Nessa averted her gaze, her face flushing almost instantly.
âI⦠I didnât mean it like that,â she replied softly. âI was talking to Lady Sentariâ¦.â
âOk, I need more explanation on what exactly that means,â Clara sighed.
Nessa took a breath.
âLady Sentari,â Alice said from her seat in Axelâs lap, âwas the character I played for a few weeks in Nessaâs Dungeons and Dragons group.â
Axel pressed his lips to her neck softly.
âYou played games together?â he asked, purposefully whispering against her throat. âShould we play a game?â
Alice took a soft breath and smiled.
âThatâs hotâ¦.â Bell whispered.
A low growl brought her attention to Galen, holding Ren in his arms. Bell grinned.
âThatâs hotter.â
Galen could not help the smile that formed on his lips.
âShe came in as a temporary character while one of our normal players was unavailable. I never even met her; she was just a voice over the computer as we played through a side quest on our adventure.â
âShe seems to have left quite an impression on you for only being a voice on the computer,â Clara sighed.
Nessa stepped forward, placing her hands on Claraâs elbows. Clara tried to hide her reaction, the sharp intake of breath, but she couldnât help it. The rarity of feeling the warmth of Nessaâs touch made it that much more stimulating.
And that was precisely why she was so bothered by Nessaâs closeness to Alice. Clara pulled away.
âIâm sorry, Clarebear,â Nessa said sweetly with her own pout, but Clara seemed unwilling to listen. âI was just surprised.â
Alice observed the two of them. She turned and whispered into Axelâs ear before she stood from his lap against his wishes.
âExcuse me,â she said, tapping on Claraâs shoulder.
Clara turned and took a deep breath as Alice gave her a warm smile. Clara couldnât help her own lips curling upward.
âYes?â she replied.
âIâm sorry,â Alice said sweetly. âI didnât mean to cause any confusion between the two of you⦠I just thought it would be fun to surprise Nessa with our former acquaintance.â
âHeh⦠yeaâ¦â Clara laughed nervously as she looked up into Aliceâs warm chocolate eyes. âI could see⦠how.. uhm⦠that would be fun. And she has really great reactionsâ¦.â
Alice touched Claraâs shoulder.
âThank you for understanding,â she whispered, leaning close and licking her lips with a playful smile.
Clara blushed as she took a deep breath.
Suddenly she felt herself moving back away from Alice with a warmth stretched across her chest.
Clara came to a stop against something soft. She glanced down and saw Nessaâs arm across her chest and suddenly realized that the warmth on her back was that of Nessaâs body pressed to her.
Claraâs eyes widened, and they met with Alice for a moment, who smiled and gave her a wink before returning to Axelâs lap.
Nessa laid her head against Claraâs and whispered against her ear.
âOnly I can make your heart race like that.â
Claraâs heart was racing all right.
She licked her lips and nodded.
âI want to be alone with you,â Nessa whispered, pressing a gentle kiss just below Claraâs ear.
Again, Clara nodded, and the two of them quickly left the mess hall.
âThat was kind of you,â Axel whispered.
Alice smiled.
He squeezed his arm around her waist. Pulling her against his body and nuzzling his nose into the crook of her neck, giving her a gentle bite.
âDonât do it again,â he whispered.
âNo promises,â Alice giggled in response.
Galen cleared his throat.
âYou know we are still here, right?â
Axel looked up and shrugged.
Galen rolled his eyes, and Bell laughed.
âSo⦠you played dungeons and dragons?â Bell asked.
âSort of,â Alice replied. âIt was part of an assignment.â
âTo play a game?â Galen asked.
âTechnically, most of what I did was play games,â Alice replied. âFlirting with you during the exchange was a game.â
Galen didnât bother to look at Axel. He felt his imposing gaze on him.
âLook, man, I had no part and no interest in any of that, so stop murdering me with your eyes!â
Alice and Bell laughed.
âActually, your dislike of my attention worked in my favor. You tried so hard to avoid me that it was easier for me to access the places I wasnât supposed to.â
âSo, you flirted with me because you knew I wouldnât like it?â Galen asked.
âMy intel on you was that you are loyal to a fault and that you had your eyes on a particular wolf already,â Alice smiled in Bellâs direction. âSo, I took a chance. I figured your loyalty to her would make it unpleasant to deal with my flirtation. While your loyalty to Summer and the diplomatic repercussions of the exchange would stop you from taking action against my behavior.â
âHuh⦠so you were never really interested in me?â Galen asked.
Bell and Axel both turned their attention to him, one with a look of curiosity and the other with murderous intent.
Alice leaned forward with her elbow on the table. She rested her chin in her hand.
âDo you really want to know?â she asked with a devious grin.
Galen swallowed, suddenly feeling very trapped.
âExcuse me, are you Alice?â
They all turned to a woman standing a few feet from the table.
âThatâs me,â Alice replied.
âWe received a package for you,â the woman said, holding up a box.
Alice stood up and approached the woman.
âThank you,â she said, taking the small box.
The woman nodded and walked away.
âWhat is it?â Axel asked.
âNot sure,â Alice replied, sitting down in the chair beside him as she opened the box.
âWe need to go,â Bell said. âThe convoy leaves in the morning, and there are a few things I need to see personally.â
Galen nodded sadly.
âWeâll see you guys later,â he said.
Axel nodded and waved as they gathered their things and left the table.
âSo⦠do you?â Bell asked as they walked away.
âWhat?â Galen replied.
âWant to know the answer.â
âHey Ren, look, itâs Grandma Fiona!â Galen said and suddenly hurried away.
Axel sniggered as he watched them leave the mess hall.
âThe protection detail on the convoyâ¦.â Alice said. âWe should increase it.â
Axel turned to her with furrowed brows. She stared into the box, her jaw clenched and a look of concern in her eyes.
He reached out and took her hand.
âWhat is in the box, Alice?â he asked.
Alice swallowed.
âItâs not what is in it that concerns me right now,â she said, reaching in and pulling out a folded paper. âBut who sent it.â
Axel took the paper from her hand and opened it.
[Youâre finally free, no more doll, no more leash. Now neither of us is caged.
See you soon, my Alice.
Yours,
Roman]
