Wife 97
The Cherished Wife
Chapter 97
Seanâs grin was disarmingly innocent as he adjusted his glasses, looking innocent.
Noelle forced a laugh, her nerves still jangled. The phrase âwolf in sheepâs clothingâ popped into her
head unbidden, and she could not help but think it was the perfect way to sum up Sean right then.
Charles squinted, a frosty glint in his eyes, âShowing up unannounced?â
âDonât tell me my Noelle isnât happy to see me.â Seanâs eyes landed on Noelle with a playful smirk.
âHmm?â
Noelle forced a laugh, âYou two chat. Iâll just be in the kitchen!â
Charles caught Noelleâs hand just in time. âYou okay? You look a bit shaken.â
Noelle gulped, shaking her head, âIâm fine, really. I just got a little spooked, but Iâm all good now!â
She wriggled her hand free from Charles. âYou can catch up with Sean, Iâll get started on dinner!â
Seeing Noelle practically bolt away as he opened his mouth to respond, Charles could not help but
let out a stifled laugh.
Sean, catching this rare sight, teased, âWhatâs this? Trying to be Mr. Nice Guy now?â
Charles shot him a daggered look that made Seanâs heart skip. Despite this, Sean just flashed an
award- winning grin. âCome on, bro, youâre not playing fair. Every man for himself!â
âReally?â Charles smirked, âShould I call her back, then?â
Seanâs smile vanished, âDude, are you messing with me?â
âWhat about you?â Charles was not in the mood to be friendly, âWhy did you even come here?â
âHave you forgotten? Itâs to celebrate your partnership with our new sisterâinâlaw. We planned a
brosâ get- together. Obviously, youâre not on board. The big guy and Peter are busy, so I figured I
would at least check in for them!â
Sean said with a straight face, nudging the dog beside him with his foot. âArnold, sit!â
Arnold, Seanâs unlikely companion, was a blackâfurred pooch with a striking streak down his back.
Whenever Charles shot him one of those piercing looks, Arnold would droop his head sadly and
snuggle up to Seanâs feet, looking guilty.
Sean gave Arnoldâs head a comforting pat. âYouâre sure about this?â he asked.
Charles shot Sean a skeptical look. âWeâve got the paperwork all sorted. Whatâs left to doubt?â He
let out a derisive snort. âSo, whatâs the real reason youâre here today?â
Sean gave a nonchalant shrug. âJust bored, thatâs all. You know how swamped Iâve been. And
Arnold canât stand the Smithsâ place!â
âYouâre thinking of dumping Arnold on me?â Charlesâs voice was icy. âYouâve seen it yourself. Noelle
canât stand the sight of him.â
At the mention of Noelle, Arnold perked up, his eyes wide and pleading. He let out a couple of sad
barks and shuffled over to Charles, nuzzling against his leg with his big head, trying to win him
over.
Charles would not have it. He nudged Arnold away without a glance. âWhy not leave him with
Peter?â

Sean massaged his temples in frustration. âYou think havenât thought of that? Peterâs only got eyes
for his own dogs. Arnold doesnât stand a chance thereâ¦â He sighed. âI wouldnât be here if I wasnât
desperate, Charles. Iâve got a conference out of town in a few days.â
Charles looked up, a frown creasing his forehead. âThe answerâs no, Sean. Noelle doesnât like
him.â
âNoelle hates everything.â Sean rolled his eyes at Charles with a look that could only be described
as pure scorn. âHonestly, I think itâs got nothing to do with our dear Noelle!â
