Chapter 496 A Spark Of Life
Mated To An Enemy
ââ¬ÅAll right, how do you want to do this?ââ¬ï¿½ Lily asked. ââ¬ÅShould we go over everything and then slowly choose a topic to explore further, or we couldââ¬âââ¬Å
ââ¬ÅLoki is your brother?!ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅOh, okay, so weââ¬â¢re just going to dive straight in... got it... Uhm... yea, he was my twin brother.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅHow could you not have told me that Loki was... I mean... he is considered the greatest enemy of Winter!ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅThatââ¬â¢s exactly why I couldnââ¬â¢t tell you,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily sighed. ââ¬ÅThat and the fact that if I had told you before everything was revealed to you, you would have had a seizure or something.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅWhy?ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅYour Goddess, my Queen,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily paused, taking a deep breath and pushing it back out through her nose. ââ¬ÅMy mother... she insisted that the heritage of the wolves be kept a secret. After everything Loki did, she didnââ¬â¢t want the trust between werewolves and humans to be damaged.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅI donââ¬â¢t understand... I thought she died before he did.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅShe did,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily replied, ââ¬Åbut Lokiââ¬â¢s rebellion lasted much longer than your history seems to remember.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅWhat do you mean?ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅWell, your stories talk about Geri and Freki choosing to leave the humans and build Winter away from them because the humans no longer trusted the wolves. But that wasnââ¬â¢t the case. We lived among the humans, Loki killed many, and when Geri led the wolves against him, it wasnââ¬â¢t a quick fight. It lasted years. By the time it was over, the people Geri had fought to protect had already grown, died, or left.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅWhat?ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh asked with disbelief.
Lily nodded.
ââ¬ÅThat play, the one that shows my death?ââ¬ï¿½ she said.
Ashleigh nodded in acknowledgment.
ââ¬ÅI told you before that it was wrong,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily continued. ââ¬ÅIn it, your actors said I was searching for a lost child. But the truth is, Geri and I only had one child. When I went out that night, it was in search of Loki. He had sent me letters, begging me to listen to him.
ââ¬ÅHe told me that the Dark Queenââ¬â¢s voice was shouting in his mind. She had taken control of him, but he was fighting and thought he finally found a way to break free of her.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅHe led you into a trap,ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh whispered. ââ¬ÅHe never wanted to break free of her....ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅNo, he did,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily replied sadly. ââ¬ÅIt was a trap, but it wasnââ¬â¢t because he didnââ¬â¢t want to be free.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅI donââ¬â¢t understand,ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh said, brows furrowed in confusion.
ââ¬ÅHe knew exactly how to free himself,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily said. ââ¬ÅHe just didnââ¬â¢t want to go alone.ââ¬ï¿½
Ashleighââ¬â¢s eyes widened.
ââ¬ÅHe called me to the forest to do exactly what he did, to kill me,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily continued, her eyes cast down. ââ¬ÅHe was going to end his own life as well. But the Dark Queen realized what he was doing. She took control of him and tried to feed on me. She didnââ¬â¢t get far before Loki... finished it.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅLily...ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh whispered.
ââ¬ÅGeri arrived at that point. He saw Loki run me through, and he saw me fall. Loki got away, and though the story in your play says he was killed that same night, it was months later.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅIââ¬â¢m so sorry, Lily,ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh said gently.
ââ¬ÅIt was a long time ago,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily replied. ââ¬ÅThe point is my mother made the Lunas swear an oath to her. Therefore, they could not reveal the truth about the origins of the werewolf unless there was a dire need.
ââ¬ÅAn oath to a Fae Queen is bound in blood, not just their own. If they had told you before it was time, it wouldnââ¬â¢t have been just them that suffered.ââ¬ï¿½
Ashleigh thought for a moment, and then it clicked.
ââ¬ÅMy brother, Caleb, Bell... Ren...ââ¬ï¿½ she whispered.
ââ¬ÅMyka, too,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily said. ââ¬ÅAnd Roman.ââ¬ï¿½
Ashleighââ¬â¢s eyes widened, and her jaw went slack.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
ââ¬ÅWhat did you say?ââ¬ï¿½ she asked.
ââ¬ÅRoman,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily nodded. ââ¬ÅHe is the product of a Blood Moon mating between Tomas and Irina before she discovered her bond with Gorn.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅRoman...ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh whispered with a shake of her head. ââ¬ÅItââ¬â¢s bad enough heââ¬â¢s still alive, but now youââ¬â¢re telling me he is the son of the woman possessed by the evil ancient Fae Queen?!ââ¬ï¿½
Lily shrugged.
ââ¬ÅLifeââ¬â¢s funny like that.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅOkay, fine, whatever...we knew we were going to have to face him again anyway,ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh sighed. ââ¬ÅTell me about Irina, or rather, tell me what you said to Solana about Irina having never made it back to the ley line.ââ¬ï¿½
Lily lowered her gaze.
