Wife 86
The Cherished Wife
Chapter 86
âReally?â Charles stood abruptly, yanking a paper from the pile behind him. âI didnât come here to
listen to your excuses. You seem to be in the dark on how I operate. Since Iâve brought you in, itâs
clearâyouâre out of the Collosus Group.â
âMr. Hoffman!â Jensonâs legs turned to jelly, and he nearly dropped to his knees, âMr. Hoffman, I
admit it, I messed up! I was backed into a corner, you know? Iâve got my aging parents and my kids
to look after, and sure, being the finance chief sounds like a sweet gig, but⦠it takes guts to do this
job! I was desperate. My momâs sick in the hospital with heart disease, she needs a transplant, and
I was out of options.â
Charles gave Mr. Lowry an icy stare. âI gave you a chance to come clean, and you wasted it!â With
that, Charles hit the intercom button, and Ronald was in the room in a flash. âMr. Hoffman, Joeyâs
spilled the beans. A bunch of those phony accounts never reached you, so things were smooth
sailing until now.â
A smirk played on Charlesâs lips. âSo, youâve been pulling this off under the radar for quite a while,
huh?â
âMr. Hoffman, Iâm sorry!â Jenson hit the floor on his knees. âI lost my way, but, but it was all Mr.
Harrisâs idea. He told me that if I didnât participate, not only would my momâs treatment go south, but
Iâd be out of a job too. My hands were tied.â
Charles just waved him off. Ronald stepped right up next to Jenson. âMr. Hoffman, Iâve called the
cops, and they should be here any minute!â
Jensonâs world crumbled. His face was the color of concrete. âItâs all over! All of it!â
âNot yet,â Ronald chimed in. Jensonâs head shot up, hope flickering in his eyes. âYouâve got a
plan?â
Ronald squinted. âMr. Lowryâs a clever guy. Heâs gotta have a backup plan, right?â
âOf course, I do! Iâve always been worried that my secret would come out, soâ¦â Mr. Lowry wasnât
dumb, He had had an ace up his sleeve from the start, just in case his secret was revealed. âIf you
can forgive me, Iâm ready to give up what Iâve got!â
Charlesâs eyes were like icy daggers as he glared at Jenson. âI really hate being pushed into a
corner. Itâs a really bad feeling,â he said coldly. âToo bad for you that youâve just hit my biggest
nerve!â
âMr. Hoffmanâ¦â
âRonald, take him away. He needs some time to think about his next move.â
âRight away, Mr. Hoffman!â Ronald gave Jenson a sympathetic glance, shook his head, and tsked.
After years of working with Charles, Ronald knew exactly how he played the game. Charles was the
one who called the shots, not the other way around. He figured Jenson must have lost his marbles
to try and pull a fast one, âCome on, Mr. Lowry, letâs go.â
âNo, Iâm not going anywhere. Mr. Hoffman, Iâve got what youâve been after, the very thing that could
topple Mr. Harris. Are you sure you donât want to think it over?â
âYou are not the one setting the terms,â Charles said, his stare cold and merciless, as he took what
Jenson had. âI make the rules here!â
Jenson gazed at Charles, his eyes filled with despair.

Chapter 87
Ronald had just come back when he spotted Charles gazing out the towering window, lost in
thought. Clearing his throat to announce his presence, Ronald caught Charlesâs attention.
Charles shot a brief look at Ronald, who snapped to attention. âThe guyâs been taken care of, but
Mr. Hoffman, are we good to go with this?â
âWhy wouldnât we be?â Charles strolled over to his desk, picked up a cigarette, and rolled it between
his fingers without lighting it. âItâs high time we dealt with this. Letting it drag on isnât doing us any
favors.â
Charles was the kind of guy who liked to get things done in one fell swoop since it was less hassle
that way. âHeâs so fond of making moves, so letâs give him a grand one to think about.â
Ronald sensed that Charles was dead set on taking Robert down this time. Things seemed to be
moving faster than expected, and he could not quite catch Charlesâs drift. âYou said before that
youâd let him keep hopping around for a bit. I thought you werenât going to touch him just yet.â
Charlesâs lips curled into a sly smile. âIâm feeling good today. Donât bother trying to guess what Iâm
thinking.â
âI wouldnât dream of it!â Ronald knew better than to try and read Charlesâs mind. After all, figuring
out what Charles was planning was a puzzle no one could solve.
With a cold huff, Charles added, âJoseph thinks heâs invincible with Robert backing him up.
âAre you saying Mr. Hoffman wants us to move on Frotconn right now?â Ronald could not help but
think of Noelle again. He did not see what was so special about her, but Mr. Hoffman seemed to
have taken a liking to her.
Ronald was a bit puzzled. Charles had been known for doing whatever he wanted, and even though
he was caught up in the Hoffman family drama, his wild side was usually kept under wraps, except
for the occasional outburst. Was Noelle the reason this time?
If Ronald was being honest with himself, he was not too thrilled about it. In his eyes, Charles was
untouchable and almost flawless. Noelle, howeverâ¦
âHave you got something to say?â Charlesâs eyes narrowed with a hint of challenge.
âNo, sir!â Ronald was quick to deny it. âFrotconn has been pushing it, hiding behind the Collosus
Groupâs name for too long.â
âKeep an eye on Mr. Lowry, and as for Joeyâ¦â Charles paused. âYouâre on it,â
âUnderstood.â Ronald nodded. âAnd what about Mr. Harris?â
âWhy the hurry? Heâs the one who should be sweating it out,â Charles said with a dismissive snort.
âGive it three daysâheâll come crawling to us.â
After hanging up on Charles, Noelle felt a mix of frustration and resignation. She had never
expected Charles to call her during work to ask what she was having for lunch.
Noelle was not exactly comfortable with being a couple yet, but if Charles was all in on this lifeâ
together deal, she would get on board.
Charles had hit the nail on the head: she could not stay on memory lane forever or keep dodging
reality.

The best thing to do was to embrace reality. She owed it to herself to live a better life after all she
had been through.
Then Xavier showed up, and Noelleâs brows knitted in annoyance.
Xavier loomed next to her, his face all storm clouds and shadows, eyes drilling into her phone like
he wanted to laser through it. Noelle was not having any of it. She scowled and asked, âMr. Harris,
whatâs up? Do you need me for something?â
Xavier was not a fan of Noelleâs chilly vibe. âWho were you talking to just now?â
Noelleâs lips tightened. âWhy should I tell you?â
