Chapter 48 Curiouser and Curiouser
Mated To An Enemy
âThat is not what I said!â Ashleigh shouted angrily.
She was surprised by her own voice.
âDidnât you?â Granger asked coldly.
âNo, Granger,â she stated clearly, âI didnât.â
âHow else am I supposed to take it?â he asked.
âExactly how I meant it!â she answered, âThe Goddess made a mistake! There is no record of another wolf having two mates; itâs a mistake.â
âOr Caleb is using dark magic against Winter.â
Ashleigh growled in frustration. She wanted to be patient with him, to understand where he was coming from. But the ridiculousness of his words was too much.
âIâm not making it up! There are reportsââ Granger began.
âWhat reports?â she demanded.
Granger looked away from her, unsure how to respond. He didnât even remember all that Holden had said, only that there had been reports of Summer using fae magic.
âDoes my father suspect this?â she asked, stepping closer to him, âdid he show you a report claiming that Alpha Caleb was using fae magic?â
âNo,â Granger answered quietly.
âThen who?â she asked, a barely audible growl under her words..
Granger felt the heat of his anger rising as he witnessed how she tried to protect Caleb.
âI canât tell you.â
âWhy not?â she asked, crossing her arms over her chest as she watched him closely.
âIt was shared with me in confidence.â
âThen you saw it? Proof of these claims, not just someoneâs ideas or words?â
He growled.
She growled back.
âSo desperate to protect your mate?â he asked venom in his voice.
Ashleigh gritted her teeth.
âYes, I am,â she hissed coldly.
Grangerâs eyes widened, and he felt as though he had been punched in the gut.
âYou!â she shouted angrily. âIdiot.â
âMe?â he questioned.
âYes, you!â she paced back and forth for a moment, calming her frustrations. âYou go around claiming that an Alpha is using fae magic. There will be consequences.â
âThen I should just sit back and relax while he manipulates you and tries to take you away from me?â
âNo one is manipulating me!â Ashleigh shouted. âAnd I already told you, Iâm not going anywhere!â
âIf heâs using magic, you might not have a choice,â Granger said firmly.
Ashleigh growled again, this time letting her frustration out by hitting the sandbag closest to her.
âHe isnât using fae magic! He canât!â
âHow do you know?â he asked, crossing his arms over his chest.
Letting out a frustrated sigh, she closed her eyes to think.
âIf I donât find a way to prove it to him, he wonât let this go. But if I tell him, I am breaking my word.â
Ashleigh looked up at him once more, he was angry, but below the anger, she saw the hurt and the genuine love he held for her.
âHe is my mate. I have chosen to spend my life with him. So I can trust him.â
With a resigned sigh, she approached him.
âI am going to tell you something that you cannot tell anyone else,â she began, âI gave my word that this would remain a secret.â
âBetween you and Caleb?â Granger asked icily.
âShut up and listen,â Ashleigh growled.
Granger took a deep breath in an attempt to calm down, it didnât do much, but he nodded for her to continue.
âI know that Caleb isnât able to use fae magic because I know that it can only be used by someone possessing fae blood,â she said quietly. âThe person who told me this was my father.â
Granger felt his anger slipping away as it was replaced by confusion.
âHow would he know that?â
âKnowledge passed down from alpha to alpha. I wasnât supposed to hear it, he was teaching Axel, and I kind of snuck into the room,â she answered with a small smile, âhe caught me and made me promise to keep it to myself. But I am trusting you to keep this a secret. Because you are my mate.â
âWhat else did he say?â Granger asked.
âI donât know. He made me leave. But I didnât need to know, so I didnât ask any further.â
For a moment, neither of them said anything. Finally, she was sure he was processing and would understand.
âHolden is a wolf of Spring; all they do is gather information. He must know something Alpha Wyatt doesnât,â Granger thought to himself.
He shook his head and turned away from her.
âCaleb must have found a way around it.â Granger sighed.
âAre you kidding me?â Ashleighâs irritated voice demanded, âAre you that desperate to make him into the bad guy?â
âItâs not just me!â Granger shouted back at her, âI told you there are reports of fae magic in Summer!â
Ashleigh felt the frustration in her rising to a boiling point.
âWho is whispering in your ear?â She wondered to herself as the frustration grew. âWhy are you so convinced of this?!â
A brief memory flashed a mischievous smile and sparkling eyes into her mind.
âAliceâ¦she must have seen the simulations too,â she sighed to herself. âDamn spy,â
âThere is no fae magic!â she shouted, no longer worried about hiding her irritation. âSummer uses technology. They have simulations and lights and mirrors! It isnât magic! Caleb runs simulations using fae creatures from our history books! Itâs a damn training exercise!â
âWhat?â Granger asked. He hadnât heard anything about fae creatures before.
âI am telling you, Granger, stop saying these idiotic things before someone else hears you!â Ashleigh snarled at him before turning away and storming off.
âAshleigh!â he called after her, the door slammed, and he was left alone once more with his thoughts.
***
âI donât know why I listened to you!â Granger growled, slamming the mug on the counter. âSo much for Spring, always having the best information!â
âWhat do you mean?â Holden asked, showing concern.
Granger looked over at the short man. For once, that Cheshire cat grin was not plastered on his face. Somehow, seeing the shock and confusion on Holdenâs face made him feel a little better. At least he wasnât the only idiot today.
âYou made me look like an idiot,â Granger grumbled. âAre there even any reports that Summer is using Fae magic? Or were you just messing with me?â
Granger gave Holden a dangerous look that he was wise enough to recognize.
âI truly donât know what you mean. I have been given the same information I gave to you, my friend.â
Granger scoffed.
âWell, itâs wrong.â
âOh?â Holden asked, his curiosity piqued. He tempered his voice to keep it from showing. âBut my understanding is that there is evidence of such use.â
âWhat kind of evidence?â Granger asked.
âPhotographs of fae creatures within the Summer territories.â
âPfft.â Granger laughed. He didnât know if it was the alcohol settling into his system that made him feel better or just hearing Holden make the same mistakes he had. âThose are simulations. Training exercises. Itâs tech, not magic.â
âThatâs a rather convenient excuse.â Holden offered, testing the waters of Grangerâs willingness to share information. âOne easily come up with by a man as tricky as Alpha Caleb. Iâd say the possibility still exists that they are using fae magic.â
âSummer isnât using fae magic,â Granger stated, rolling his eyes at Holdenâs insistence. âThey canât.â
âAnd why is that?â asked Holden carefully.
âOnly someone with fae blood can activate fae magic.â Granger sighed as he took a drink.
âCuriouser and curiouser,â Holden whispered to himself. A dark smile crept onto Holdenâs face, unseen by Granger, who focused entirely on his mug.
