Chapter 58

Love The Game

As soon as that buzzard rang so did the silence in my head. I turned to look back at the bench but instead I saw the entire team running at me. The first person to reach me was Kris because she was on the court. I honestly thought she was going to tackle me but instead she just screamed

"WE WON!!!" I just smiled. I felt like I was in a daze. The rest of the team plus most of the crowd were now on the court surrounding me and screaming. I waded through the crowd to find my mom and Lucas.

"DUDE THAT WAS AWESOME!" Lucas screamed at me over the noise of the crowd. My mom just hugged me and screamed

"That was awesome!" She was so cute. I just laughed.

"I have to go to the hospital." I screamed back. My mom and Lucas just gave me a little nod.

"I'll go sign you out." She said as she started wading through the crowd to find Braddock. When she did he gave her a questioning look but when he saw me he understood where I was going and let her sign me out so I could leave. I ran back to the locker room to grab my backpack. As I turned the corner to leave the gym I ran right into someone and ended up hitting my head on their shoulder.

"OH shit I'm sorry." I said as I looked up to see Mack standing in front of me rubbing her shoulder. She just looked me up and down. Her face wasn't stern like it usually was when she saw me.

"You played a great game." She said as she put her hand out. I took it and stood up.

"Thank you." I said. She just nodded and walked off. That was weird, but I didn't have time to dwell. I ran to the locker room. There was no one in there because everyone was still on the court celebrating. I walked to the cubby that my bag was in, and picked it up. I pulled my phone out and saw all the texts from Sara. She was texting in all caps and almost all of it was misspelled. I didn't read them right away, I'd rather get to her first. As I walked out of the locker room I looked at myself in the mirror that was along side the wall. I stopped for a second and looked at myself. This would be the last time I wore this jersey. I had on my lucky black headband that ties in the back. I looked down and saw that I was wearing my matching black socks with the red stripes, only difference from the last time I worse them was that now I have an ankle brace on. I looked back up at myself for a second before I walked out.

Since I had come on the bus mom and Lucas had to drive me back to the school to get my car, and even though it was only like a 10 minute drive it felt like a life time. I kept bouncing my leg up and down; I couldn't tell if it was from excitement or nervousness or just an anxiousness to get there. As soon as I was in my car I put it in drive and drove as fast as I could to the hospital. I ran through the parking lot and into the building. I ran past the lady at the desk who told me to stop running and straight into an elevator. I pushed the button for the 3rd floor and waited for the elevator to start moving. As soon as the doors opened I ran past another desk lady who told me to stop running and into Sara's room. I pushed the door open and sprinted in. As I walked in and looked around the room there was no one there. Sara wasn't in the bed and her parents weren't there, but I could tell that this was still Saras room because her basketball backpack was on one of the chair.

"Sara?" I called out. As I said it I heard a noise behind me. I turned around to see Sara coming out of the bathroom that was right next to the door I'd just come through. Sara was in her black Adidas joggers and one of my t-shirts I'd lent her that I never got back. She had on a brace on her right arm to keep her from moving it because of her collar bone.

"Avery? What're you doing here? You should be out celebrating with the team." She said just standing there looking at me.

"You're the only person I want to celebrate with." I smiled. I walked up to her and put both my hands on her face and pulled her towards me. I kissed her lips softly and she returned the kiss. I pulled back and looked at her. I kept looking at the brace on her arm. When I looked up I saw that the stitches in her left eyebrow weren't bandaged anymore and I could see the cut. I gently touched it with my thumb. As I looked at her I felt a tear fall down my face. She just looked at me with a somewhat sad smile and wiped the tear with her left had.

"Avery are you okay?" She asked with worry in her voice. I just nodded.

"Baby talk to me." She said hobbling back to the bed and patting it for me to sit down next to her.

"I just," I stared. "I was so scared. When I got that call, I thought I'd lost you."

"I'm right here Ave, and I'm okay. I promise." She said as her honey colored eyes looked straight into mine. I couldn't help but smile.

"Hey Sara." I said looking at her.

