Chapter 202 Two Alphas
Mated To An Enemy
âYouâve been home for an hour. So how did you already get me into a meeting I donât know about,â Caleb laughed as Galen led him down the long hallway. âWhat is this about anyway?â
âYouâll know once we get inside,â Galen answered evasively.
Caleb stopped, lifting his brow; he eyed Galen with suspicion.
âGalenâ¦â
âCalebâ¦â
Caleb growled.
Galen sighed in response. He stepped back close to Caleb.
âTrust me,â he said quietly. âThe person you are meeting with didnât want to be seen entering Summer territory, but the reason they are here is important to us all.â
Caleb didnât like entering a room unprepared for what or who he would find inside, but he did trust Galen. He took a deep breath and continued down the hall.
This was one of the wings that was hardly used. Old and outdated, it was one of the original guard towers. It was scheduled to be torn down in the next two years to make way for something new.
Galen opened the door, stepping aside to allow Caleb to enter before following him in and closing the door, locking it.
âWell, I can see why this meeting was so secretive now,â Caleb began when he saw who it was that waited for him.
Axel turned to face Caleb. He wore his hair tied back in three thick braids. His scar was on display for all to see. Caleb had already seen it at Galenâs wedding. Even then, it had surprised but not shocked him.
He didnât know the significance of Axel exposing his scar. Still, the confidence he had gained since doing so was more than evident in how he carried himself. Caleb almost smiled in appreciation for what he saw as a boy growing into a man before his eyes. A feeling he was pretty familiar with.
âTwo alphas meeting privately during a declared Peace could be a suspicious activity,â Caleb said.
âObserving the outer packs without their knowledge could be an aggressive act,â Axel replied pointedly..
Caleb turned to Galen, who suddenly found great interest in the floor under his feet. Then, he turned back to Axel, and he became serious.
âWhy are you here?â Caleb demanded. âIs this a threat?â
âA threat?â Axel asked, taking a step towards Caleb. âI am here about a threat, yes.â
Caleb growled.
âNot to threaten,â Axel scoffed.
Caleb took a deep breath through his nose and crossed his arms.
âJust say what you came to say.â
âI overheard Galen talking about the three missing packs on the phone with you,â Axel said. âI asked him to clarify.â
Caleb looked back at Galen once more. This time Galen found the ceiling of particular interest.
âFunny, he didnât mention that to me.â
âTo be fair, I was on vacationâ¦.â Galen said quietly.
Caleb growled.
âI asked that he keep our conversation to himself until I had a chance to look into it myself,â Axel clarified.
Caleb turned back to Axel, concern in his eyes.
âLook into it yourself?â he asked. âWhat does that mean, exactly?â
âExactly what it sounds like,â Axel stated.
âYou approached the outer packs?â Caleb asked.
âSaul and I visited half of them,â Axel said.
âAre you insane?!â Caleb growled.
Axel growled.
âYou put the treaty at risk!â Caleb shouted angrily. âI know you are new at this, but even you canât be that stupid!â
Axel took another step forward, snarling.
Galen growled in response.
Axel turned his eyes on Galen. But Galen held his ground. Growling back at the new alpha, though, it was becoming difficult. Finally, Axel narrowed his eyes and took a step toward Galen.
It was Caleb that saw the way that Galenâs knees shook. He looked back at Axel with alarm.
âHe is actually bending Galenâs will⦠How?â Caleb wondered.
Caleb stepped between them, snarling back at Axel. Cutting the flow of power between the two men.
Axel clenched his jaw and took a step back.
âDo you know any of them?â Axel asked.
âWhat?â Caleb asked.
âThe smaller packs, do you know them? Have you met them?â
âWe provide all packs withââ
âI didnât ask about what you provide them,â Axel growled softly. âI asked if you have met any of them. Walked among them, gotten to know the people, the alphas?â
âNo, I havenât,â Caleb sighed.
âI have,â Axel replied. The look in his eye told Caleb how serious this conversation was for him.
âI went to check on those packs because they are people I know. That I have worked with, talked with,â Axel continued. âIncluding the three Galenâs men identified, Saul and I found four more. Seven packs, gone. Seemingly without a trace.â
Caleb straightened his back.
âHow is that possible?â Caleb asked. âThe three that we found already seemed too many to be a coincidenceâ¦. But seven?â
âItâs not a coincidence,â Axel said.
âHow do you know?â Caleb asked.
Axel turned back to where he had stood when Caleb first entered the room. He reached for the bag on the ground.
âThe attack just before the wedding,â Axel said as he looked inside the bag. âDid you see Granger?â
âNo,â Caleb replied. âI never saw him. However, Ashleigh said she felt his presence.â
Axel nodded.
âRight, because theyâre mates too,â he said.
Caleb clenched his jaw tightly.
âI think you know, thatâs not exactly true,â Caleb said in a low growl.
âItâs not exactly untrue either,â Axel replied.
âWhat is the reason youâre here, exactly,â Caleb demanded.
Axel turned, holding an arrow in his hand. He offered it to Caleb.
âDo you recognize this?â he asked.
Caleb turned the arrow in his hand. He recognized that it was handmade but saw nothing familiar about it.
âShould I?â Caleb asked, handing it back to Axel.
âWhat about this?â Axel asked, handing him something else.
Caleb took the item. It was a piece of torn leather. He turned it over and found something familiar to him. It was an etching. It looked like a mountain peak with a crescent moon above it.
âThis came from the rogues that attacked Summer,â Caleb said. âHow did you end up with it?â
âThat image that branding comes from the Whiteridge Pack,â Axel said. âThey are skilled leatherworkers, and they take pride in their work. So, they mark it.â
Caleb furrowed his brows and looked at the image again. It was definitely the same.
âThe wolves that came to Summer that night werenât rogues. That was the Whiteridge Pack, led by Granger.â
âHow can you know that?â Caleb demanded.
âThe reports from the border said that the rogues that escaped were led by a red-headed man,â Galen interjected.
âKirnon, the Alpha of Whiteridge, had red hair.â
âThat doesnât meanââ
âDid you know that Granger handmakes most of his arrows?â Axel interrupted. âYou can tell theyâre his by two things. The first is this little carving in the arrowhead, a letter G.â
Axel lifted the arrow, showing Caleb the arrowhead, where he could, in fact, see a carved âG.â It was only then that Caleb noticed that it was stained with a faintly red hue.
âThe second thing is right back here,â Axel flipped the arrow to show the feathers. He pointed to a light blue spot on two different feathers. âHe said they were his eyes, making sure his prey was really dead.â
âWhere did you get this?â Caleb asked.
âI pulled this from between Kirnonâs ribs after I found him and about forty other members of Whiteridge in a shallow grave.â
After Galenâs call, Caleb had suspicions. He had hoped they were wrong.
âGalen said that there were over two hundred in that attack, and there were no reports of children.â
Caleb nodded.
âWhiteridge didnât number two hundred, even with their children,â Axel said. âIt stands to reason that it wasnât just Whiteridge, but at least one more of the missing packs involved. And the children have to be somewhere.â
Caleb felt the bile in his stomach rising. The anger inside of him had been growing with each word out of Axelâs mouth.
âYouâre saying⦠that Granger somehow convinced these packs to turn on Summer, and then he killed those that survived? And he might still have their children somewhere?â Caleb snarled.
âNo,â Axel said firmly. âI donât think Granger is that smart or that capable. So Iâm saying he found someone that is.â
