Chapter 77 Beta Testing
Mated To An Enemy
Galen saw the danger in Calebâs eyes.
âYou donât know that, Caleb,â Galen countered quickly.
Caleb growled at him.
âCaleb, Caleb, listen. He might have realized it before he stabbed me, yes, but that doesnât mean he meant real harm. He was probably just scared. Iâm a pretty scary guy when I want to be.â
Caleb knew what Galen was doing. He was trying to keep the situation from escalating. Galen was right, but Caleb didnât have to like it.
âWhy are you willing to tell us this?â Caleb asked after taking a few calming breaths.
Peter looked up, seeing the suspicion in Calebâs eyes.
âHonestly, I donât really like Granger. Heâs a jerk when no one is looking and an outstanding actor when the right people are,â Peter shrugged,â besides, I like Bell.â
He smiled at Galen.
âSheâs a good friend, and this one made her smile in a way I have never seen before.â
Galen blushed and looked away, trying to hide his smile.
âI donât really care about the whole âgrudgeâ between our packs,â Peter said, turning back to Caleb. âI do my job, and I do it right. I try not to get involved in politics or drama in or out of the pack. But this much I can do.â
Caleb gave a nod of respect.
âNow, I have a more important question,â Peter said, changing the subject. âWhat the hell is this thing?â
With one final cut, a small grunt of pain from Galen, the metal disk was released from Galenâs flesh. Caleb leaned forward to get a better look at the device. He recognized it as one of the quick patches being developed back home as he looked closer.
Caleb sighed, giving Galen an irritated look.
âYou do understand that beta testing does not mean test on the Beta, right?â
âHar har,â Galen replied sarcastically. âI didnât do anything wrong; you test things all the time. Iâm doing my duty to the pack to further advance our medical technologies.â.
âThis is meant for healing?â Peter asked, turning the device in his gloved hands inspecting it with interest.
âItâs supposed to create a seal on an open wound, and then a small cartridge inside delivers a dose of general antibiotics and a boost to our natural healing process.â
âInteresting,â Peter said, setting it down on the table with his tools.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âRight? We wonât need a medic right on the battlefield with these. It gives us a safe window,â Galen said excitedly.
âOnly ifââ Caleb began.
âWhere is the other one?â Peter asked.
Galen furrowed his brows in confusion.
âWhat other one?â Galen asked.
Caleb laughed.
Peter looked back at Caleb, who crossed his arms with a broad grin and made a motion to suggest that Peter should continue speaking with Galen.
âThe other device,â Peter said, turning back to Galen. âDid you already remove the one on your back?â
âYea, Galen, did you remove the one on your back?â Caleb asked, still smiling.
âWhy would I have one on my back?â Galen asked.
Peterâs eyes widened. Caleb laughed.
âWhat?!â Galen shouted, annoyed that he didnât understand what they were saying.
âSit up,â Peter demanded.
Galen sat forward, hissing slightly at the movement. Peter stood up and moved around to Galenâs back.
âDamn it!â Peter shouted. âOff! Take it off now.â
Peter yanked at Galenâs shirt.
âOk, ok!â Galen said, hurrying to pull his arms out of the shirt.
Once he had his arms pulled out, Peter tugged it away from Galenâs body, throwing it down on the ground. Galen glanced down to see a bloodstain on the back.
âIdiot,â Caleb sighed from the spot he hadnât moved from. âHow bad is it?â
âDefinitely infected,â Peter said as he pressed on Galenâs lower back.
âAh!â Galen shouted as a sting of pain pulsed through his lower back, âwhat are you doing!â
âHey! Dumbass!â Caleb called Galenâs attention angrily. âNext time you test one of the devices from R&D, read ALL of the instructions. For example, the one that listed the actual type and size of the wound that could be treated by the patchwork system.â
Galenâs eyes widened.
Peter continued his exam, poking and prodding at the inflamed wound. Letting out curses and some commentary on Galenâs poor choices. Caleb joined in at those moments. After another ten minutes, Galen was lying on his side while the IV fluids flowed into his arm. Peter threw away his gloves and washed his hands before giving his official diagnosis and treatment plan.
