rest of the night. However, when she finally did, she slept later than intended and could not catch Axel before he left to coordinate with Saul.
All she could do was pout to her new friend.
âIt sucks that your brother pulled rank on you,â Clara said. âBut you wouldnât have been able to join the hunt anyway.â
âWhy not?â Ashleigh asked.
âWeâre headed home this afternoon,â Clara smiled.
âWell, yea, but if I had gone on the hunt, we would have gone home tomorrow,â Ashleigh said. âActually, I might just go anywayâ¦â
Claraâs smile dropped.
âBut you canâtâ¦.â Clara said quickly. âIt was a direct order from your Alpha.â
âI think of it more as a bossy suggestion from my brother,â Ashleigh smiled.
âAnd yet,â came a voice that made Ashleigh close her eyes in regret. âIt was, in fact, a direct order from your Alpha.â
âGood morning, Luna Corrine,â Clara quickly greeted her with respect.
Ashleigh turned around to greet her mother.
âHi, mom.â
âHello, dear.â
âI just think that as the highest-ranking berserkerâ¦.â Ashleigh said, dramatically pointing to herself. âI would be quite useful in this hunt.â
âThatâs true.â
âSee, so then I should go join them.â
âBut,â Clara interjected. âAlpha Caleb expects us to return to Summer by tomorrow morning.â.
Ashleigh furrowed her brows.
âThen I will call him and let him know it might be the next day.â
Clara sighed.
âI think Beta Galen also mentioned needing to get back by the morning,â she tried again.
âIf itâs a big deal for him, he can go ahead, and you and I will return tomorrow.â
Clara gritted her teeth, but Ashleigh didnât notice.
âAshleigh, itâs really not that important for you to participate in every hunt that happens in Winter. You have no reason to keep Clara and Galen from their duties back in Summer,â Corrine smiled.
Clara visibly relaxed, believing that Ashleigh would listen to her mother and Luna.
âFine,â Ashleigh said.
Clara let out a sigh of relief.
âClara, you can go back with Galen too. I will head back alone when I am done here. So it might actually be a few more days,â Ashleigh said as she started to leave the room.
Clara let out a slight panicked sound as she bit her lip nervously.
âOh, for love of the Goddess!â Corrine shouted.
Ashleigh turned around to see her mother visibly irritated.
âCan you not see how hard your friend is trying to tell you something without telling you something?!â
âWhat?â Ashleigh asked, looking at Clara, who was red with embarrassment.
âAlpha Caleb is throwing you a surprise banquet tomorrow night; it is his official introduction of his mate to our pack. He didnât want to tell you ahead of time because he didnât want you to feel pressured, and he wanted to handle all the finer details himself.â
Ashleigh covered her mouth with her hand and took a seat. She turned her eyes to her mother.
âDid you know about this?â she asked.
âOf course, I knew about this!â Corrine huffed. âYou stubborn brat. Caleb very respectfully called and asked that we make sure you didnât do exactly what you have been trying to do.â
âThen, wait, did Axel reallyââ
âAxel gave a real order that you will respect,â Corrine growled. âYou know his feelings about what youâre doing, but he also knew about you needing to go back to Summer today.â
âI had no idea,â Ashleigh laughed.
âThat was kind of the point,â Clara smiled. âAlpha Caleb is going to kill me.â
âNo, Iâm sure heâll understand once I tell him what happened,â Ashleigh said.
âYes,â Corrine added, âif there is anyone that will understand how annoyingly stubborn this brat can be, it is him.â
Corrine shook her head with irritated disapproval at Ashleigh.
âJust like your fatherâ¦â she sighed.
Ashleigh wanted to object but knew she had absolutely no ground to stand on.
The back door opened with a loud thud.
âGuess whoâs engaged!!â Bell shouted as she stepped through the door.
Ashleigh gasped and jumped up from the table with a shout of joy that Corrine quickly echoed. They ran to Bell and enveloped her in an enthusiastic hug.
âCongratulations!â Ashleigh said.
Bell looked at her and took a step back.
âYou bitch!â she shouted and hit her friend playfully. âYou knew he was going to ask me!â
Ashleigh laughed.
âSweetheart, anyone who has ever seen the way he looks at you knew he would ask sooner than later!â Ashleigh said in her defense. âBut yes, I totally knew!â
Bell spied Corrine with suspicious eyes.
âYou knew too?â she asked in disbelief.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Corrine raised her hands innocently.
