Chapter 265 Trouble in the House
Mated To An Enemy
âHow did this happen?â Fiona asked.
âHow much of our data has been stolen?â Galen asked.
âI donât know,â Clara said.
Nessa continued to type away at her computer, alternating between her laptop and the PCâs keyboard beside her.
It had been an hour since they had found the files disappearing from before their eyes. Once it was clear that it wasnât a glitch but an active attack, Clara reached out to Galen and Fiona.
âItâs a worm,â Nessa said. âItâs burrowed deep in the system.â
âCan you remove it?â Galen asked.
âWorking on it,â Nessa replied.
âSheâs got this,â Clara nodded.
âWhat about the files that are already gone?â Fiona asked. âWere those the only copies? Do we have backups?â
Clara hesitated to respond.
âClara?â Galen called to her.
âNo,â Clara shook her head. âI found the files on Alpha Cainâs computer. I made copies on a flash drive. But unfortunately, the worm seems to have wiped the files on his computer. And my flash drive was connected to Nessaâs laptop. So thatâs where we saw it disappear from.â
âCould this have originated from the laptop?â Fiona asked..
âNo,â Nessa replied, still focusing on delivering line after line of code to combat the worm that continued to destroy data. âMy laptop has multiple layers of protection and security scans throughout the day.â
âThat doesnât mean you couldnât have missed something,â Fiona countered. âThis thing just started when you connected your laptop. It stands to reason thatââ
âAll due respect, Luna Fiona, but no. My system is a fortress,â Nessa stated.
âThen how were the files on the flash drive removed from your fortress?â
âBecause I let down my drawbridge to allow the sick and the weak inside. But they spread the plague,â Nessa said, her eyes darting around the screen as she typed even faster.
Fiona furrowed her brows.
âWhat the hell did she just say?â Fiona growled to Galen.
âShe said that when she connected to Alpha Cainâs PC to try and remove his firewall, she lowered the defenses of her laptop. Meaning that the worm entered her system through the connection to the PC,â Clara replied.
âBut why did it suddenly happen?â Fiona demanded.
âThe files on the PC went missing first,â Nessa replied. âMy security likely sent the worm on a speed run. It had probably been moving slowly in the background programs munching away at little bits and bytes for a long time. But to complete its mission before my defenses could kill it, it went to hyper speed and started gobbling away at all the data it was searching for.â
âWhat exactly is it searching for?â Galen asked.
âI donât have time to figure that out right now,â Nessa said. âI am gonna kill this thing before he finds a way into your main system.â
âIâm confused. I thought it was already in our systems?â Fiona asked.
âWe donât actually know,â Clara replied. âAll the files that have been removed or accessed are specifically on Cainâs desktop or the flash drive. So it looks like itâs searching for files related to Alpha Cain.â
âWe donât know that for sure,â Nessa said.
âWhy donât we know that for sure?â Galen asked.
âBecause we donât know where it has been. This worm didnât just appear from out of nowhere. We donât know how long itâs been here or if itâs accessed anything else,â Clara said. âHonestly, for all we know, itâs already gotten into the other systems.â
âHeâs not a replicator, this is a hungry worm gobbling up data, but he isnât dropping little babies to munch it up faster,â Nessa said. âHeâs smart and has a goal.â
Galen pulled out his phone and stepped aside to order a complete lockdown of their computer systems.
âGotcha!â Nessa shouted. She bit her lower lip and squinted her eyes as she typed the last few lines of code. âAnd nowâ¦. Youâre mine!â
She smiled to herself and leaned back in her chair as the worm was entirely blocked from both systems.
âDid you stop it?â Galen asked. Leaning forward to look at her screen.
âThe worm is trapped,â Nessa said. âIâm grabbing a little piece of his code before I smoosh him. But Iâve locked it down, so it wonât go anywhere.â
âWhy would you save a piece of it?â Fiona asked.
âTo run a digital autopsy,â Nessa replied. âIf I can pull it apart and analyze the code, I can give you a better answer on the how and why of his creation and purpose.â
âIt makes sense, but are you sure you can keep it from infecting the system again?â
Nessa reached into the bag at her feet and pulled out a brand new USB.
