Dariusâ POV
I sat at the reception waiting for Azalea to come back with the other doctor, Doctor Halle since the second doctor had suddenly disappeared. It was a crazy moment, carrying Daisy from the woods to the hospital. I still couldnât believe I failed the girl Iâd promised to protect. I couldnât afford one more death in the hands of the Resistance.
No more.
Azalea appeared with Halle who apparently like twenty minutes ago was still in the packâs prison. Azalea walked up to me as soon as he sighted me.
âSheâs here, alpha,â
I turned to her. âThereâs an emergency you need to attend to. The nurses are trying their best but a more professional hand is needed,â
Halle went silent for a minute.
âIf Iâm doing this, then I need something in return,â
I took a deep breath. There was nothing more I hated than bargaining with a bloody criminal or a suspect. It usually puts me on the spot and makes me lose more than Iâd thought.
âWhat do you want?â
âPromise youâll give it. Give me your words,â
I gritted my teeth âI wonât give you my words. Iâm not stupid. Tell me what you want or donât. All I know is I need that girl treated NOW,â
âMy freedom. If I treat this emergency perfectly well, I want to be free,â
I frowned.
âThatâs a hard bargain, Doctor. Ask for something else,â
She shrugged as if she was nonchalant about whatever was to happen. âI have nothing else to ask for, Alpha. My freedom or I remain standing here while the patient dies,â
I squeezed my eyes shut as I tried to process my thoughts and what my answer would be. Azalea was trying to press through the mindâlink to say something to me but instead, I blocked him out. Iâd made a promise to my late wife to protect Daisy. Iâm a man of my word, I never go back.
âFine! You get to walk back home a free woman after you leave here,â she grinned widely while Azalea couldnât hide the surprise on her face. âBut listen, one more wrong move from you or if I finally find out you are a member of the Resistance, I wonât bother throwing you into the prison, Iâll cut off your head myself,â
The smile on her face was quickly replaced by fear and shock at my threat.
âUnderstood?â I growled.
Chapter 78
âYes, Alpha,â
âMake sure she doesnât die. If she does, youâre going back to the cell room. Best of luck,â
She walked away from me and dashed into the emergency room with the door closed behind her. I took a seat back while Azalea stood, still staring at me. I knew he had something to say from the way he kept on staring.
âSpeak your mind, Azalea,â
âAre you sure youâre making the right decision?â
I looked back at him with an eyebrow raised. âam I supposed to leave her to die?â
He shook his head. âNo, Alpha but Iâm sure the nurses are capable of treating her,â
âIt was a gunshot,â I reminded him. I donât know how capable the nurses were but I needed all hands on deck to save the poor girlâs life.
âDid you see the shooter?â
My shoulders became tensed. âNo. I was far away. Too far away from where she was to have seen the shooter. Have you heard back from the men who went to check out the cave?â
I asked him.
Right after I called out for help and they all came to the scene, I asked him to first send some men to check out the cave. Since Iâd shifted earlier when I was in the cave and was naked, Azalea gave me a shirt and a trouser.
âThey got back to me a few minutes ago. They didnât find anything there,â
I frowned but I wasnât shocked. âThey went as far as I instructed,â
âEven further than that, Alpha. They didnât find anything,â
âTheyâre so quick at cleaning up their evidence. Tell the warriors to go back in the morning to look for the tiniest evidence they could find. No crime spot can be thoroughly clean without any traces left behind,â
âYes, Alpha,â
I took a deep breath. The book Iâd picked up from the cave was safely tucked away behind my shirt. I couldnât wait to get home and go through the book.
I guess a lot of blood would soon be shed.
A few hours later, Halle walked out of the room. The surgery had been successful.
âI managed to remove the silver bullet from her wolf and she shifted back into her human form. Sheâs currently resting and should be better in a day or two. Hopefully, her wolf would help her heal better,â
I nodded repeatedly. âthank you. Youâre free to go,â
She smiled genuinely. âThanks Alpha. Although Iâd love to go home, I canât do that yet. I have to check up on some patients and also monitor her,â
She might be a criminal but she was diligent with her job and pretty smart at what she does.
âRemember my words, Dr Halle. Watch your back,â
She smiled again. âSince I didnât do anything wrong, Iâm not scared of anything, Alpha. Iâm only scared of dying

wrongfully,â
A part of me wanted to trust her but the other part of me which had experienced betrayal even from the closest of men decided it was stupid to believe her and that part was what I decided to do.
I walked into the room where Daisy was to check up on her. She was sleeping soundly with the machine beeping being the only noise that could be heard in the room.
The poor girl didnât deserve to be in such pain.
I walked out of her room and sat in the reception for hours. It wasnât until I looked out that I saw it was dawn already. Iâd stayed awake for hours without blinking. I checked in on Daisy to see she was still unconscious and decided it was time to go home to check on my girls.
The warrior guarding my house bowed as soon as he saw me and helped me unlock the door. I was exhausted and I needed some rest. I first went into my office and locked the book in my safe before heading to Angelaâs room.
âHey baby,â
I murmured as I snuggled into her.
âWhere youâve been?â She replied grudgingly.
âLong story but to cut it short, I went on a run and then Daisy got shot and Iâd been at the hospital. Sheâs stable now though,â
âOkay,â she replied. I knew a tough question was coming. âWhat were you doing with Daisy? Did you go on a run with her?â
âNo, she followed me into the woods,â
âHmmm,â she murmured.
âWhat?â
âYou left before I came out of the bathroom. I thought you were mad at me but I guess you were just spending the night with another woman,â
âI just told you I was at the hospital,â
âSame thing,â
She said with a playful smile. I didnât know when I laughed.
âGet some sleep, Darius. You need it,â
âIâm sorry I ran out. I needed to calm my wolf,â
âIf youâre sorry, let me attend the funeral,â
I became silent for a while. She wasnât going to let the matter go so I finally succumbed. âOkay, my Angel. You can do as you want,â
She k*ssed my hair. âThank you, Papi,â
âI love the sound of that,â I whispered.
As I snuggled into her arms and relaxed, I made up my mind to go with her. If I told her I would go with her, she

might have protested. Besides, I realized taking a break for a few days from the pack wouldnât be a bad idea.
At least, let that be the calm before the storm.
