Chapter 324 To Avoid An Argument
Mated To An Enemy
Caleb clenched his jaw and gripped the phone in his hand so tightly it the plastic case began to crack.
He took a deep breath through his nose and slowly pushed it between his lips.
âHow is it that I am just hearing about this,â he said with an underlying tone of anger.
Galen sighed on the other end of the line.
âI am sorry. I know I overstepped.â
âYou think so?â Caleb growled.
âKnowing how Ashââ Galen started to reply but thought better of it, âhow our Luna feels about the topic of Alice and any potential connection to her. I wanted to confirm some of the information before I presented it to you.â
Caleb sighed. Galen wasnât wrong about how Ashleigh would react.
âI apologize, my Alpha,â Galen said.
Caleb could practically hear him lowering his head on the other side of the call. He felt a pang of guilt in his chest.
âThatâs enough,â Caleb sighed. âI understand. You were trying to keep me from being put in a difficult position. But that is not your call to make. I hope I wonât need to remind you of that in the future.â
âOf course not,â Galen replied.
âSo,â Caleb said. âWere you able to confirm it? Was the information she provided us real?â
âThe things I was able to check on, yes. There are details about Autumn that arenât possible for us to know if they are true or not, but it seems likely,â Galen replied. âItâs all on a flash drive for your review. I spoke with Nessa and asked her to put it together and give you a report this afternoon.â.
Caleb sighed again.
âNessaâ¦â he whispered.
âYeaâ¦â Galen replied.
âSheâs clearly skilled and generally likable,â Caleb said.
âAnd one of our newest and most supportive alliesâ daughtersâ¦.â Galen added.
âAnd Claraâs mate.â
âYep.â
âDonât suppose sheâll just behave from now on, do you?â Caleb asked, pinching the bridge of his nose, trying to fight off the headache that was beginning to form.
âI want to say yes,â Galen said. âBut chances are⦠no.â
Both men sighed.
âSheâs got a thing for Alice,â Galen said. âNot like a crush, I mean, she seems to admire her? Maybe?â
âAliceâ¦â Caleb said softly, thinking about the things he had learned from Sofia. âSheâs a popular topic these days.â
âWell, Nessa taught herself most of her computer knowledge. And our techs are far more⦠straight and narrow. I think Nessa feels a connection to Alice, like a hacker sister bond or something,â Galen said.
âThat makes sense, but I wasnât referring to Nessa.â
âWho else?â Galen asked.
âI learned some interesting things about Alice in Burning Ember. Or at least⦠I was told some things, but they could be lies or games she is playing.â
âWhat kinds of things?â Galen asked quietly. As he felt an uneasiness, wondering if someone had found out about Axelâs connection to her.
Caleb sat down in his chair and took a deep breath.
âWhere to beginâ¦â he sighed.
Caleb told Galen about his conversation with Sofia, how Alice had called herself a doll, and the rumors that she was a new person everywhere she went.
Galen listened without saying a word.
âEverything that Sofia said could be true,â Caleb said. âAlice could have been a victim of this torture and manipulation since she was a child.â
Caleb paused.
âYou donât believe it?â Galen asked.
âI donât know,â Caleb replied honestly. âItâs just as likely that sheâs simply really good at manipulating people into trusting her.â
Galen chewed his bottom lip, thinking, considering. Then, finally, he took a deep breath and decided.
âItâs true,â he said.
âWhat?â Caleb asked, leaning forward in his chair in his surprise. âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, itâs true, what Sofia told you,â Galen said. âAlice has been treated with Bitter Night since she was a child. Spring uses her as their doll, programming and sending her out, then rewriting her, so she doesnât remember.â
Caleb leaned his head back as he absorbed what he was hearing.
âHow do you know?â he asked.
âSomeone I trust who wouldnât lie told me very recently,â Galen said. âI canât tell you who. I promised to keep that information to myself.â
He closed his eyes. In truth, he had hoped it was a lie. Not just because it would make things easier for him, but because of the idea that a child had been treated in such a way⦠that she was still being treated like that, it disgusted and enraged him.
âIt seems more and more likely, that Alice really has been trying to help us,â Galen said. âAs much as she is able.â
âYeaâ¦â Caleb sighed. âI still donât think Ash is going to see it that way. Not without proof.â
âIâm not really sure how we would get that without Alice herself.â
Caleb grunted in agreement.
The men were silent for a long time.
âThank you,â Caleb finally said. âFor trying to help me to avoid an argument with my wife.â
Galen chuckled softly.
âNo one wants their wife mad at them,â he said. Then, gathering his nerve, he added, âor their best friend.â
Caleb paused and sighed.
âNo,â he said. âItâs not a pleasant feeling.â
âCaleb, listen, please, I just want to sayââ
âGalen,â Caleb interrupted. âI know.â
Galen quieted.
âIâm trying to move past it. Ashleigh, mom, theyâve got your back,â he scoffed gently. âTheyâve told me that I have no reason to be angry with you, that they would have done the same thing.â
Caleb paused, swallowing down the painful feeling.
âI know I probably would have, too,â he said. âBut I canât stop seeing you holding the dagger above her.
âIn my heart, I have forgiven you. I know youâre a good man, my best friend. My brother. But the thought that you put the woman I love in dangerâ¦.â
Caleb paused as his voice began to crack, and angry tears filled his eyes. He took a long deep breath through his nose.
âJust give me a little time,â he whispered.
âI understand,â Galen replied sadly. âIâll take whatever I can get. Just know if you need me, Iâm here. Always.â
Caleb sniffled and then forced a laugh.
âYea, all the way in Winter,â he said, trying to make a joke. âDid you run away to hide behind your wife just because I was a little mad?â
Galen chuckled.
âI wish that was the reason,â he sighed. âCaleb, I didnât come home to Bell just because of the baby or because I missed her.â
âWhatâs going on?â Caleb asked, leaning forward on his desk as he suddenly grew concerned.
âBellâs mate knows sheâs alive,â Galen said. âHeâs looking for her.â
âFuck,â Caleb sighed.
âYea.â
âWhat can I do?â Caleb asked.
âNothing right now,â Galen said. âAccording to Alice, he left the country. It sounds like she did something to make him believe that Bell was in Europe.â
âAlice⦠againâ¦â Caleb sighed.
âBelieve me, I know,â Galen laughed. âI was convinced it was all a setup, and she was plotting something, but⦠sheâs not.â
Caleb shook his head, wishing it were that easy to just accept and move on.
âSo this is the reason for the full defense update of Winter,â Caleb said. âMom just assumed you were being a very paranoid father-to-be.â
âI mean⦠two birds, one stone, right?â Galen replied.
The two brothers laughed together.