"Yes Ave?" She said with that little smirk I couldn't get enough of.

"We won." As I said this Sara just started laughing, and so did I.

"I know that babe. I saw the whole game." She said. We sat there on the bed and talked about the entire game, every detail, every shot, every mistake. I honestly think she had a written list somewhere of everything we did that was wrong and right. By the time I realized it, it was already 10:15, and I hadn't eaten since 11:30 that morning. The only reason I noticed I was even hungry was because my stomach started growling.

"You haven't eaten since this morning have you?" Sara asked giving me a disappointed look.

"You know me so well." I laughed. We were still sitting on the bed and Sara just crossed her arm over the brace trying to cross her arms.

"Ugh. Just go get my phone. I left it in the bathroom." She sighed. I didn't ask any questions, I got up and walked to the bathroom and grabbed her phone that was sitting on the counter. When I picked it up I saw a picture of us. We had been in the gym before a game and for some reason she wanted to see if she could carry me on her shoulders, so I got on. We were both laughing and it was just a really cute picture. I walked back to the bed and gave Sara her phone. She unlocked it and started calling someone.

"Who are you calling?" I asked confused. She just held the phone between her cheek and shoulder and put a finger over her mouth telling me to shut up, so I did.

"Hi yes could I order a large sausage pizza with crazy bread and a liter of coke." She said into the phone. I put my hands in the air as if I'd won the lottery and said yesssss. Sara just held the phone in between her shoulder again and flicks me on the forehead. After she hung up I said

"Babe this is why I love you." Sara just laughed.

"Mhm sure." She smirked. About 15 minutes later I had to go down stairs with Saras backpack and try and sneak the huge pizza box in. I put the bread and coke in the back pack and I wrapped the pizza box in a blanket that I had put in the backpack. When I got back Sara just laughed as I pulled all the food out of the bag and blanket. I sat on the bed again and we started eating.

"You get to go home in the morning right?" I asked stuffing a piece of pizza in my mouth.

"Yeah. They're going to do one final check up in the morning but after that they said I'll be good to go home." She said as she took a drink of the coke.

"Okay good." I said taking the drink out of her hand and drinking it. We ate and drank some more until it was 11 o'clock.

"Hey where are your parents?" I asked, just realizing that they weren't there.

"They had been here all day so I told them to go home and get some rest earlier, or at least something to eat. They're prolly at my aunts house. She doesn't live too far." She said taking her drink back.

"Oh okay. Well I'll stay until they get back." I said.

"Okay sounds good." She said leaning over to give me a kiss on the cheek. After we ate Sara flipped through the channels on the little tv that was in her room until she found a good movie to watch. I had no idea what she put on but she said it was a good movie. I was cuddled up on Saras left side because of the brace that was on her right arm. My head was on her chest and I could hear her heart beating, it was so calm and steady. We were only about 10 minutes into the movie when I felt as though I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. I fell asleep.

=======================

Sara's POV

I had only put the movie on about 10 minutes ago, but Avery was already totally passed out on me. She was still in her jersey from the game, and her hair was still in a pony tail with her favorite headband on. I liked holding her for a change. Usually she was always the one holding me, but I liked it this way. I traced little circles on her bare arm as she slept. I was starting to fall asleep myself when I heard Ave start talking.

"Sara...no...pass the ball..."

I started to laugh little. I have no idea what she was dreaming but I wasn't about to wake her up to ask. I grabbed her phone and unlocked it to tell her mom that she was still here and that she'd fallen asleep and that she was probably going to just stay the night with me. Her mom text back right away and said okay but that if I needed anything to let her know. I opened snapchat on her phone and took a couple of pictures. I only put the cute one on her story. I had just put her phone down when she started talking again

"I just miss you... come back...please." At this I looked down at her and wondered if I should wake her up this time. I was going to but she didn't say anything else, and I know she's exhausted from the game. I couldn't help but wonder what its was she was dreaming. She'd tell me what it was tomorrow if she remembered it. I just put the phone down and started watching the movie. It only took 15 minutes for me to fall asleep with Avery in my arms for a change.
