“Divorce? Kris, you can’t divorce me,” she protested.

“Do you still doubt something even when you have evidence in your hand? Just sign the divorce papers, Karen. I can’t continue being married to a woman like you. This marriage shouldn’t have happened in the first place.”

She wasn’t the only one standing behind him. Linda and Tyler were also there. Karen felt bitter because Linda wasn’t even doing anything to change Kris’s mind.

Kris turned his glare back on Karen. “Throwing those papers away won’t change my mind. You and I are going to get divorced on those terms.”

Tears streamed down Karen’s face as she suddenly fell to her knees, gripping Kris’s leg. “Please, don’t kick me out, Kris. I beg you. Don’t separate me from my daughter.”

“Your actions caused this,” Kris spat, about to shove her off his leg when a sweet, tiny, and confused voice spoke.

“Daddy, why is Mommy crying?”

Kris spun around, his eyes narrowing at the nanny. He couldn’t control his voice as he spoke. “Boatemaa, I told you not to bring her down here and to keep her in her room! Why did you bring her here?”

Boatemaa quickly explained. “I’m sorry, Sir. I told your sister, but she still insisted on bringing the girl here.”

Kris’s dark look fell on his sister, Susan, who was standing beside the nanny. “What the hell is wrong with you? Take her back right now!”

He didn’t realize he’d spoken too harshly until his daughter flinched. “Daddy, why are you screaming?”

Kris dragged in a deep breath. “Sweetheart, I’m not screaming. Everything is fine. Please let Boatemaa take you to your room.”

“No!” Karen immediately rushed toward the little girl, engulfing her in a hug.

Tessa turned to look at him with wide eyes. “Daddy, why do you want to send Mommy away?”

Kris gritted his teeth. He couldn’t believe Karen was trying to use their daughter to spin things in her favor. How could Thalassa have even thought of dropping the charges against her? She was still as manipulative as ever.

Before he could speak, Karen spoke again. “Because Daddy doesn’t love me anymore. That’s why he wants to send me away.

But you don’t want that, right? Tell Daddy that you want to stay with Mommy.”

Tessa did exactly that, turning her saddened eyes toward Kris. “Daddy, don’t send Mommy away. I want to stay with Mommy.”

Linda finally stepped forward. “Kris, are you really sure you want to do this? Just look at your daughter. She’s about to cry. Don’t you think it would be too cruel of you to send Karen away? I know she has made a lot of mistakes, but she’s still the girl’s mother and she loves her.”

The more Karen cried, the more Tessa’s eyes brimmed with tears until she began crying too. “Please, Daddy. Don’t send Mommy away.”

Her tears were like several pins being poked into Kris’s skin until he couldn’t take it anymore. He would find another way. But for now, he couldn’t stand seeing his daughter cry. He immediately knelt in front of her.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart. Your mother is going to stay with you. I’m not going to send her away,” he said as he wiped the tears from her face while glaring at Karen out of the corner of his eye.

Kris was left dismayed, running a hand through his hair. Seeing the pleading look in her soft cyan eyes, he just couldn’t refuse.

“Yes, sweetie. I promise.”

A heartwarming smile beamed on the little girl’s face as she turned back to her mother. “See? Daddy won’t send you away.”

“Thank you, baby. You’re an angel,” Karen crooned, feeling immense relief.

Smiling tightly, Kris looked at the nanny and instructed, “Please take her back to her room, Boatemaa.”

Boatemaa did as told, carrying Tessa away. While they were gone, Kris turned his furious eyes on Karen.

“You can’t help manipulating everything, can you? You had to manipulate our daughter too.”

Karen pleaded. “Kris, you’ve got to understand. It was the only way I could ensure not to be separated-”

“Save your excuses,” Kris hissed, raising his hand to cut her off. Then he sneered. “I’m leaving this house.”

Karen’s eyes widened. “What? No! You don’t have to leave. Please, Kris. Let’s save our marriage for our daughter’s sake.”
