Chapter 249 She Won't Let Me Die
Mated To An Enemy
He lay on the bed, staring up at the stone ceiling.
âHow do you like your room?â Axel asked from the door of the cell.
âItâs quite nice,â Granger replied, turning his head with a smile. âThank you.â
Axel smiled back with cold eyes.
âThere seems to be a lot of bustling around today. Something big must be happening,â Granger said, sitting up and tilting his head as he spoke. âIs it a party?â
âYes,â Axel nodded. âA celebration.â
âOh? For anyone I know?â
âItâs yours,â Axel said. âTonight is the full moon. We are preparing for your going away party.â
Granger clenched his jaw but kept his gaze focused on Axel.
âHow sweet,â he said through gritted teeth. âAnd here I thought you didnât care anymore.â
âI care, Granger,â Axel said, a coldness seeping into his tone. âI care quite a lot about what happens to you.â
âIâm touched,â Granger smiled.
Axel opened the door to the cell, stepping inside.
âYou seem different now,â Granger said..
Axel closed the door.
âAll puffed up and proud. Just because youâre Alpha. Well, junior alpha,â Granger chuckled. âDaddy still does most of the heavy lifting, right?â
Axel turned to face Granger.
âWhy donât you cover it anymore?â Granger asked, moving his hands over his face to indicate Axelâs scar. âItâs really distracting, very gross. I can barely look at you, honestly.â
âAre you having fun?â Axel asked.
âKind of, yea,â Granger smiled.
âGood,â Axel replied, âI am glad that in these last moments of your life, you continue to prove how worthy you are of whatâs to come.â
Grangerâs smile fell as he clenched his jaw.
âYou never thought I was good enough,â he growled.
Axel leaned down and met Grangerâs eyes.
âYou never were.â
Granger snarled and lunged for Axel when suddenly he felt a pressure against him, as though he were trying to move through a thick sludge pushing against his body.
He looked up at Axel, a slight glow around the eyes. His presence was pressing down on Granger, forcing him to his knees.
Grangerâs insecurity and rage burned even hotter, and he fought back against Axel. But unlike the previous times with Wyatt, he couldnât fight back. Even the look on Axelâs face had such a level of
calm that it only increased the panic Granger was starting to feel.
âYou never deserved Ashleigh or our lost sister,â Axel said. âBut there was a time that I thought you did.â
Granger clenched his jaw, unable to do anything else but kneel before Axel and listen.
âI considered you my brother,â he continued. âI trusted you. With my family, my sister, and our people. I was going to make you my Beta. The leader of the South.â
Axel lowered himself to sit eye to eye with Granger.
âAnd then you tried to kill me, you let monsters attack Winter, you killed Reneeâ¦.â Axel took a deep breath. âI never knew you, did I?â
The pressure Granger was feeling lessened until it was gone entirely. He lifted his head to Axel, whose eyes had returned to normal.
âHeh,â Granger laughed to himself. âJunior alpha, barely able to hold his power.â
âThe only one that ever mattered was her,â Granger spat. âThe only person on this worthless planet I have ever cared about is Ashleigh!â
âWhere did the monsters come from, Granger?â Axel asked.
Granger smiled.
Axel repeated his question.
âWhy should I tell you?â Granger asked. âWill you let me go if I do?â
âNo,â Axel replied immediately. âHonestly, I donât care if you tell me. Iâll find out without you. But now, at least I can tell your father I gave you one last chance to be worthy of his concern.â
Granger scoffed and then smiled.
âHave Ashleigh come and ask. Iâll tell her,â he said.
Axel chuckled.
âYou donât exist to her anymore, Granger,â Axel said. âSheâs not coming here. You wonât ever see her again.â
âI am part of her,â Granger growled. âI am her mate.â
âNo,â Axel countered. âCaleb is.â
Granger snarled angrily.
âYou canât possibly understand what we have,â Granger said. âShe feels me. She needs me just as much as I need her. But, youâll see, she couldnât kill me in the cave and wonât let me die today.â
Granger smiled to himself.
âI do understand, Granger,â Axel said quietly. âThe need, the desire, the longing. I understand it well.â
Granger looked at Axel carefully.
âI have a secret, Grangerâ¦I have met my mate,â Axel smiled, tilting his head to the side. âAnd so have you.â
Granger swallowed, sensing the danger in Axelâs words.
âI found her again after you saw her lastâ¦.â
Axelâs eyes swirled with darkness while the glow around them grew brighter. Granger tried to move back but found himself blocked by the bed.
âYou remember her, right?â Axel asked. âMy mate, Alice?â
Granger gasped as the oxygen was sucked out of his lungs. His eyes widened, and a deep panic spread over him like wildfire. He tried desperately to take in a breath, but he couldnât. His eyes darted back and forth, and his body was utterly useless.
Axel stared at Granger, his eyes glowing brightly.
âYou shattered her mind, Granger,â Axel said. âLeft her writhing on the ground drowning in her own madness.â
The pressure was building in Grangerâs chest, and the need for oxygen was getting more and more intense by the second.
âYou had no idea that she would find me, that being together would help her mind settle. To quiet enough for her to survive what you did,â Axel continued. Then, his demeanor changed, and his tone grew sad. âShe was fine, healing. She would have regained everything if we stayed together. She would have returned with me, and we would be happy.â
Grangerâs entire body burned, ached, and begged for oxygen.
âBut you had taken Ashleigh and all those children,â Axel growled. âSo, my Alice exchanged herself to the devil to find you. I donât know what will happen to her or if Iâll ever see her again.â
The hold on Granger was dropped, and he fell forward to his elbows, gasping and coughing frantically for air.
âI have somewhere more important I need to be,â Axel said as he stood up. âI will see you in just a few short hours.â
Axel turned to leave the room but then turned back once more.
âI just wanted you to know, Granger. That I will enjoy every moment you suffer,â Axel stated. âAnd I will not let you die before you feel every single ounce of agony you have put others through.â
Axel turned and left the cell.
Granger remained on the ground, taking in shallow breaths as his body recovered from the shock of Axelâs power.
He held himself and whispered the same words again and again.
âShe feels me, she needs me, she wonât let me die.â

The morning had brought Galen and Caleb to Winter. They were quickly escorted to Fiona and informed of the schedule for the day and night.
The afternoon was filled with the final preparations.
It had been many years since the arena had been used. Even longer since it had been used for this purpose.
Corrine had seen to the cleanup and the assembling of the gallows herself. Ensuring there would be no mistakes, no complications, no interruptions.
When the moon finally rose in the sky, every eye in Winter turned to greet her. For one purpose or another.
