“Kris, what took you so long? I was beginning to think you already left.” Concern filled her expression. “Is everything okay? Why do you have that look on your face?”

“It’s nothing,” Kris replied, not in the mood to elaborate.

“Can we go see Karen now? I need to be at the fashion house soon.” His mother asked.

Nodding, Kris approached the female officer at the front desk. “We’re here to see Karen Blade. She was brought in yesterday.”

The woman raised an eyebrow and turned her gaze to his mother. “Both of you?” 1 “Yes. Is there a problem? I know it’s allowed,” Kris pointed “Yes, it’s allowed, but...” The female officer trailed off, her words causing Linda’s heart to skip a beat. She hoped the woman wouldn’t reveal to Kris that she had already visited Karen.

“It’s just that...” The officer began saying again, then shrugged. “Sorry, you can both go ahead.”

Linda could barely hold back a sigh of relief as she wrapped her hand around Kris’s arm, and they headed toward Karen’s holding cell.

The moment Kris set eyes on the woman he detested more than anyone in the world, a fresh wave of fury surged through him as he remembered the discussion he’d had with Thalassa a few minutes ago.

Because of Karen, he had lost the woman he loved most and his child. For that, he despised her with every fibre in his body.

“Kris, you came to see me,” Karen breathed in relief. Then, glancing at Linda, she feigned surprise. “Linda...you... you’re here too. I thought you wouldn’t bother after everything I said about you.”

Shaking her head, Linda smiled warmly. “Don’t worry about it, Karen. I’m not going to pretend I wasn’t shocked or hurt by how you tried to implicate me, but I understand your desperation and why you did it.”

“Tha...Thank you,” Karen stuttered before turning back to Kris. “Kris, how’s our daughter? My dear Tessa. You don’t know how much I miss her. Please tell me you’re here to get me out because I can’t stand being away from her for another second.”

Kris was not fooled as he scoffed, “Our daughter is the last reason you want to get out of here, Karen. But even if that were true and you loved her as much as you claim, then you should agree it’s better for her not to grow up around someone as vile as you.”

Karen was pained, looking at him desperately. “I might have made some mistakes, but you know I love our daughter. I’m sure she misses me too. She’s asked about me, hasn’t she?”

Remembering the conversation he had with Tessa that morning, Kris couldn’t deny it. Karen saw her opportunity to convince him.

“Please, Kris. Let me go home to my daughter. You probably told her I was busy or something, but are you going to tell that lie to her forever?”

Kris remained unmoved by her manipulation. “I’ll figure out what to do in time. I only came here to tell you that now that Thalassa has officially filed charges against you, I’m going to ensure everything is processed as soon as possible. You’ll be transferred to prison in a few days to await trial.”

Please reconsider. Tessa deserves to grow with me because I’m her mother.”

Both Karen and Linda held their breaths anxiously as they waited for Kris’s response.
