Morning After Secrets

Caught Up in Between

Well, I guess the award for the luckiest girl in the world definitely wouldn’t be mine. I was in yesterday’s dress, with my underwear in my hands, and my hair was disheveled. The evidence was all on display for Kate.

“Did I wake you up?” I opened my door and took a step inside.

“Obviously,” she yawned.

“Sorry... I was feeling thirsty, so... I went downstairs to drink some water... You know, after this wine...”

“Yeah, the wine was good.”

“Yeah.”

The silence. I took another step inside. I hoped she wouldn’t ask any more questions, and I could close my door. She was still sleepy, so I hoped she’d be asleep as soon as her head landed on the pillow again.

“Did you fall asleep in your dress?” Kate, with her curiosity, would be the death of me.

“Apparently, yeah. Kate, listen, I hope to sleep a little more…”

“Where were you?” Now, she was standing with her hands on her hips.

“In the kitchen. I told you.” I wasn’t going to admit anything to her. I would hold onto my secret, no matter what. Nothing happened between Logan and me. The end.

“Bullshit. I know you, Becca…”

“Give me a break, Kate! I am tired of these suspicions... I said that I was in the kitchen and that’s it. See you in the morning.”

I barely restrained myself from slamming the door in her stunned face. But honestly, who did she think she was?

I stood in the middle of the room and considered what to do next. Should I take a shower, or would the best option be to try to sleep? I glanced at my phone, which I had left in the room. There was an unread message from an unknown number.

I recognized the number immediately. It was Drew’s. I didn’t have the energy to deal with it, not after Kate’s accusations. I checked the time, and it was 6:30 already. I sighed and plopped myself down on the bed.

I hoped to sleep at least two hours. As soon as I hid under the blanket, I fell asleep. When I was woken up by Lily’s cheerful voice, it was already eleven in the morning.

“Becca, are you planning to sleep till it's time to drive off?” She was sitting on my bed, smiling. Ugh, my head hurt.

“No,” I stood up from my bed, and I realized too quickly that I felt dizzy in an instant. I closed my eyes and counted to three before opening them.

“Are you okay?” Lily was worried. Just what I needed.

“Yeah, just... I will go shower, Lil. Is there any food left?”

“Of course. Mom saved you some snacks. And for Logan too. She went to wake him up. He watched soccer again, so he overslept, too.” I walked to the bathroom door, turned around, and looked at Lily. I needed some time alone.

“Lil, I’m going to shower. I need it to wake up properly.”

She nodded and stood up from my bed. When I undressed in the bathroom, I heard the door closing. I leaned my bare back on the shower door and sighed. Was I feeling guilty because of what I did with Logan?

Absolutely. Was I regretting it? No. These feelings gave me a headache. I needed to take a shower and go eat breakfast. That’s what I would do.

After the shower, I dressed in skinny jeans and a blue T-shirt, and did my hair in two Danish braids. I had to apply makeup to hide the dark circles under my eyes and my pale face.

When I looked at myself in the mirror, I looked cute, nothing special, but okay. I went down to the living room when it was almost 12:30. It was already near lunchtime.

“Good morning, sleepyhead!” Mr. Jones greeted me with a smile; he was sitting on the couch with a book in his hands.

“Good morning. I overslept, and we’re leaving today, and I think…”

“Don’t apologize, Rebecca. There is nothing wrong! When you are back from the lake, I hope you will have dinner with us before leaving.”

“With pleasure!” I smiled at him. He was really kind and considerate.

“Now, go! I am sure you're starving! I heard that Drew called, and he will be there soon to pick you all up.”

“Thank you!” I walked to the kitchen, and only then did I remember that I’d received a message from Drew and still hadn’t read it. Did I even want to know what was in there?

It was silent in the kitchen. Mrs. Jones, Logan, Lily, and Kate were here, but they weren’t talking, and fixed their attention on me when I entered.

“Look, who finally decided to join us!” Kate’s voice was full of sarcasm. I had a feeling that she would try to interrogate me about last night’s events.

“Kate, it’s okay. Some of us need more sleep than others. Especially after the excellent wine.” Mrs. Jones winked and smiled at me. “Come here, Rebecca. There is food for you.”

I came closer to the kitchen counter and sat between Kate and Lily. Unfortunately, that put me right in front of Logan. He was eating some cereal, and when I sat down, he looked at me and smiled.

I instantly relaxed and smiled back. I guess I was right when I thought that our relationship would be different. Strangely, the tension between us had disappeared.

I couldn’t say that I didn’t feel attracted to him; my connection to him was still there. It had just changed. Why didn’t we do the deed sooner?

Mrs. Jones placed a bowl of cereal and a plate with sandwiches in front of me, then she spun around, and the next thing I knew, a glass of orange juice appeared before my eyes.

I was very thankful to her, but at the same time, I felt guilty. I’d snuck to her son’s room and had sex with him, encouraged him to cheat on his girlfriend. Wow, when did I become so slutty?

Because this was precisely what I was.

“Earth to Becca! You need to eat! We will be leaving very soon. Did you pack your things?” Lily was eyeing me.

“Yeah, I packed everything.

“Thank you so much for the food, truly!” I smiled at Mrs. Jones and started eating. Afterward, we all went to our rooms. I took my bag and left my room.

I was the first downstairs and waited, standing there with my back leaning on the wall. Soon, I heard footsteps, and Logan appeared before me. Why did he need to be ready so fast?
