Chapter 186 Deep In His Heart
Mated To An Enemy
The day before the wedding was filled with last-minute changes to menus, flowers, or whatever else could need to be changed.
All of it was handled by Corrine, while Ashleigh and Bell took the day to relax as they awaited the arrival of the Summer wolves that evening.
âSo, do you want to know anything about Fiona?â Ashleigh asked.
âNot really,â Bell said.
âWhy not?â
âBecause Iâm pretty sure anything you tell me about her will only add to the already sky-high anxiety I am feeling about meeting her.â
âWhat if I tell you she is a sweetheart who will absolutely adore you,â Ashleigh asked.
âThen I will call you a big fat liar pants because youâve already told me she hates you.â
âWell, but I said she would love you, not me,â Ashleigh corrected.
âBut if she loves me, she would have to love you because we exist on the same level of awesome.â
âThat is very true,â Ashleigh laughed. âSo, I guess youâre screwed.â
âHey!â Bell threw a pillow at Ashleigh.
âIn all seriousness, I think Fiona will like you,â Ashleigh said, hugging the pillow. âSheâs good people. Just donât hurt her sons.â
âI hope youâre right,â Bell smiled.
Ashleigh smiled and clapped her hands together.
âAlright, so, letâs go over this once more,â she said. âArriving from Summer, we have Luna Fiona, Alpha Caleb, Beta Galen, Clara, and two others whom you did not give me names forâ¦.â
âGalen didnât give me names either!â Bell laughed. âHe just said there would be two more to even out the party. One of them is a friend of Claraâs, and one of them is a friend of Fionaâs.â
âA friend of Claraâs?â Ashleigh asked. âLike a friend⦠or a date?â.
âHe literally did not get any more specific than a friend of Claraâs.â
âI bet itâs Miss Stacey!â Ashleigh shouted with excitement.
âThe teacher?â Bell asked, remembering what Ashleigh had told her about trying to win over the wolves of Summer.
âMmhmm,â Ashleigh replied. âClara kind of did a knight in shining armor and saved her and her students during the attack.â
âI thought you saved them?â Bell asked.
âNo, me and a couple of others helped them out of the fire, but Clara actually shoved Miss Stacey out of the way to keep her from getting hurt and got herself hurt instead. She was all excited about saving the girl, so yea, Iâm guessing itâs Miss Stacey.â
Ashleigh was excited by the idea that Clara had got the girl, but then another realization hit her.
âOh noâ¦â she whispered.
âWhat?â Bell asked. âWhatâs wrong?â
âMiss Stacey is the biggest gossip in all of Summer⦠which means that this wedding has to be perfect.â
âI thought it had to be perfect because you love me and wanted my wedding day to be an amazing memory I will cherish forever,â Bell said with a raised brow.
âNo, why would I want that? Obviously, I want this to be great so that all my efforts in Summer arenât wastedâ¦.â Ashleigh rolled her eyes sarcastically.
âCherished memories.â¦â Ashleigh scoffed dramatically. âGeez, how self-centered you are,â
Bell laughed.
âAlright, well, what is the threat to your precious reputation? Because I gotta say, Corrine has done an amazing job of pulling this thing together.â
âThe wedding is amazing, and yes, it will be the best day ever for you,â Ashleigh replied, getting up from her place on the couch. âI just need to go hogtie my brother and stick him in a closet somewhere.â
âJust make sure to free him when itâs time to walk me down the aisle!â Bell shouted after Ashleighâs retreating form.
***
Axel was genuinely happy for Bell, especially knowing she wouldnât actually be leaving Winter.
But the wedding preparations were making him uncomfortable. So he made his way into the forest to one of the older watchtowers.
This one wasnât used anymore, not after they found a location not far off with a better vantage and easier access for the patrolman. But it remained a place that he could go to be alone. Axel climbed the stairs to the top of the building. He took in a deep breath of cold air and leaned on the railing as he thought about the past weekâs events.
With his memories no longer hidden, it was clear that Alice was his mate and that Holden, the slimy little worm, had given him that treatment.
But why didnât he feel anything? Why didnât they react to each other anymore?
He felt something. He must have. Otherwise, he wouldnât have pushed. He wouldnât have obsessed over the note that read like a lunaticâs ramblings to anyone elseâs eyes.
âShiny and new,â he sighed.
Axel assumed that meant that she was getting treatments regularly, and from what Peter had said, she was likely losing her mind.
âFound her, just to lose herâ¦â he whispered.
âFound who?â Ashleigh asked.
Axel jumped back from the railing.