ââ¬ÅPart of my ability with the dead is seeing and talking to those returning to the ley line. I have seen every soul since my death that has crossed over. Very few stay behind. But Irina didnââ¬â¢t just stay behind. She disappeared.ââ¬ï¿½
Lily paused.
ââ¬ÅWhen the Dark Queen took control of Loki and tried to feed on me... I could feel my soul crumbling away into nothingness. I could feel the cold darkness crawling up my spine, reaching for my consciousness. It felt empty. That is what Irinaââ¬â¢s presence in this world became after the Dark Queen took control.ââ¬ï¿½
Lily turned to face Ashleigh.
ââ¬ÅThat is why I believe that her soul was consumed. Made into energy to fuel the monster.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅHow is that possible?ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh asked. ââ¬ÅHow could the Dark Queen feed off someone elseââ¬â¢s soul.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅSheââ¬â¢s a Fae Queen,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily replied as though the answer was obvious.
ââ¬ÅOkay... and?ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅWhat do you think an oath to the Goddess is?ââ¬ï¿½ Lily asked, one eyebrow cocked. ââ¬ÅYou pledge a part of your soul to her for her magic to give you what you want or need. Then, you fuel her magic with your blood offering.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅBut that isnââ¬â¢t... we havenââ¬â¢t...ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh wanted to argue that it wasnââ¬â¢t the same at all. But the truth was, she didnââ¬â¢t know if it was.
An oath made to the Goddess was not something to be made lightly. Breaking an oath had severe consequences. An Alpha could lose their abilities, their power over the wolves in their charge.
Knowing that the power of the Alpha came from their connection to the Fae Queen made it seem far more likely that what Lily said was true, which meant that every oath she had given had taken at least a small part of her soul.
ââ¬ÅWhat happens to you when you break the oath?ââ¬ï¿½ she asked with concern.
Lily considered the question.
ââ¬ÅIf you break an oath to the Dark Queen, she consumes your soul slowly and painfully. Breaking an oath with my mother, the result depends on the offense.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅMy father broke an oath....ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh said quietly. ââ¬ÅDoes that mean he was... that the Goddess... consumed him?ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅNo!ââ¬ï¿½ Lily shook her head. ââ¬ÅNo, you saw him, heard him after he passed. He was on his way to the ley line, to be reborn.ââ¬ï¿½
Ashleigh closed her eyes and let out an audible sound of relief. She thought of his voice whispering to her among the chaos of the fallen alphas. His soothing words and calming presence had pulled her back from a very dark place.
ââ¬ÅMy mother doesnââ¬â¢t consume the souls of others. They just fuel her magic, and she has had no part in it for as long as I have been dead.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅWhat do you mean?ââ¬ï¿½
Lily took a shaky breath.
ââ¬ÅMy mother died shortly after I did,ââ¬ï¿½ she said. ââ¬ÅI had felt the call the lines. But I chose to stay because I knew that she was dying. I wanted to wait for her. I saw her... briefly when she passed. I reached out my hand for her, but they pulled her back.ââ¬ï¿½
Lily had a sorrowful gaze as she spoke.
ââ¬ÅSolana, Talis, Lian... they made the shelter in the ley lines, keeping my motherââ¬â¢s soul tied to that life. She is gone, incapable of thought.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅThatââ¬â¢s horrifying....ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh whispered.
ââ¬ÅIt sounds worse than it is,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily replied. ââ¬ÅBut she doesnââ¬â¢t suffer or scream like the others. She is dormant within.ââ¬ï¿½
Ashleigh furrowed her brows. Looking up at Lily with concern.
ââ¬ÅWait... what do you mean ââ¬Ëscream like the others'?ââ¬ï¿½
Lily tilted her head and looked at Ashleigh with confusion.
ââ¬ÅThe wolves of Autumn and Spring,ââ¬ï¿½ she replied as though it answered the question.
ââ¬ÅI donââ¬â¢t understand,ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh said.
ââ¬ÅLian told you that Autumn had fallen,ââ¬ï¿½ Lily said. ââ¬ÅSpring has joined them. But they werenââ¬â¢t killed. They were changed.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅChanged?ââ¬ï¿½ Ashleigh asked, her eyes widening. ââ¬ÅYou mean, like, whatââ¬â¢s happening to Myka?ââ¬ï¿½
Lily nodded.
ââ¬ÅThe Dark Queen used your brotherââ¬â¢s blood to finish her foul experiments. She has turned the remaining wolves of Autumn and Spring into strange and disgusting beasts. They have the worst of the fae and no humanity left in them.ââ¬ï¿½
ââ¬ÅBut... you said the wolves, their souls are trapped inside?ââ¬ï¿½
Lily nodded again.
ââ¬ÅScreaming,ââ¬ï¿½ she repeated. ââ¬ÅThese creatures are crudely stitched together with scraps of the power from the ley lines. They do not hold a spark of life on their own. The wolf was killed, his soul trapped inside and used to fuel the body.ââ¬ï¿½
