Chapter 358 Shadows of the Past
Mated To An Enemy
A message from Saul had cut off their conversation early. Still, even as Axel walked away, Ashleigh felt better about where they stood.
âIt will take time and listening to each other,â Lilyâs gentle voice whispered in her mind.
Ashleigh turned, unsurprised to find that the world had once again shifted into the slightly altered version of Lilyâs Rest.
âCan he hear you?â Ashleigh asked.
âNot like you can,â Lily said. âI can give him impressions, hints. But we canât speak like you and I do.â
âIs that why he felt drawn here today?â
âHe felt drawn here because his heart is raw and he sought comfort from what he sees as the personification of the Goddessâs blessing through the bond,â she sighed, looking around. âAnd because he dreams of marrying his mate here. But he doesnât believe it will ever happen.â
Ashleigh looked away.
âBut I did call you here because he was already here.â
Ashleigh looked back at Lily.
âI told you to talk to your brother,â Lily shrugged. âYou were taking too long.â
Ashleigh sighed and turned away, she looked around and realized that the sphere was gone.
âWhere are they?â she asked.
âWhere they belong, for now,â Lily replied.
âWhere is that?â
Lily considered before answering.
âBefore I was made into a wolf,â she began, looking around as though she expected to be stopped. âI had a gift. It was very rare and unique among⦠my people. But both my brother and I shared the gift.â
âWhat kind of gift?â Ashleigh asked.
âWe could hear the voices of the dead.â
Ashleighâs eyes went wide.
âAt least, we thought we could,â Lily smiled. âI learned much later that what we heard was the memories they left behind.â
âAmong all of my descendants, not one of them had this gift. At least not until, you.â
ã âWhat?â Ashleigh asked. âBut I donât⦠I canâtâ¦â
âItâs true your gift is not the same as mine was, I heard them everywhere, but you only hear the ones that remain with me.â
âWhat?â
âThe voices you hear⦠the lights you saw before. They are my descendants, but only a piece of each of them,â she said. âThey lived their lives, and when they died, they took their place alongside the Goddess to be born anew.â
Ashleigh sat down on the stones where she and Axel had first sat to talk.
âBut, left behind were their memories, the moments that meant the most in their lives. Those powerful emotions and beliefs. The victories, the celebrations⦠the defeats and the losses.â
Lily paused, looking at the flowers that grew along the water.
âDo you know what happens to a memory over time?â
Ashleigh shook her head.
âIt twists and bends, folds in on itself and suddenly becomes something entirely different,â she said. âWhat about emotions? Do you know what the most powerful and lasting emotions are?â
âLove?â Ashleigh asked.
âIs it?â Lily asked with a sad smile. âIt should be.â
Ashleigh felt the grief in Lilyâs voice.
âWhat is it then?â she asked.
âItâs the darker stuff,â Lily replied softly. âAnger, depression, fear, anxietyâ¦. Happiness and love, excitement⦠they are strong, but they need to be fed. They need to move forward and experience life in order to grow and flourish.
âBut when you canât move forward, when your time has ended and you are just a memory of a life once lived. Itâs hard to hold on to the good things. The memory of a feeling is hardly the same as the real thing.
âSometimes, the memory of joy or happiness is worse than torture. It can leave a void of longing and depression, twisting the memory again and again until it has been reshaped into a nightmare.â
Ashleigh suddenly felt her heart pounding in her chest.
âSo they⦠your descendants areââ
âShadows of the past,â Lily finished her thought. âLong-held grudges, regrets, all-consuming hatred⦠all the dark thoughts and fears of the former Alphas of Winter.â
Ashleigh swallowed. The dark thoughts and fears of the former Alphas of Winter. That was whom she had accepted.
âWhy didnât you warn me?â Ashleigh asked, her heart pounding in her ears.
âI didnât know,â Lily said. âNot at first.â
Lily sat down in front of Ashleigh.
âWhen you called me to you, and you brought all the others as separate entities⦠it was strange. I hadnât been separated from them since before I died. I wasnât focused on the reason it had happened or the consequences of it.
âBut when I saw that you could hear them, I tried to call them back into me. It worked, but only for a little while. They got stronger, and I got weaker. Their voices overpowered mine. You started listening to them.â
She took a breath.
âAnd then they distracted me,â she said sadly, âI tried to get you to focus on your own thoughts butââ
âTried to get me to focus on my own thoughts?â Ashleigh scoffed. âWhy not just tell me what was happening to me? Why all the cryptic bullshit!â
âYou have known their voices in your mind for only a few months, I have been surrounded by them for a thousand years!â Lily snarled as she rose to her feet.
Ashleigh recoiled at the sudden change in Lily, but she recovered quickly.
âI thought I was losing my mind!â she shouted back. âI said horrible things to my brother, I tried to hurt people! You could have done something, but you didnât!â
Lily growled and moved closer to Ashleigh.
âDo you ever get tired of feeling like you are the only one suffering?!â Lily shouted, her eyes glowing brightly with the bright white light of the moon.
Ashleigh was frozen in place, all around her, the air felt thick and heavy. Almost all of the warmth and color had been sucked away, and she found herself standing in a sepia-toned version of Lilyâs Rest.
Before her, Lily breathed hard. Her armor was disheveled and cracked in many places. Her face was covered in blood and bruises.
âWhatâs happening?â Ashleigh asked hesitantly.
âYou are not the only person that suffers,â Lily whispered. âI have tried to help you, I have tried to protect you.â
âI donât understand.â
âThe voices you hear are only three or four, but there are hundreds!â Lily answered. âWhile those three whisper in your ear and you listen, I stay here and defend her from all the rest!â
Lily pointed her sword, and Ashleigh followed it with her eyes, gasping at what she saw.
On the ground, lying on the stone floor covered in patches of dried blood and dirt was a large white wolf.
The wolf opened its eyes, and it sniffed the air. Then, it lifted its head and looked at Ashleigh. Their hazel eyes met. Ashleigh felt something inside of her, a connection that stretched between them.
âMy Lunaâ¦.?â Ashleigh whispered.
She took a step forward, but the wolf growled. Then, with some effort, it got to its feet and limped away.
âShe doesnât recognize you,â Lily whispered.
âBut⦠â
âAre you any different?â Lily asked.
Ashleigh looked back at Lily.
âWhat?â
âDo you still recognize yourself?â
Lilyâs voice faded as the world around Ashleigh returned and she found herself back where she started, alone.