âAlright, in the back, we definitely have some infected tissue. It wonât be hard to clear up. A round of antibiotics through the IV to start with. I will need to come back in a couple of hours and do a little bit of resection. So, I will need you to stay overnight.â
âSeriously?â Galen asked. âIs that really necessary?â
âWell, if you had stayed for an actual exam and treatment yesterday, I would say no, none of this is really necessary. Butâ¦â Peter replied with all the sarcasm.
âYea, ok. Got it,â Galen rolled his eyes.
âAs far as the front, itâs pretty much fine. However, I want to keep an eye on it through the evening. Just in case the damage from the device causes a secondary infection.â
âThank you,â Caleb said as Peter picked up his chart and moved towards the door.
âNo worries, just doing my job.â
âHey Peter,â Galen called to Peter.
âYea?â
âCould you,â Galen began, a blush spreading over him, âmaybe, let Bell know that Iâm here?â
Peter rolled his eyes before walking out of the room.
âWas that a no?â Galen asked quietly, staring at the door.
Galen turned back to Caleb, expecting to get another eye roll. But, instead, he found his alpha deep in thought. A look of concern on his face.
âHmm, broken beta, evil enemy, or melancholy mate? I will take a melancholy mate for five hundred!â Galen chuckled to himself.
âWorried about her?â Galen asked quietly.
Caleb lifted his eyes to Galen. He smirked.
âSometimes, I forget how well you know me.â
âBetter than yourself.â Galen smiled back.
âIâm sorry,â Caleb said.
âFor what?â
âThis,â Caleb gestured to Galen in the hospital bed. âYour injury, your fight with that moron. Itâs my fault.â
âUh, no,â Galen started, âthis is all mine. You get no credit for this chance encounter, my friend.â
âIf he didnât consider me his enemy, he never would have done this to you,â Caleb replied.
âI donât agree,â Galen stated firmly.
âGalenââ Caleb started, quickly interrupted by Galen.
âNo, Caleb, you donât understand,â Galen said seriously. âGranger isnât like most wolves. His jealousy is real, and he hates you, absolutely. But there is more to it. Heâs dangerous, Caleb.â
âWhat do you mean?â Caleb asked, standing up straight.
âI donât know exactly,â Galen replied
Galen thought back to the look on Grangerâs face when he was stabbed by him. The excitement, the laughter. The bloody smile.
âI win.â
The memory sent a chill through him.
âWhat arenât you telling me, Galen?â Caleb growled.
Galen looked at his friend. He saw the need to protect in his eyes. If he told him the truth about the moment he was stabbed, it would end badly for more than just Granger.
âDo you trust me?â Galen asked.
âOf course,â Caleb replied without hesitation.
âTrust that anything I am holding back is for the good of the many.â
Caleb let out a low growl and looked away.
âDonât pout.â
âIâm not.â
âMmhmm,â Galen laughed.
Caleb huffed.
âCome on, letâs talk about something else,â Galen said, âwhy did you arrive so early? I didnât expect you until tonight, at least.â
Caleb shifted uncomfortably.
âLetâs talk about something else,â he said, looking away from Galen.
âSo, you missed her.â Galen smiled to himself.
âThe bug reports finally came in.â
Galen was stunned by the sudden topic change. It had been almost three weeks since he had started the bug investigation. He had all but completely forgotten about the situation during his time here in Winter.
âAnd?â Galen asked, inching forward.
âThe results were⦠surprising,â Caleb said.
âHow?â
âThe results we got showed suspicious data packets sent in the form of mobile gaming information.â
âGaming?â Galen asked, his mind chasing through his memories, âAlice! I remember she was always playing games when she had her phone. So, it was her?â
âIt appeared that way.â Caleb nodded.
âWere we able to figure out what she was sending? And who was receiving it?â Galen asked.
âWe still donât know exactly what she sent,â Caleb said, âbut we were able to figure out who was receiving it.â
âOh? Who?â Galen asked excitedly.
âAnother representative,â Caleb stated, âone who received the data and then immediately turned around and sent it back out in a different hidden format.â
âWhat? How? Who?!â
âWell,â Caleb smiled, âdo you remember those pictures that our techs were getting tired of seeing?â
Galen furrowed his brows, then gasped when he understood.
âThat moronâs dick pics were holding secret files?!â
