âWhy, am I not allowed to call my wife?â Charlesâs voice had a teasing edge, as if he was playfully
challenging her. âYou sound like youâre not exactly thrilled to hear from me.â
Noelle was at a loss for words for a moment. âYou canât even see my face, so how would you know
if Iâm thrilled or not? And about my toneâ¦â She sighed, a mix of exasperation and affection in her
voice. âLook, Iâm at work. Whatâs this really about?â
âSwamped, huh?â Charles juggled his phone in one hand and a pen in the other, signing off on a
stack of papers. His eyes flicked down, caught something that made him pause, and his mood
dropped. He shot a glare at his secretary. âGet the finance chief in here, now!â
Noelle heard that and said, âLooks like youâre the one whoâs tied up! If youâre too busy, Iâm just
gonna hang up!â
âWait!â Charles cut Noelle off, âHowâd you figure Iâm busy? Just give me a second!â Without waiting
for a reply, he slammed the phone down and drummed his fingers on the desk, fixing his gaze on
Joey, the secretary, âI brought you on board to lighten my load, not to make a mess. Whatâs the
deal with this?â
He jabbed a finger at the price on the document, âExplain this, now.â
âMr. Hoffman, Iâ¦â Joey stammered, his face going pale with shock. âI⦠Iâve got no clue!â
âNo clue? Youâre telling me a hotshot from Harvard canât make heads or tails of a simple report? Did
you just pass this mess to me to sign off on?â
Charlesâs voice was frosty, all business, âWhereâs the finance chief?â He hit the intercom, and
Ronald was in the room in no time. âOn their way.â Ronald caught a glimpse of Joey shaking like a
leaf and mentally paid his respects. âMr. Hoffman, what about this?â
âIf you canât even get a report right, I donât see why you should stick around.â
Charlesâs words were like a final verdict for Joeyâs future. To work at the secretaryâs office of the
Collosus Group was a dream job for many. Getting the boot from Collosus meant you were pretty
much done for in Brookville. Because no one would touch you with a tenâfoot pole since nobody
wanted to mess with the big dogs at Collosus.
Joey went white as a sheet and crumpled to the floor. âMr. Hoffman! Mr. Hoffman, youâve got to
believe me! Iâm innocent. It wasâ¦â
âWhat?â Charles looked up sharply. âOut with it!â
âThe finance department chief told me everything would be fine as long as my part went smoothly,
that youâd sign off without a hitch,â Joey spilled the beans, scared out of his wits. âYouâve never
checked the finance approvals yourself before, soâ¦â
âSo?â Charlesâs gaze was icy, a warning flashing in his eyes, âYou thought you could pull the wool
over my eyes? You know whatâs waiting for you outside Collosusâs doors.â
âMr. Hoffman, Iâm begging you, just give me one more shot, Iâ¦â
âRonald!â Charles didnât even need to finish; Ronald got the message. âRight away, Mr. Hoffman!â
He shot Joey a look. âOn your feet. Youâre coming with me.â
Charles drummed his fingers on the desk, lost in thought, before finally reaching for his phone. âAre

still there?â
âYeah,â Noelleâs voice trembled a bit, âRight here. Hey, your work was cut out for you. We could
catch up after you clock out!â
Charles let out a soft chuckle, his eyes twinkling with a playful glint. âDid I startle you?â