âAshleigh, what the hellâ¦â he said in surprise. âTrying to kill me?â
âIf I wanted to, we both know I could before you noticed me.â
âThatâs not reassuring,â Axel said, shaking his head. âWhy would you say that? Someone asks, âare you trying to kill meâ? You say âNoâ. You donât say creepy shit.â
Ashleigh raised her eyebrows and laughed.
âMy bad,â she said. âNo, I wasnât trying to kill you, Axel.â
âSee? Not hard, right?â
Ashleigh giggled as she stretched her arms out over the railing.
âWhat are you doing here, big brother?â she asked.
âWhat do you mean?â he replied. âWhy canât I be here? Why does there have to be a reason? Howâd you find me anyway?â
Axel leaned back on the railing.
âSome of the scouts saw you walking towards the woods. They said you looked a little lost,â she answered. âThis is your thinking spot. This is where you usually go if something is bothering you.â
âNothingâs bothering me,â he grunted.
Ashleigh sighed.
âFine,â she said. âI donât have time to drag it out of you. If you want to tell me, you know where I am. I just came to remind you to be on your best behavior tonight and tomorrow with the Summer wolves.â
Axel growled in response.
âKnock it off!â she growled back. âYou donât have to like them, and you donât have to approve of Caleb and me. But this is about Bell, itâs her wedding, and she deserves nothing but the best from all of us.â
Axel huffed but nodded his head in agreement before resting his chin on his crossed arm, leaning on the railing.
Ashleigh turned to leave.
âAsh?â he called out.
âYea?â she replied from the top of the stairs.
âYou and Calebâ¦â he began. âIf, for some reason, you couldnât feel the bond⦠do you think you would still know that he was your mate?â
âWhat a random questionâ¦.â Ashleigh said.
Axel sighed.
âJust forget it.â
âNo, itâs just youâve never been curious about the mate bond before,â she said, moving back towards him. âIs my big brother getting antsy to find his mate?â
âI said forget it, just drop it.â
âNow that youâre Alpha, you want your Luna? Is that what this is?â Ashleigh asked with a smile.
âSeriously, just go away.â
Ashleigh laughed, and then she looked closer. She saw that whatever he was thinking of, was upsetting him.
âWait,â she said hesitantly. âThis⦠this isnât about Bell, is it?â
âAshleigh!â he shouted angrily.
âWhat!? Youâre suddenly asking about the mate bond, and you look like you did after we watched that Old Yeller movie!â she shouted back. âWhat am I supposed to think?â
âI have told you that she has been a sister to me for six years!â Axel growled.
âOk, ok, fine,â Ashleigh said. âMy mistake.â
âDonât you have some jerks to greet,â Axel huffed.
Ashleigh growled and turned to leave again. She stopped when she reached the top of the stairs. Looking back, she saw that he was still hunched over.
She didnât know why he was asking, but she saw no harm in giving him an answer. She sighed.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âEven without our bond, I feel connected to him,â she said. âAnd I love him for who he is. The bond helped us find each other and certainly helps, but itâs still a choice.â
âThatâs a nice thought,â he said. âBut it doesnât really prove anything. The bond is always there. So, itâs easy to say that you would always feel something.â
âI guess thatâs true,â she said. âAnd when our bond was suppressed, I knew what was happening and the fact that Caleb wasââ
âWhat?â Axel interrupted, standing up straight. âWhen your bond was⦠suppressed?â
âYea,â Ashleigh said. âDuring the Alphaâs meeting.â
âYour bond was suppressed during the meeting? How? Why?â
âThe pill the Alphas take, the one that Bell takes.â
Axel turned away.
âWhy didnât I think of that before?â he said to himself. âOf course, Bell takes a suppressant to help keep her safeâ¦.â
Ashleigh looked carefully at him, and then she smiled.
âOh! I get it nowâ¦â she said. âThatâs what this was about. So you were worried that Bellâs mate would somehow know about the wedding? That he would feel it or something?â
Axel looked at her confused, and then suddenly, he nodded.
âYea⦠yea, thatâs what I was thinking of,â he said.
âThatâs really sweet, Axel,â Ashleigh smiled. âBut you donât have to worry. Bell is safe between the bond suppressant and the Priestess stuff.â
âSo, the bond suppressantâ¦â he said. âHe wouldnât have to take it?â
âNo, the bond is one connection between two people. If one of them blocks it, itâs blocked.â
âAnd he wouldnât feel that?â Axel asked.
âWell, I donât know about him⦠but when Caleb took it,â she said. âI felt⦠lonely, kind of empty. Like a part of me was missing.â
âEat this. To remind you of me,â Aliceâs sweet voice called to him again.
Did he feel her missing this whole time? His sweet tooth had developed from sadness and loneliness. Something sweet that always made him feel better for a short time. Was this how he remembered her, deep in his heart?