âI only found out last night. He stopped by to see Wyatt and me before going to the hospital,â Corrine said, taking Bellâs hands. âHe asked us in place of your parents for permission to ask you to join his family.â
Bell smiled and fought back the tears.
âI hope itâs alright that we felt honored enough to accept in their place,â Corrine smiled, though fresh tears fell from her eyes.
Bell hugged Corrine tightly, and Ashleigh joined the hug.
Clara watched with happiness and tears. She didnât know Bell, but she had gotten to know Galen through the past few months. There was no one she could be happier for.
âAm I crazy?â Bell asked quietly. âIs this crazy?â
She pulled back and looked at them.
Ashleigh sighed.
âBell, youâre only questioning it because you know itâs the right thing for you,â she said. âLet yourself enjoy it. Be happy. You found such a wonderful man, and he loves you so much! So accept the happiness, embrace the happiness.â
âYou know, hearing that from you is a little funny,â Bell replied.
âHahaâ¦â Ashleigh said dryly. âWe all know I screwed up in that regard, so I obviously know what I am talking about. So, stop trying to deny yourself.â
âHoney,â Corrine said, turning Bellâs attention to herself. âI have watched you take care of every person around you all these years. You are a wonderful woman, and you deserve happiness, even if you donât believe you do.â
Bell looked away with tears in her eyes.
âHeâs so great,â she said. âI just donât want him to know how broken I really am.â
Corrine and Ashleigh both hugged her once more.
âUhm, Iâm sorry, I know you donât know me⦠but can I say something?â Clara said from a few feet away.
Bell looked past Ashleigh at the other person in the room, only now having noticed her.
âWho is that?â she whispered.
âBell, this is Clara,â Ashleigh replied. âClara, this is Bell.â
Bell gave a slight nod of acknowledgment.
âOh, I know who Bell is,â Clara smiled brightly.
Bell tilted her head suspiciously.
âOh! No, not like in creepy Spring âI know youâ kind of way⦠I work really closely with Galen, soâ¦â Clara added quickly. âNot like âcloseâ we arenât like extra friendly or somethingâ¦. Iâm gay! Like, very gay, I donât like boys. Yuck.â
Clara rubbed her arm nervously.
âClaraâ¦â Ashleigh said.
âSorry⦠I donât talk to many people, and strong people make me very nervous.â
âClara!â Ashleigh called out. âThere was something you wanted to say? That was hopefully helpfulâ¦.â
âRight! Right, the broken thingâ¦.â Clara began. âUhm⦠I just wanted to say⦠that⦠everybody is broken. We all have things that hurt us or make us feel like we arenât worth the time or effort someone is willing to put into us.â
Clara swallowed down the nerves that were trying to push up her breakfast.
âI⦠I donât know why you feel that way,â Clara said to Bell. âBut I know that Galen isnât someone who could ever see that in you.â
Bell took a step forward, listening to what Clara was saying.
âIâm not saying he thinks youâre perfect because that would be so overwhelmingly suffocating!â
Clara laughed, and so did Bell.
âFrom what heâs said, you have stuff that keeps you from seeing who he sees, and he knows that. But it doesnât stop him from seeing it.â
Bell took a deep breath.
âI might not be making much sense here, but if you canât see yourself as the amazing and wonderful person he sees, let him be your mirror. If you think youâre broken and canât fix yourself, let him stitch you up,â Clara smiled. âBecause thatâs who Galen is.â
Bell felt her mouth curving into a smile as the tears streamed down her face.
âThatâs who he has always been,â Clara said. âHeâs the guy that sees you at the rock bottom of your worst day, and he jumps down in that hole with you and gives you a hand up.â
Bell sniffled and closed her eyes.
âYou know what he is?â Clara asked with a big smile.
Bell opened her eyes.
âWhat?â she asked.
âHeâs just a big, fluffy, huggable puppy.â
Bell stared at Clara blankly and then turned to Ashleigh, whose mouth was twitching from the desperate effort she was putting into holding back.
Bell and Ashleigh could no longer hold it in and broke into a heavy fit of laughter.

âCongratulations, Brother. Iâm very happy for you,â Caleb smiled at the call.
âThank you,â Galen said happily. âWe arenât waiting. I will come back at the next full moon, and we will get married. So, I would like to formally request a vacation for the week that follows.â
âFill out the paperwork when you get back in the morning, but request two weeks. Treat your wife better than that,â Caleb laughed.
âWhen you and Ashleigh get married, will you take a whole month?â Galen asked.
âHowâd you know?â Caleb smiled brightly.
