Chapter 60
Love The Game
As I walked to my car I was trying to wave down Sara who had been waiting in the bleachers. She was playing on her phone so she didn't see me. I walked to the side fence where we all kept our shit and grabbed my phone out of my track bag and called her.
"Hello?" She asked
"Hey babe you ready?" I asked. I could see her looking out at the field
"Yeah, where are you? Last time I saw you you looked like a dead body on the field." She asked laughing
"I'm by the fence. Look down." She stood up and looked at me. I tried to wave her right hand but with the brace it just kind of looked funny. I just laughed and through the phone she said
"Shut up." I hung up the phone and picked up my stuff and started to leave. I was already at the gate when I heard Kaylee calling me.
"Hey Avery wait." She said. I turned around to look at her. Kaylee was about the same height as me but she had really light brown kind of blondish hair that was naturally curly but like tight curls. Sara had loose curls. Kaylee also was naturally tan with green eyes. Its like she was always in the sun but it was just natural. I was kind of jealous.
"Oh hey what's up?" I asked watching Sara come down the bleachers.
"You're doing long jump right?" She asked putting her own track bag on her shoulder.
"Yeah I am why?" I asked now looking at Kaylee.
"Because Coach Z wanted me to tell you that tomorrow after practice and after we work on hand offs for the relay we're going to have to help out some of the freshman with their marks and the basics and stuff." She said taking her curls out of her pony tail.
"Thats going to take forever though." I whined adjusting my own pony tail.
"Only if you take forever with hand offs like last season." She joked. Last year had been my first time doing relays so I alway took forever to do my hand offs because the girl that was supposed to be handing off to me was too slow and I would take off too fast for her to catch me.
"We have a better team this year, I'll be fine." I smiled as I rolled my eyes. Around that time Sara finally got to us. I extended my hand for her to take.
"Kaylee you know my girlfriend Sara right?" I asked
"I don't think we've met. Hi I'm Kaylee." She said as she held out her hand.
"Hi I'm Sara. Nice to meet you." Sara said shaking her hand.
"I love your shirt." Kaylee said to Sara. I just rolled my eyes.
"Thank you." Sara said looking down at her shirt.
"I hope you don't mind me asking but what happened to your arm?" Kaylee asked. She was one of those people that could ask anyone anything and it not sound rude or like she was prying or anything.
"Oh I was in a car accident. But I'm okay. I'll be good to go in no time." Sara said enthusiastically as she still held my hand.
"Well that's good." Kaylee said, then looked at her phone. "Hey I have to go, pick up my sister from school. It was nice meeting you though Sara."
"Well she's nice." Sara said to me as we started walking towards my car.
"Yeah she's really cool." I said trying to get my keys out of my bag.
"She's really pretty too." Sara said out of nowhere.
"I mean I guess." I said still looking for them.
"Mhm." Sara hummed.
"What?" I asked finally finding my keys as we got to my car that was parked in the parking lot right next to the field.
"Nothing." She said. At this I looked up at her and gave her a look. I grabbed her belt loops and pulled her towards me.
"You jealous baby?" I asked as I leaned against my car with Sara leaning on me. Sara just looked to the left of me and said
"No." In a really unconvincing tone.
"You're stuck with me. No matter what." I said as I put a hand on her cheek and kissed her softly. After a second or two I heard someone say
"Get a room." I broke the kiss ready to fight someone when I saw Ollie. He just smiled and waved.
"Shut up." I smiled at him as he walked by to go to his car. He was probably going to see Kara, because if not he would have stopped and started talking to us for an hour.
"Come on lets go get a smoothie. Now that I'm not about to be sick I'm really hungry." I said as I gave her another kiss.
"Okay." She smiled. After we stopped at the little smoothie place Sara and I headed back to her place. As I drove I was holding Saras hand, but every time she wanted to change the song or text she would have to let go to do it. I really didn't mind but I think she thought I did.
"Just put your hand here." She said as she moved my hand down to her thigh annoyed.
"Babe are you okay?" I asked not moving my hand or complaining about it, but I could tell it was upsetting her.
"No this stupid brace is annoying. I can't move my arm and someone else had to write my notes for me all day and I can't even hold your hand because I can't use my right hand to use my phone because it hurts if I move it. I didn't even get to play in my last game of high school." She screamed, and from her voice I know she wanted to cry. All of this had just been building up. It had only been about a week that it had been on but I know she hated it. Even more so I know how much it killed her not to play. Before now she hadn't said anything so I didn't ask, but I knew it was bothering her.
"I'm sorry." I said quietly. At this Sara just looked at me and I could see the tears start falling down her face.
"If I had just taken you home, or made you come with me none of this would have happened. You would have played, and we would have won so much easier and you wouldn't have to be going through this. I'm sorry." I said, tears coming down my face too. Before I said it I never realized how much I blamed myself. But it was my fault.
"Its not your fault." She said I just kept looking at the road. I pulled my right hand up to the steering wheel. We were already at her house so I pulled in the drive way and parked, but I just kept looking straight ahead.
"Avery look at me." She said her voice cracking once or twice. I looked at her, right into her golden eyes. I looked up at her eyebrow and rubbed my thumb right on the edge of the forming scar.
"Its not your fault. And I don't blame you at all, I don't blame Kris either. Its no ones fault. It's just something that happened."She said still crying a bit.
"I'm supposed to make you feel better, not the other way around." I laughed and cried at the same time.
"You always take care of everyone else. You're even taking care of me now. So it's my job to take care of you." She said smiling. I leaned in and gave her a small kiss on the cheek.
"Lets go inside." She started "I wanna take a nap, and after that practice you could use one." With that I got out of the car and walked around to her side, and helped her out. Once out I grabbed her backpack and we headed inside. I watched her as she walked inside.
"Hey Sara..." I started
"Yeah Ave?" She answered back
"Your ass looks great in those jeans." I smiled as she gave me a little smirk and walked inside.
