Chapter 89 Awake is Better
Mated To An Enemy
Her eyes fluttered open drowsily as the sound of a bird outside the window stirred her from sleep. The speckled grey tiles that came into focus above reminded her that she was still in a hospital room.
Ashleigh sighed, bringing her arm up to rest on her forehead. She closed her eyes, wondering if it was possible to fall back asleep again.
Calebâs cold eyes flashed in her mind. She gasped and looked back around the room.
âAwake. Awake is better,â she thought to herself.
âHeyâ¦â a voice called from the door.
Ashleigh turned to see a smiling Bell entering the room.
âHey,â Ashleigh smiled back.
âHow are you doing?â Bell asked as she moved to stand beside the bed. Immediately checking Ashleighâs pulse.
âIâm ok. I guess,â Ashleigh sighed.
âYou guess?â Bell questioned, âwhatâs going on? Are you in pain anywhere?â
Ashleigh shook her head. Bell looked at the monitors, reviewing her stats to check for any problems.
âItâs just strange to be told your heart stopped,â Ashleigh stated.
Bell turned and looked at Ashleigh with a soft expression. She sat down at the end of her bed.
âI canât imagine,â Bell said, placing her hand on top of Ashleighâs.
âYou still donât know what happened?â Ashleigh asked.
âNo,â Bell shook her head, âI have tests running, but at this point, theyâre all guesses. You didnât happen to remember any allergies that we might not have known about, did you? Maybe I could narrow it down?â
âNo,â Ashleigh said, âthough Granger did take the flowers away. He said he was afraid it was his fault, that maybe I was allergic to one of them. Mother tried telling him they were fine, but he wanted to be sure.â.
Bell nodded, she had also considered that the flowers could be the cause, but it didnât make sense. She knew Ashleigh had never had a problem with flowers before.
âHe even came back later with a box of chocolates to make up for taking the flowers,â Ashleigh laughed. âHe sat there and watched me eat every one of them. He said he needed to know that I truly enjoyed them.â
Ashleigh was smiling. Her story was happy, yet, Bell could see that something was weighing her down.
âIs there something else you want to talk about?â Bell asked.
Ashleigh looked away.
âCan you tell me what happened?â Ashleigh asked quietly, ânot why, just⦠what you saw.â
Bell hesitated, she wasnât sure if giving Ashleigh the details was a good idea, but in the end, she knew it was Ashleighâs choice.
âIt was strange,â Bell said, âit was like your heart just stopped⦠Your breathing was strained, and it seemed like you had an allergic reaction. As to why we have been looking for an allergen of some sort. But your heart⦠it was like something just made it give up.â
Ashleigh felt a tightening in her gut as she remembered the pain of Caleb plunging the knife into her chest.
âAshâ¦â Bell called to her. âWhatâs wrong?â
âIâm fine,â Ashleigh said quietly, telling herself to calm down.
âThatâs not what the monitor says.â
Ashleigh turned to see Bell watching as the pulse rate grew higher and higher. She sighed and laid back in bed.
The door opened, a nurse poked her head in.
âItâs ok, Iâm with her. You donât need to monitor for now,â Bell said, waving the nurse back out of the room.
When the door closed, Bell turned back to Ashleigh.
âHelp me understand.â
âI donât know either. How could I?â Ashleigh replied.
âYou know something,â Bell stated frankly, âand Iâm not asking you as your friend, Ash. I need to know. As your doctor.â
Ashleigh sighed deeply.
âItâs nothing, really. It was just a bad dream.â
âYou had a bad dream last night?â Bell asked. âWhen your heart gave out?â
âYea.â
âSo, it was Granger⦠did he do something to you? Did he hurt you!?â Bell demanded, jumping up from the bed.
âNo!â Ashleigh shouted. âBesides, even if he did, it was just a dream.â
Bell sat back down.
âMaybe, but at the same time, itâs not.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, it was the full moon, and you were pretty bad off with the mating sickness. So, itâs not impossible that your âdreamâ could have manifested a physical problem for you,â Bell stated.
