Chapter 100 Chapter 100 +25 BONUS Their eyes locked for a second. Thalassa was the first to look away. Suddenly realizing that he was still holding her hand, she gently shifted it, prompting him to finally let go.
Clark cleared his throat. âIâm sorry for keeping you later than expected with this hospital trip. Iâll take you home immediately after this. As for the report, donât worry about it. Iâll personally take care of it. But before that, I really need to know, Lassa, who do you suspect sent that man to attack you?â
Thalassaâs expression darkened. âIâd rather not talk about.â
Clark let out a long sigh. âYou never want to talk about anything I ask about. You never even told me what happened between you and Kris to make you two get divorced.â
Clicking her tongue, she grew annoyed with his insistence and sneered, âDo you mean to tell me that you never bothered to look it up, even after I told you it was all over the news?â
âNo,â Clark shook his head. âI never looked it up because I was hoping that one day you would trust me enough to tell me about it. I wanted to hear it from you personally, not some article.â
The gentle need for understanding in his eyes cracked Thalassaâs resolve. âOkay. Iâll tell you.â
So she did.
âMy marriage to Kris wasnât a happy one.â
She narrated how he did his best to make her unhappy because he believed the lies of his mother and Karen; how his mother set her up for a crime she didnât commit, which finally caused their divorce; how she was attacked after leaving the house and lost her child in the process; and how sure she was that it was his mother who sent someone to attack her. 1 By the time she was done, Clarkâs mouth had dropped open in shock. âOh God. You went through all that? And Kris? Does he know the truth that it was his mom who framed you and also harmed your child?â
Thalassa felt a surge of bitterness as she scoffed. âTo him, his mother is nothing but an angel who can do no wrong. He refuses to believe me.â
âEven with evidence?â he asked.
âNo. So far, I havenât gotten any concrete evidence against her,â Thalassa admitted. âShe always made sure to leave no traces that would lead back to her or anything to implicate her.â
Clark nodded slowly. âI mean, I understand Kris. Itâs his mom, after all. I know my parents are dead, but if someone came to me accusing my mom of such vile things without evidence, I wouldnât believe it either.â
Thalassaâs expression hardened. âAre you going to defend him too?â
Clark quickly changed his tone. âNo, of course not. Kris is an idiot for believing those lies about you years ago and never doing enough to protect you.â
A thought struck him then. âDoes that mean you think itâs linda Miller who sent the man to attack you outside the restaurant?â
Thalassa nodded slowly. âIâm sure of it.â
Anger and disbelief flashed through Clarkâs eyes. âOh God, canât believe that woman is so vile. Hasnât she harmed you enough?â
âSheâs the devil herself,â Thalassa said, her voice frigid. âBut one way or another, sheâs not going to get away +25 BONUS Chapter 100 with everything, Clark.â
Clark suddenly took her hand again, causing her to tense up as he spoke. âAnd you can count on me. Weâll expose that woman.â
Thalassa forced a smile for his sake. âThank you.â
He was still holding her hand. This time, when she shifted her hand to give him the signal to let go, he continued holding on.
âNow I understand,â he said, his light brown eyes staring into hers.
She swallowed. âUnderstand what?â
âWhy you changed so much. You were so full of life before, so happy, but they took your smile away. Even now when you smile, it doesnât feel the same.â
Thalassa immediately got up to try and end that line of conversation. âPerhaps we should get going, Clark.â
She tried to free her hand again, but Clark didnât let go as he also stood up.
âI want to see that genuine, happy smile you used to have before, Lassa.â He closed the distance between them, his eyes moving to her lips and back to her eyes. âWill you give me a chance to try and bring that smile back to your face?â
His head drew ever closer, causing her breath to catch in her throat.
âClark...â she tried to speak, but he cut her off.
âPlease let me try, Lassa.â He whispered.
And without warning, his lips descended on hers.
