Chapter 443 Very Specific Instructions
Mated To An Enemy
The scans showed no change in the lesions. They were neither improving nor getting worse.
Aliceâs sudden inability to communicate was likely due to her fear and stress of the situation triggering the side effects of the lesions.
The doctor put her in a room to be monitored for a few hours. They also gave her a mild sedative to help calm her down.
While Ashleigh took Alice to the hospital, Caleb took the laptop and the flash drive to Nessa for a diagnostic.
âOof⦠yep. This little guy dropped some massive spyware onto the laptop. Luckily it couldnât break its way into the system, but it looks like it was eavesdropping.â
âSo Roman didnât send that to her as a twisted love letter, just a way to spy?â Caleb asked.
âI donât know the guy, so I canât really answer that, but based on all the stories Iâve heard⦠why canât it be both?â
Caleb sighed.
âGood news is, Alice smashed the crap out of this thing, so itâs effectively inoperable and canât try to connect with our systems. The bad news is whoever was on the receiving end would have heard everything discussed around this laptop. That includes the convoy plans.â
âBut not the fae descendantsâ stuff!â Clara chimed in. âThat was discussed here, and Alice didnât have her laptop.â
âThatâs true,â Caleb said. âSo, they would have known from the video in the lab that Ashleigh had some kind of unique powers, and with the way Axel handled Roman in Winter, I am guessing he just assumed both of them would have fae attributes.â
âOhâ¦â Nessa whispered.
âWhat?â Caleb asked. âWhatâs wrong?â
Nessa sighed and chewed her lower lip.
âNexy? What is it?â Clara asked.
Nessa shook her head.
âItâs just more of the sameâ¦â she said sadly. âI just found out how Roman dropped the spyware onto the laptop. It didnât make sense that it would have been attached to the video, not with how aggressive it is. But the video wasnât the only thing he sent her. This dude⦠heâs a real piece of work.â

Alice opened her eyes. Looking around the room, she recognized that she was back in the hospital.
âYouâre awake,â Ashleigh said from the door.
âHow long have I been out?â Alice asked, sitting up in bed.
âAbout twelve hours,â Ashleigh said.
Alice took a deep breath and leaned her back with her eyes closed.
âI was supposed to call Axel at least twice by now,â she sighed. âGuess Iâll be in trouble again.â
âI talked to him last night and this morning. He is well aware of what is going on. Iâm sure he wonât be upset with you,â Ashleigh said reassuringly.
âAwww⦠but I like being in trouble,â Alice smiled.
âI⦠donât know what to do with thatâ¦.â
âOh, come on, like you and golden boy donât play naughty from time to time,â Alice teased.
âOkay, you are clearly feeling all better now,â Ashleigh sighed.
Alice laughed at the blush that invaded Ashleighâs cheeks.
Pushing Ashleighâs button was becoming a soothing game for Alice. Had she ever laughed so frequently before?
âWhatâs that?â Alice asked, eyeing the bag in Ashleighâs hand.
Ashleigh stepped beside the bed and put the bag on Aliceâs lap.
âLook for yourself,â she said with a smile.
Alice grinned and opened the bag. Inside, she found sunflower seeds, cheese crackers, a small box of mixed fruits, and two bottles of the blackberry flavored water Axel had introduced to her.
âThese are some of my favorites,â Alice said, looking up at Ashleigh.
âI know,â Ashleigh said. âMy brother was very specific with his instructions; I even pulled out all of the cantaloupe and pineapple from the mixed fruit.â
Aliceâs eyes widened, and she lifted the clear plastic tub into the air to inspect it from every angle. Ashleigh wasnât kidding. There was no sign of either disgusting filler fruit.
âThatâs amazing!â Alice smiled. âYou know those two will infect all the other fruit. If you leave it in, then all the othersââ
âEnd up tasting like pineapple, I know. Like I said, very specific instructions.â
Alice laughed, remembering Axel back in their home. He would sit at the kitchen counter, pulling out all the cantaloupe and pineapple from her fruit bowls and then put them back in the fridge.
She sighed, missing him. Alice took a deep breath and opened the small package of cheese crackers. She looked at Ashleigh.
âSo, how will I be punished?â she asked, taking a bite of her cracker.
âWhat?â
âI caused the attack on the convoy, the convoy was primarily made up of people in Summerâs care, so I assume you and Caleb are the ones with a claim to my sentencing.â
âAlice⦠we arenât going to punish you,â Ashleigh replied, sitting in the chair beside Aliceâs bed. âYou didnât knowingly cause the attack.â
âIt was my fault,â Alice said. âI know better than anyone never to blindly accept a gift.â
That was when Ashleigh noticed something. Even though Axel had told her the fruit was Aliceâs favorite, and she had removed the offending pineapple and cantaloupe pieces, Alice was ignoring it and only eating prepackaged food.
âIâm not going to poison you,â Ashleigh said.
Alice smiled.
âHabit, better safe than sorry.â
The only person Alice would accept unpackaged from was Axel. She appreciated the effort on Ashleighâs part, but she just didnât trust her yet.
âAlice,â Ashleigh said.
Alice lifted her eyes to meet Ashleighâs.
âWhat did you mean when you said the laptop contained âcursed treasuresâ?â
Alice looked away.
âEvery pirate story has the same lesson,â she said. âThe treasure they seek always comes at a greater cost.â
âSo, what was the treasure you were seeking?â Ashleigh asked.
Alice swallowed and then took a deep breath before looking at Ashleigh.
âI have always known one person. Only one. In every version of the doll, the only person I remembered every single time was my father, Holden,â she said. âOver the years, as I started to wake up⦠I began to ask about my mother. I wanted to know her name, who she was, where she was.â
Ashleigh listened carefully.
âHolden refused, even at the end, to give me her name,â Alice chuckled with an evident bitterness. âI remembered bits⦠her hair⦠her favorite dress⦠Holden killing her.â
Alice clenched her jaw and closed her eyes.
âBut that was all. Not even her name.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âRoman gave you her name, didnât he?â Ashleigh asked gently.
Alice nodded.
âSavannah. Savannah Williams,â she replied, keeping her eyes down. âHe gave me a folder full of information about her and me during my life as a human. I didnât read much of it. I just wanted her name⦠it felt important somehow.â
Ashleigh nodded.
âBut, my need for this âtreasureâ put Axel, Bell, Ren, and all those other people at risk,â Alice said quietly. âIâm sorry.â
âRoman was going to attack that convoy one way or another,â Ashleigh said. âYou didnât do this, Alice.â
Alice scoffed quietly.
âYouâre the one that told me you donât apologize for things you didnât do, right?â
Alice lifted her eyes, and Ashleigh smiled at her.
Alice chuckled and sniffled.
âAre we supposed to braid each otherâs hair now?â Alice laughed.
âOh Goddess, noâ¦.â Ashleigh laughed. âI still donât like you.â
âOh good, I thought I would have to start being nice to you,â Alice smiled.