âHereâs his travel kennel. I will put him inside and move him to a new home on my air-gapped computer. No risk of him digging his way out.â
Galen looked at the laptop attached to the PC.
âThis is not an air-gapped system,â he commented.
âNo, but I have one in my room,â Nessa smiled. âI have two, actually.â
âAlright, as long as you keep it out of our systems, I guess there is no issue with that plan,â Galen said. âWhat about the damage already done?â
âAfter a system reboot, Iâll see what I can do about file restoration, but itâs unlikely weâll be able to recover anything,â Nessa said. âIâll hook up with your system analysts, and we can work up a plan to check every nook and cranny, but itâs going to take most of the day to check for any baby worms.â
***
Once Nessa had given them her plan, Fiona decided to temporarily hold off any further exploration of Alpha Cainâs computer. Of course, Clara was welcome to continue searching the paper documents. But the risk of losing what little of his data they had left was one she was unwilling to take lightly.
Nessa joined the systemâs analysts in cleaning up the entire Summer Network. At the same time, Clara remained and sorted through her stacks of files.
Galen and Fiona returned to Calebâs office to continue reviewing the reports they had received from Jonas and his pack.
âThere are six packs, including Eclipsed and with this last report, Blue Reef, all confirmed dead,â Galen sighed. âAccording to Jonas, there were signs of struggle in Blue Reef, not as bad as Eclipsed, but the pack is gone.â
âThe missing numbers arenât any better,â Fiona said, throwing down her notebook on the table. âDark Maw, Stone Garden, Riptide, Grimhide, and at least five others!â
âWell, we know Frostbite is in talks with Winter. Axel says they are close to securing a truce.â
âBustling Bush and Sky Valley have both run from their homes. They claim monsters and rogues have invaded their lands,â Fiona said. âJonas sent men to investigate, but it seems he found no trace of either.â
âThe Sky Valley wolves will arrive tomorrow; Bustling Bush will go to Broken Crag,â Galen said. âBurning Ember and Moonguard have refused any meeting with us, but at least we know they are alive?â
Galen sighed and sat back on the couch.
âActually, we got word from Burning Ember this morning. They are willing to meet with Caleb only,â Fiona said.
âProgress, I guess.â
A knock at the door drew Galenâs attention. He answered and received a brand-new report.
âLooks like Grey Paw and Misty River are confirmed alive and well. Jonas says they have been made aware of what is happening but at this point wish to stay out of it.â
âOf course, they do,â Fiona rolled her eyes. âAnd theyâre surprised that we call them lesser.â
âCan you blame them for not wanting to join a war if they can help it?â Galen asked.
âNo, but for now, I can use them as something to focus my irritation on,â Fiona sighed. âSoon enough, no one will have a choice.â
Galen nodded and looked back to the report.
âJonas says that Autumn has been quiet. They have even stopped sending scouts beyond their own territories.â
âWhy?â Fiona asked, sitting forward.
âHe doesnât know.â
âWell, that canât be good,â Fiona sighed. âWhat has Spring been up to lately?â
Galen searched through the stack of reports. Finally, he found the one he was looking for.
âNothing notable.â
Fiona thought for a moment before saying anything.
âWhat do you think?â Galen asked.
âThey should have reacted to Caleb and Ashleigh getting married,â she said. âThere is no way they donât already know about it. The fact that they havenât reacted at all⦠thatâs concerning.â
âIn what way?â Galen asked.
âSpring is filled with kiss asses and information gatherers. The wedding of an Alpha is big news. They should have sent flowers, gifts, at minimum messages before you and I ever got back to Summer.â
âMaybe they know he isnât here and are waiting for his return?â Galen offered.
âMaybe, weâll see when he gets back, I guess,â she continued. âThe real problem is Autumn.â
âWhy?â
âAutumn is closing ranks. Either that means they are strengthening their defenses, or there is trouble in the house,â she said. âThe last thing we need is a sudden change in leadership within Autumn.â
