Chapter 58 After walking out of Kris’s office, Millie sat at her desk, feeling more anxious than she had in a long time. This was definitely not how she’d expected the day to go.

Yes, she knew that eventually, her relationship with Thalassa would have to come to light, but she’d hoped it would be after Kris finally realized the truth about his mother and his wife.

It suddenly occurred to her that she had to let Thalassa know. Picking up her phone, she dialed her friend’s number, anxiously tapping her finger on her lap as she waited for the call to be answered.

“Hey, Millie. Good to hear from you. How are you doing?” Thalassa spoke from the other end.

“Not fine. Thalassa, I’m in trouble.”

“Why? What happened?” Thalassa questioned, her voice filled with concern.

“He knows,” Millie said, lowering her voice to just a little over a whisper.

“Apparently, he and his family never told anyone that they were going to the charity function. I was the only one who heard them discussing it. When he confronted me about it, I didn’t know how to deny it.”

Looking back, she realized that she might have had some luck if she’d denied it, had she not been so nervous.

“Oh, Lassa, I’m so sorry.”

“No. You don’t have to be sorry for anything, Millie. It’s okay. We knew it would have to happen eventually. How did he react?”

“He looked... he looked so disappointed in me,” Millie lamented, feeling so guilty. “But that’s not all. I might’ve told him something you probably won’t like.”

“What did you tell him?”

“I told him that you and Zeke are not together and that you’ve never been lovers. I explained how you met him and why you lived with him for so long,” Millie quickly said.

“But Millie, why did you do that?”

“I’m sorry, it just came up in the conversation. When I realized that he thought you cheated on him with Zeke, I just had to clarify.

Besides, why did you even decide to lie to him about it?”

“I had my reasons,” Thalassa said with a sigh.

Suddenly, Millie heard the sound of Kris’s office door being clicked open, and she quickly brought her phone down so he wouldn’t see that she was on a call.

She braced herself, waiting for him to say the f–word, but he didn’t even spare her a glance. He just stormed by her table and headed to the elevator, a gloomy look on his face.

She brought the phone back to her ear. “He just left the office. I have a feeling that he’s coming to see you.

“Don’t worry, I will handle him,” Thalassa assured her. “But what about you? Did he say something about your job?”

“Wasn’t it his mother and Karen who did it?” Millie tried to reason. “Lassa, have you tried to investigate the embezzlement his mother accused you of? Perhaps you can find some evidence to prove that his mother made it all up and that you never stole any money from them.”

“Do you really think that’s not the first thing I had investigated?” Thalassa questioned with a bitter edge to her tone. “It was of no use. His mother planned everything so perfectly, like it was me who set up the account and had been embezzling the funds into it. There was no evidence to prove that it wasn’t me.”

Millie was confused. “Then why do you hate Kris so much when there was no evidence to prove your innocence?” “Because he didn’t even try to prove my innocence!” Thalassa hissed with a hint of annoyance in her voice. “Thalassa, it’s been three years.

How do you know that he never tried?” Millie asked.

Silence ensued on the other end before Thalassa spoke. “If you’re only going to defend him, then maybe we shouldn’t talk right now. I’ll see you later.”

With that, she ended the call. Millie sighed.
