Chapter 283 It Kills Me
Mated To An Enemy
Axel held Bell tightly as she let it all out.
He reassured her and patted her back, whispering that she had an entire pack that would keep her safe from anyone who would dare to threaten her.
It was almost an hour that she cried. She was exhausted by the time she had finally calmed down.
âAre you ok?â Axel asked softly as he pulled away from her.
âYes,â Bell said, laying back down in the bed, hugging her pillow to her chest. âI just had a lot of pent-up feelings.â
âIâm sorry,â Axel sighed. âI shouldnât have said anythingâ¦.â
âItâs alright,â Bell said. âI needed to know.â
âI should let you rest,â he said, seeing how tired she was.
âWait,â Bell called before he stood from the bed.
âYea?â
Bell swallowed and took a breath.
âHe is Tomasâ son,â she said.
âWhat?!â Axel shouted in surprise.
âSsshh!â
âSorry, that was just not what I expected.â.
âYea⦠He always had problems with violence, Tomas kind of kept his existence low key,â she said. âAs far as I knew, he sent him away overseas after I âdiedâ.â
âI wonder if he brought him back for the war,â Axel theorized.
Bell shook her head.
âNo,â she said quietly. âTomas would never do that. I think heâs almost as scared of Roman as I am.â
âWouldnât it make sense to try to use that against his enemies?â Axel asked.
Bell shook her head again.
âNo,â she said. âI never told Wyatt this, but the night he took me from Autumn, the night that Roman broke my jaw, Tomas had tried to protect me.â
âWhat do you mean?â Axel asked.
âRoman attacked me like that because I tried to reject him, and he disagreed. But before that, Tomas had tried to keep me safe. He literally took me to a safe house.â
âWhat happened?â
âI made a mistake,â Bell said sadly. âTomas told me that I would leave Autumn soon, that I just needed to wait one more day. But I wanted to say goodbye to my parents.â
Tears filled her eyes once more.
âThere were no markers or remembrance stones. So, I was stupid, and I went to our old home. I said goodbye, and then I ran back to the safe house. I didnât realize that our home had been given to a friend of Roman. He saw me, followed me, and then told Roman where to find me. By the time Tomas returned to the safe house, Roman had already been there and âtaught me my lessonâ.â
Axel clenched his jaw as he remembered the night she had arrived, the glint of the metal in the moonlight, the look of pain she would get as she tried to eat or drink anything.
âNo, Tomas didnât bring Roman back⦠I think I did.â
âWhat? How?â
âThe night Wyatt told Ashleigh the truth about⦠everything⦠when I ran. I got so close to the border I felt something, something dark. I think⦠I think I felt him.â
âSo, you think he realized you were alive, and now he has come back to find you?â Axel asked.
âAlice already basically told you that was the case,â Bell said.
âThatâs true.â
âBesides, how else would she even know who I am? She told you to warn me, which means she had to know that I was hiding from him, and I assume why Iâm hiding from him.â
âIf Alice is worriedâ¦.â Axel sighed. âListen, I know you donât know her, but if sheâs concerned, it means the threat is real. So we need to take it seriously.â
âThe threat was always real,â Bell sighed.
âI know. I just meant that Alice has been through a lot. She isnât scared of much, but if she risked being caught to warn us⦠we need to take it seriously.â
âI am,â Bell said.
âI mean⦠you should ask Galen to come to Winter.â
Bell took a deep breath.
âI already told youââ
âI know,â Axel interrupted. âBut I really think you should reconsider.â
âDidnât you just say I have a whole pack ready to protect and defend me?â Bell smiled.
Axel swallowed and looked away.
âAxel?â
âGranger got Ashleigh from Summer without anyone knowing for an entire day.â
Bell turned away.
âSummer, as much as I hate to admit it, is far safer than Winter,â he said. âAll their defenses and security measures⦠they didnât see it happen. Here? Letâs be honest. He could be at your door before any of us realized it.â
She swallowed and took a deep breath through her nose.
âGranger was only able to get Ashleigh because Alice helped him,â she whispered.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Axel clenched his jaw and then looked to the ground.
Bell closed her eyes and internally punched herself.
âIâm sorry,â Bell sighed. âI shouldnât have said that.â
âItâs fine,â he said. âI am fully aware that Alice and I have a long road ahead. Assuming we ever get to travel it.â
Axel took a deep breath.
âMy point remains,â he said. âThis pack will do everything it can to protect you, but I canât always be with you. If Galen were here, he would be able to keep you safe.â
âI donât want him to know who my mate is,â she said. âOr that heâs looking for me.â
âBellââ
âAxel.â
Axel huffed.
âDo you really think it is the best idea to lie to your husband? To keep such a big secret?â he asked.
Bell took a deep breath and sighed.
âIf you knew who it was that was causing all of the pain in Aliceâs life, would you be able to hold yourself back?â she asked.
âI do know who it is,â Axel growled. âShe begged me to stay away from him for my own safety.â
âHow does that make you feel?â she asked.
âIt kills me,â he replied honestly.
Bell smiled.
âI donât want to do that to Galen.â
Axel sighed.
âHe wonât thank you for that,â he said. âAs I told you before, itâs cruel.â
âRoman has no reason to come to Winter,â Bell said. âTomas is busy plotting this war and hates Roman enough to keep my secret for now.â
âAt least move into Ashleighâs room,â Axel said. âThat way, we can be sure you are safe between my parents and me.â
âThat, I can do,â she smiled. âBut not until tomorrow. Tonight, I am going to call my husband and get some rest. Then, in the morning, I will pack a bag.â
âThen tonight, I will stay on your couch,â he stated firmly.
âNo, you wonât,â she laughed. âAre you trying to cause a scandal, my Alpha?â
Axel rolled his eyes.
âEveryone in Winter knows you are a sister to me,â he sighed.
âHardly!â she laughed. âDo you know how many people had bets on when we would get into a relationship? My wedding day was the happiest day of my life, but some of the nurses growled and groaned at me because of the bets they had lost.â
âWhy didnât I hear about this?â he asked.
âYou think these wolves want their Alpha to know there are bets on his love life?â Bell asked.
âAre? Currently?â
âOh yes, I believe you have been connected to a berserker, one of the scouts, and a general bet of a lesser pack wolf,â Bell nodded.
Axel pinched the bridge of his nose.
âThat is so ridiculous.â
âWait until they find out the truth!â Bell laughed.
