Chapter 56
Love The Game
Averys POV
When I pulled up to the baseball fields Lucas was waiting for me and he did not look happy. I mean I was like twenty minutes late.
"What the hell took you so long?" He asked throwing his baseball bag in my back seat.
"Hey calm down. I was at team dinner. Be happy I didn't make you walk home." I said sarcastically.
"Whatever. Whats for dinner?" He asked as he buckled his seat belt.
"We can pick up whatever you want. I'm not hungry." I said pulling out of the parking lot.
"Okay I want whataburger." He said in a little less pissed off tone.
"Okay." I said as I started driving that way.
"So how was team dinner?" He asked finally looking up from his phone.
"It was okay." I replied.
"How come Saras not with you? Didn't you pick her up this morning?" He asked as I pulled into the drive through line.
"She likes team dinners and I know she didn't want to leave so Kris said she'd take her home." I pulled up to the intercom and ordered his food.
"I thought Kris and Sara hated each other." He said giving me a look.
"They don't hate each other. They just uhh don't get along sometimes." I said starting to question whether or not I should have left them alone together.
"I'm sure it'll be fine." He said as I pulled up to the window to get his food.
After we got his food and went back home we grabbed our stuff out of my back seat and went inside. I pulled my phone out of my backpack and realized it was dead. I went to my room to put it to charge. As I did I could hear Lucas getting his stuff ready for a shower. I gathered my clothes together as fast as I could.
"I call dibs on showering first." I screamed as I ran to the bathroom. Lucas ran out of his room to meet me at the bathroom door, but I was already inside.
"Thats not fair." He said getting pissy.
"Should have called dibs." I shouted through the door after I closed it. I took off my practice jersey and sports bra and other pieces of clothing off and got in the shower. I was already almost out when I heard Lucas yell at me through the door.
"Hey someone keeps calling you." I just yelled back.
"Answer it. I'm already getting out." I turned the shower off and grabbed my towel. I quickly got dressed and got out of the shower. I walked into my room to see Lucas on my phone. The look on his face scared me.
"Whats going on? What happened?" I asked starting to panic. Lucas just shook his head and handed me the phone.
"Hello? Who is this?" I asked.
"Avery?" It was Kris she sounded funny.
"Kris? What happened are you okay? Wheres Sara?" I asked. I could feel my hands shaking.
"Kris I'm sorry. There was an accident. I'm at the hospital. I'm so sorry. It wasn't my fault Avery I'm so sorry." She said crying.
"Where's Sara?" I demanded. I looked at Lucas who still had that look on his face.
"She's here at the hospital. She's in surgery." At this I burst into tears
"Where are you? What hospital? Is her mom there?" I asked
"Yes she's here. We're at Memorial hospital. I'll send you my location." Kris said crying through the phone. I hung up started looking for my shoes.
"I have to go." I said to Lucas. Where the hell was my fucking shoe. God dammit.
"I'm coming with you." He said as I looked through my bag for the damn shoe.
"Fine just hurry up. We need to go." I said still looking.
"Where the fuck is my damn shoe." I screamed, with tears rolling down my face. Lucas just picked up the shoe that was next to my hamper and handed it to me. I got up put on a hoodie and ran out the door with Lucas behind me.
I drove as fast as I could. Lucas texted mom what had happened and where we were going. The drive there only took about 15 minutes but it felt like a lifetime. When we got there I parked the car and ran inside. I went up to the 6th floor like kris told me to do. I ran to the waiting room where I saw Kris, her parents and Saras mom and dad.As I walked in they all just looked at me. I could see puffiness under their eyes from where they had been crying. I must have looked like a mess because Mrs. Lots got up and walked over to hug me.
"Is she okay?" I cried into her shoulder.
"She has some internal bleeding, a shattered collar bone and a concussion and a couple broken ribs. They took her into surgery as soon as the ambulance got here. We've just been waiting for them to give us an update." I just nodded and turned to Kris who had her face in her hands. I sat down next to her and put my hand on her shoulder.
"I'm so sorry. That car, it ran the light. I didn't have time to do anything. It just came out of nowhere. I'm so sorry." She said with fresh tears running down her face. I could feel the tears running down mine. I leaned over and hugged her.
"I'm so sorry." She kept saying.
"Its not your fault." I cried. Lucas just sat in one of the chair next to us. It was already 12:47 when the doctor finally came in to tell us what was going on. He was an older man. Not too old but old enough. He looked like he should know what he was doing. He stood tall with his hands behind his back. He was very proper and official looking. Maybe he used to be in the military. He looked like he could have been.
"The surgery went well. We were able to stop the bleeding. As for her shoulder she has a shattered collar bone and a few fractures in her scapula, or shoulder blade. But with time and some physical therapy she'll be able to have full mobility with it. We moved her into a room. You're welcome to go in. She might be asleep still from the anesthetic but you're welcome to wait." He said.
We all got up and followed him to Saras room. As we walked down the hall of the hospital I couldn't help think of my dad. The last time I was in a hospital was when he was here. It was the worst day of my life. I couldn't lose Sara, not like this. God please. The doctor said she'd be fine but I was still scared. I was more than scared, I was terrified. Kris could tell. She grabbed my hand as we walked. As I looked at her saw for the first time that there was a bandage on her forehead with some dried blood on the side of her face. I was so wrapped up in my own head that I hadn't noticed it before.
"Hey are you okay?" I asked reaching up to touch her forehead.
"Yeah I'm okay. I just hit my head on the window, but the medics said it wasn't serious. Just a cut." She said touching the bandage.
When we walked into the room Sara was asleep on the bed. She wasn't moving, but she didn't have tubes coming out of her nose or mouth like I'd seen in tv so I guess that was a good thing right? She had bruises up and down her right arm and they had a block thing under her arm because of her collar bone. She had a couple stitches going through her eyebrow, that was going to leave a nasty scar. Her mom walked over to her with her dad in tow. She ran her hand over Saras cheek. I left Kris and Lucas at the door and walked over to the side of the bed. I looked at the love of my life lying there. I leaned over and kissed her forehead.
It was already 1 in the morning when my mom got to the hospital. What took her so long I don't know. When she got there she wanted to take me and Lucas home, but I refused to leave. Kris' parents had already taken her home. I sat in one of those uncomfortable chairs that they had in Saras room. Her parents had gone down to the cafeteria to get some coffee or something. I had my back against the arm rest and my feet were dangling off the other one. I was already falling asleep when I heard her start rustling. I jumped out of the chair and fumbled to the side of the bed.
"Avery?" She asked weakly.
"I'm here." I said wiping the sleep out of my eyes.
"What happened?" She asked looking down at her shoulder that was strapped to the block thing so that she wouldn't move it.
"You and Kris got in a car accident." I said pulling up a chair so I could sit next to her.
"Is Kris okay?" She asked quietly
"Yeah she's okay. The car hit on your side. She just has a couple bumps and bruises but she's okay." I said rubbing my thumb over the bandage on her eyebrow.
"Okay." She said as she softly placed her left hand on top of mine.
"You should get some sleep." I said softly
"Okay. But you should too." She said as she patted the bed space next to her. I got up and sat next to her. I didn't want to lay down I didn't want to move and hurt her, so I just sat there until she fell asleep. When she did I got off the bed and sat back in the chair next to her bed and fell asleep. She would be okay. She would be okay.