Ashleigh gave Bell a confused but concerned expression.
âLook, the bond isnât something we completely understand medically or scientifically. But just think of what happens when a mate dies. The one who lives feels it as if it were happening to them. Some of the survivors are left physically crippled by the event.â
âSo, you think my dream caused my heart to stop?â Ashleigh asked.
âThat depends on what you dreamt.â
Ashleigh looked away once more.
âIt wasnât Granger,â she sighed sadly.
âWhat do you mean?â Bell asked.
Taking a deep breath once more, Ashleigh decided.
âAlpha Caleb⦠is my mate,â she said quietly, âthe dreamâ¦.â
âWaitâ¦â Bell interrupted. She shook her head in confusion. âI donât understand⦠I thought maybe you and he⦠but⦠mate? What about Granger? I donâtâ¦.â
âYea,â Ashleigh replied, âhim too.â
âBoth of them?â
âYep.â
âWowâ¦â Bell sighed, then let out a small giggle. âRenee is going to be sooooo mad.â
Ashleigh couldnât help but laugh at the comment.
âYou canât tell her, though.â
âI know,â Bell smiled, âso⦠thatâs whatâs been going on.â
Ashleigh nodded.
âYou could have told me.â
âI didnât want to,â Ashleigh replied honestly, âI didnât even want to say it out loud to myself.â
âI think,â Bell said softly. Then, once again, took Ashleighâs hand in hers. âI can understand that.â
They sat quietly for a moment before Bell suddenly gasped.
âOh shit!â she said. âNo freaking wonder you ended up with mating sickness! Geez! With both of them here at the full moon! Youâre like a mate lightning rod!â
Ashleigh laughed again, so hard it hurt. But it felt good, needed even. So after a few more jokes at her expense, Ashleigh and Bell were left smiling at each other.
Bell tilted her head, giving Ashleigh a comforting look and squeezing her hand.
âWhat happened in the dream?â she asked.
Ashleigh swallowed hard as she felt the tingling in her face, the heat in her eyes, the weight in the pit of her stomach. Her throat tightened; she closed her eyes before the tears could blur her vision.
âHe killed me.â
Bell gasped.
Ashleigh nodded her head, her eyes still shut.
âHe shoved a hunting knife into my heart.â
Silence filled the room. Bell squeezed Ashleighâs hand once more.
âIt was just a nightmare.â
Ashleigh opened her eyes, turning to Bell.
âYou saidâ¦â Ashleigh began.
âI was wrong.â
Ashleigh didnât understand why Bell had changed her opinion. But she couldnât help but feel a sense of hope that she was right.
***
Bell had remained with Ashleigh for another twenty minutes, trying to ease her mind and lighten the mood. She had left when Ashleigh had started to drift back to sleep.
After making her rounds, Bell headed back to her office. She had been awake for almost twenty-four hours. One of the nurses had been thoughtful enough to make up a cot in her office. Now she finally felt comfortable enough with Ashleighâs progress to take advantage of that kindness.
She entered the room and immediately closed the door behind her.
âWhat happened to her?â a voice in the dark asked.
Bell felt a rush of fear throughout her entire body. She quickly reached out and turned on the light. Shocked to find Alpha Caleb sitting in the chair beside her bookcase.
âDamn it!â Bell cried out.
She reached a hand to her chest, where her heart was beating so forcefully it felt as though it would break through her ribcage.
âYou scared me!â she shouted.
âPlease,â he said. His voice was desperate. âWhat happened to Ashleigh?â
Bell looked up at him, viewing him carefully this time.
His eyes were red-rimmed, his skin was pale. Dark circles beneath his eyes.
âWhat happened to you?â she asked softly, taking a step towards him.
âIt happened last night.â A second voice said from behind her.
Bell jumped again, this time throwing herself against her desk. She looked up to see Galen leaning against the wall.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you people!â she screamed angrily.
