Chapter 210 Nothing to Prove
Mated To An Enemy
âIs that why you donât like me, Axel?â Caleb asked, crossing his arms over his chest. âBecause you think I lie?â
âI donât think you lie. I know you lie,â Axel replied. âSo does my dad, and so do the other Alphas.â
âYouâre an Alpha now, too,â Caleb chuckled.
âWasnât my choice,â Axel said.
âWasnât mine either,â Caleb replied coldly.
They locked eyes. Axel felt the hostility coming off Caleb.
âThat anger you feel right now towards my family. Are you surprised I donât think you and Ashleigh should be together?â
âYou donât know me, Axel.â
âNo, I donât, and I donât need to,â he replied.
âI love Ashleigh, and she loves me. That is a fact. Whatever else there is between our families. That fact wonât change,â Caleb stated firmly.
Axel took a deep breath and moved back to the table where Caleb sat. He set his bag down in the chair and looked at Caleb.
âYou lie to each other,â Axel said.
Caleb shook his head.
âNo, we donât.â
âYou do. You keep things from each other, by choice,â Axel said. âThatâs lying.â
âYou donât know anything about us,â Caleb growled.
âI know she doesnât trust you,â Axel said.
Caleb growled..
âItâs not your fault,â he continued. âShe doesnât really trust anyone.â
âWe trust each other,â Caleb said. His tone was low and dangerous.
âIf that were true, you would already know why things wonât work between you.â
Caleb growled.
âI love my sister, Caleb,â Axel growled back. âSheâs been hurt enough in her life. I know she wants to be with you. I know you love each other. But itâs not enough. Not for her.â
âYou donât know what youâre talkiââ
âWhy arenât you married already?â Axel asked.
âWhat?â
âYouâre mates. You love each other. Why wait?â
Caleb considered telling him to mind his own business once more, but that wouldnât get them anywhere.
âShe wants to prove herself to my pack. I agreed to wait five months.â
âWhat happens if she doesnât prove herself by then?â
âWe get married, and she earns their favor in time.â
Axel laughed.
Caleb growled.
âYou donât know her,â Axel said. âShe wonât do it, not if she doesnât believe she has earned her place. Even if she really wants to.â
âShe already promised.â
âShe promised Granger sheâd marry him too.â
Caleb stood up with a snarl.
âIâm not attacking you, Caleb. Iâm telling you the truth,â Axel growled firmly at him. âShe didnât marry Granger because you came along, and she began to question everything.
âYea, it was good, and Iâm glad she didnât marry that bastard. But youâre not the reason she didnât marry him.â
Caleb clenched his jaw but said nothing.
âAshleigh has always put the good of the pack before herself.â
âIâm well aware of that,â Caleb said.
âSo, Alpha Caleb, is it good for the pack if their Alpha marries a Luna they donât accept?â
âWouldnât it have been better for Winter if she had married Granger right after her birthday as she planned?â Caleb growled. âYou said that Iâm not the reason she didnât marry him. If not because of her feelings for me, then why?â
Axel nodded.
âYea, it would have. But like I said, you changed things for her. Changed how she felt about herself.â
Caleb stared at Axel, his anger replaced by confusion.
âWhat do you mean?â
âShe doesnât trust herself anymore,â Axel said. âBefore you showed up, she knew her place in the world. Who she was, who she wanted to be⦠But when she met you, it all imploded.â
âDo you really think her life was better before me?â Caleb scoffed. âWith Granger?â
âNo, I already told you Iâm glad they didnât get married.â
âThen what?â
âAshleigh didnât use to lie. She was always straight with people. Tell you the truth whether you want to hear it or not,â Axel said softly. âExcept for one person. My dad. She lied to him all the time, trying to prove herself.â
Caleb swallowed.
âShe knew who she was, except with him,â Axel said. âNow, she lies, usually because she thinks sheâs protecting people. But every time she does, she trusts herself a little less.â
âAnd thatâs my fault?â Caleb asked.
âNo, not really,â Axel replied.
âThen what?â
âItâs not your fault Caleb but let me ask you something. Is she trying to prove herself to your pack or you?â
âShe has nothing to prove to me,â Caleb said.
âDoes she know that?â Axel asked. âBecause from what Iâve witnessed, everything she does, is for you.â
Caleb swallowed down the awful feeling rising from his stomach.
âHow do Iââ
Axel put his hand up to stop him.
âIâm not here to fix your relationship,â Axel said, grabbing his bag and heading for his room. âAs far as I am concerned, if you canât figure this out on your own, you donât deserve her.â
***
âHello?â Axel answered his phone.
âAxel, itâs Jonas, Broken Crag,â Came a thick southern accent over the line.
âAlpha Jonas, this is a surprise.â
Axel tried to hold back his irritation. Jonas was not someone he particularly cared for.
âShouldnât be,â Jonas said. âYou come walkin into my territory, should be you reachin out to me, not the other way around.â
âAll due respect Jonas, Iâm not in your territory.â
âDonât pull that technicality bullshit with me, pup. I know youâre here. My scouts seen you and Caleb.â
âItâs not a technicality, Jonas. Itâs a true fact.â Axel sighed, rubbing his temple with his thumb. âYes, Caleb and I are near your territory, but our current location is on neutral ground. If we were planning to enter your territory, we would, of course, send you notice first.â
âWell, then I saved you a step.â
âWe werenât planning toââ
âChange of plans then,â Jonas growled. âYâall are expected in my home this evening.â
âJonas, I appreciate the offer, as I am sure Caleb will as well, butââ
âAinât no âbut,â Axel. I expect you here tonight.â
Axel took a deep breath.
âAfter all the shady shit you âblessedâ bitches keep pulling, I am gettin some answers,â Jonas said sternly.
âWhat are you talking about, Jonas?â Axel asked, suddenly interested. âWhat happened?â
âNah, Axel, you will answer my questions, not the other way around,â Jonas stated. âI will see you both at supper.â
***
Caleb had gone to his room after their conversation had ended so abruptly. He expected he and Axel would not speak or see each other again until the morning at the earliest.
Which was why the knock at his door surprised him. It had only been an hour since their conversation.
âI just got an unexpected call,â Axel said as Caleb pulled open the door.
âYour scout?â
âNo,â Axel smiled. âAlpha Jonas, of Broken Crag.â
Caleb sighed.
âLet me guess, he was an asshole?â
âNaturally, though, I was slightly relieved to hear from him this time.â
âIt is good to know that at least one pack is alright,â Caleb said, eyeing Axel, âI assume?â
Axel nodded.
âHe called to tell me that he knew we were in the area, his scouts spotted us, and he wants us to come for dinner. Where he expects us to answer his questions about, and I quote, âall the shady shit you âblessedâ bitches keep pullingâ.â
Caleb furrowed his brows.
âJonas calls Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter the âblessed bitchesâ because of the Goddess,â Axel clarified.
âI know,â Caleb replied with annoyance.
âSorry, seemed like you didnât interact with the lesser packs much, so I wasnât sure you knew much about him.â
âBroken Crag has always been a pack that needed to be watched. They have skilled warriors and good leadership. Granted, their chosen Alpha is an asshole, but he does lead his wolves well.â
Axel nodded in agreement.
âDo you know the âshady shitâ he refers to?â
âNo idea,â Axel replied. âBut my guess is it might have to do with whatever Autumn has been doing to get wolves to abandon their packs and join.â
âAgreed,â Caleb said.
âGuess weâre going to dinner,â Axel sighed.
