Chapter 292 Hollow Shell
Mated To An Enemy
âHe is insisting that he needs to go to Europe,â Holden sighed with irritation in his voice.
âDo you know why?â
âHe only said that his father hid something from him, that it might be in Paris or Florence,â Holden sighed. âI told him that it wasnât the right time for personal adventures, but he wouldnât listen.â
âI got the impression that you didnât like having Roman around,â the raspy voice called out.
âWhile it is true that I do not enjoy having him back,â Holden said. âHe is still a part of your plan.â
âYes,â the voice said. âBut for right now, he can be free to play games with his father. There is still time before we are ready for the next phase.â
âAnd what about Tomas?â Holden asked. âIt seems clear he is having difficulty following the plan, so what do we do with him?â
âKeep him under control by whatever means you deem fit,â the voice whispered. âForget the rest of the lesser packs. We have enough. Let the others think they have a chance.â
âWhat about Burning Ember?â Holden asked.
âWhat about them?â
âThey haveâ¦information about the packs weâve already takenâ¦.â Holden said.
âDo you really think that Caleb and the annoying Winter dog donât already know where the packs have âdisappearedâ to?â The voice scoffed.
Holden clenched his jaw, hating to leave loose ends.
âForget Burning Ember and the rest. Let them chase their tails, trying to figure out what we are planning. They will think we have been weakened or lost our momentum. They expect an attack any day. They will let down their guard when it does not come, and then we will strike.â
âAs you say,â Holden bowed..
Holden turned to leave the room.
âWhat of your doll?â the voice asked suspiciously.
âWhat about her?â Holden replied without turning.
âIâve heard she came home on her own,â the voice smiled, âawake.â
Holden swallowed.
âAlice has returned to Wonderland,â he replied.
âI see,â the voice replied. âAnd where is she now?â
âShe has returned to her tasks.â
A root tendril touched against Holdenâs shoulder. He closed his eyes and took a slow, measured breath.
âAnd what of the time she spent away?â the voice rasped. âWhat sorts of adventures did she have on her own?â
Holden swallowed and licked his lips.
âNothing of note,â he said.
The tendril slipped beneath his chin, and the rough texture of the root scratched and scraped as it moved across his throat.
âWould you tell me if there was something of note?â the voice asked, his words laced with unspoken meaning.
âI would tell you if there was anything to be concerned about,â Holden replied.
The tendril at his throat continued until it had wrapped around his head.
âHolden,â the voice whispered. âIf your broken doll does anything to ruin my plans⦠I will let Roman have her.â
Holden swallowed and took a breath.
âShe isnât his type,â he said, attempting to keep his voice even.
âNoâ¦â the voice replied, âyet he shows a keen interest in her.â
Holden clenched his jaw at the playful tone of his master.
âAlice will not be a problem,â he said.
âShe had better not be,â the voice whispered as the tendril slid away from Holdenâs throat.

âIt seems I owe you my thanks,â Roman smiled sweetly toward Alice as he entered her room.
Alice turned to face him. The expression on her face showed confusion and then understanding.
âYou are Roman, son of Alpha Tomas,â she said.
Roman took a disappointed breath.
âYouâve been altered again,â he sighed. âWhy do they do this to you?â
He continued toward her, walking around her and observing her as he spoke.
âWhy do they take that fire in you and snuff it out into this hollow shell?â he asked with a scoff.
âDarlinâ, I am made to order and provide the service that best fits my abilities,â she smiled and winked.
Roman shook his head with disgust.
âThatâs not you,â he whispered. âThatâs not even your voice.â
Roman moved to her, grabbing the back of her hair and pulling just enough to lift her chin.
She kept her smile. But something in her eyes changed, and then he felt the slightest tick of pain in his stomach. He looked down to see a small knife in her hand. The tip of the blade had pierced his abdomen just slightly.
The corner of his mouth lifted into a grin, and he looked back into her eyes. He recognized that something in them now. Hidden deep within her was that spark. The fire that burned brightly in her soul.
âThere she isâ¦â he whispered with relief. He brought his other hand up to stroke her cheek.
She pushed the knife forward enough to draw a quick hiss from his lips.
âTsk-tsk,â Alice smiled. âA gentleman should never put his hands on a lady. Especially without an invitation.â
Roman chuckled. He let her go and stepped back.
âThen why donât you invite me?â
âAww, darling, I fear you are the type that has trouble remembering safe words,â Alice smiled. Then she stepped away to continue packing, as she had been before this man entered the room.
Roman looked at her bag.
âYou are returning to Spring?â he asked.
âI am going where I am needed,â she replied.
âI am also leaving tonight,â he said, moving closer. âPerhaps we should share a proper goodbye.â
âI donât think we would have the same idea of what exactly that would look like,â Alice replied with a smile.
âMaybe we should find out?â Roman suggested with a grin.
âMy idea,â Alice said, raising her brow, âinvolves knives.â
Roman leaned forward until she could see the dark swirls in his fiery eyes.
âSo does mine,â he replied in a thick voice.
Alice swallowed.
âThatâs quite enough,â A voice from the door interjected.
Alice looked past Roman to see Holden standing in the doorway.
âOopsie,â she whispered. âDaddyâs mad.â
Roman chuckled and turned toward Holden.
âWe were only saying our goodbyes,â he shrugged.
âAlice?â Holden called.
âGoodbye, Roman,â Alice said, returning to her packing again.
âGoodbye, âAliceâ,â Roman replied without looking back at her.
He smiled at Holden as he left the room.
Holden clenched his jaw and took a deep breath before continuing into the room.
âWhat did he do?â he asked, turning Alice to face him. âAre you alright?â
Alice chuckled.
âOh please, Holden,â she laughed. âI can take care of myself. Iâm perfectly fine.â
âHeâs not just anyone, Alice. You donât know all the horrible things he is capable of,â Holden said, looking back toward the door.
âNo, I donât,â Alice replied. âBut even though I donât know much about him, I know he is dangerous. I get an awful feeling when heâs nearby. A sense of dread.â
âThat is because you were programmed to remember the danger you have been aware of since you were a child, but not the reason.â Holden thought.
âTrust that sense,â he said. âNow, come. It is time for you to get back to work. It seems that Summer has gotten themselves a new coding specialist, one that was able to stop your worm from destroying their system.â
âOh?â Alice asked with a smile. âSounds like a new playmate.â
Holden nodded as he grabbed her bag, and they left the room.
Alice took a break from punching the two dummies wearing Holden and Roman masks inside her mindscape.
âA new coding specialist?â she whispered aloud and smiled. âThat might be something I can use.â
