~Ember, I seriously think you lost your mind. We cannot get that girl fired! Overheard Birdie telling one of the department editors that, that GIRL YOU ARE TRYING TO GET FIRED WAS HAND PICKED BY EVAN TUCKER HIMSELF! Make her life here a living hell. I am all for it, but fired no thank you. Whatever you had planned to get her fired might put us in jail and I am way too fabulous to be seen in orangeâno thank you!~

CHASE
The guys and I are waiting in the administrative building.
I tried to reach out to my father about taking the internship position, but as usual, the dick he is told me the post is already taken and he doesnât need any more positions filled.
I knew he was going to pull some stunt like this.
âFuck!â I punch the wall, instantly regretting it.
âChase, calm down. There has to be another way,â Austin says, leaning against the wall. âThere is always another way.â
âPunching the wall isnât going to help.â Miguel is perched on the edge of one of the black couches.
Iâve been unsettled the most with him. Something doesnât feel right, and the way he keeps fidgeting is making my stomach turn.
I just keep thinking that I only told Miguel about the whole funding thing, and then boom, two weeks later, Charlotte is in fucking New York City.
âMy fiancée is stuck in New York with my father and brother, donât tell me shit.â I walk to him and he stands up.
âWhat the fuck is your problem?â he says, not backing down.
âCome on you two, enough. We are all mad Charles isnât here, but beating the shit out of each other isnât going to help. We need not do this here out of all places.â
Everett weasels his way in between the two of us. âNow cool the fuck out, both of you.â
âOne question, though. Miguel, did you tell Charles about the funding?â I look him directly in the eyes. I knew the signs to watch out for if he was lying.
We all know what signs to look for if one was lying. Living with each other for years, we picked up on a few things.
âIâm not going to do this with you, Chase.â He huffs walking away.
âWhoa, whoa, whoa there, answer the question.â Darren tries to stop him from walking out of the building, but Miguel pushes past him and walks out, and we are all right behind him. âMiguel, just answer the question.â
âYeah man, you are looking a bit suspect,â Vincent adds.
âBack the fuck off guys.â Miguel stops walking and turns around.
âDid you tell Charles?â Austin looks at him. I can hear the pleading in his voice. Austin knows how my father can be, and Jasper.
He has slept over numerous times at my house when we were younger. He has witnessed firsthand how things can go horribly wrong with my father and brother.
âFine, I told her!â he spat out.
I charged towards him, tackling him to the ground. All I see is red. He broke my trust with him and for what? We are landing punches back and forth.
Miguel is a fighter and there is a fifty/fifty chance he is going to beat my ass, but itâs definitely worth it. Charlotte means everything to me. The guys are pulling at us, but neither one of us wants to back down.
Weâre going blow for blow. His face connects with my face hard, and I know itâs over.
âGuys, chill the fuck out!â I see Darren hovering over me, extending his hand out. I take it, standing up, and see Tristan and Vincent holding back Miguel.
âWe canât do this here, or anywhere for that matter. This is not the fucking answer or way to get Charles back.â
âDarren is right, you two beating the shit out of each other is going to do what? Nothing,â Austin snaps.
âWe have Charles running around like she is some goddamn superhero and then you two jackasses. Does anyone else have something to say, do, or confess? Might as well add more people to the Dipshit List.â
He looks at each and every one of us. No one says anything, this is the first time any one of us has seen Austin go off.
His chest rises and falls dramatically, and he storms back into the building. It didnât take long for Everett to poke fun.
âDude, he just went baââ
âDonât do it.â Tristan walks past him shaking his head. âFor once just donât do it, Austin is right and we all know.â
âAlright fine,â he shrugs. âBut what superhero do you think Charles is?â he asks no one in particular.
âNot everything is a joke, you asshole.â I shrug Darren off of me and head for the building. I know he is just trying to cheer us up, but I will be happy when I have Charlotte back.
I can hear the guys behind me throwing around superhero names. I enter the building. Austin is pacing back and forth. He and I share the same fear.
âWhat if she gets caught?â Austin looks at me.
âShe is smart,â I assure him.
âBut your father and brother are smarter. Charlotte doesnât know what she got herself into.â
He is right, my family is the most conniving people you would ever come across. One of the many reasons why I want nothing to do with them at all.
My phone chimes and itâs not just any chime. Itâs Charlotte. I quickly pull it out of my pocket and open the text message.
Charlotte
Iâll call you later on tonight and explain everything. Please donât worry about me.
âFuck.â I quickly reply.
Chase
What the hell are you thinking?
Chase
Charlotte?!??
She doesnât reply, and I call her right away. It goes straight to voicemail. I feel useless at this point. Why is she so impossible? Shit!
âWhatâs going on?â Austin looks at me curiously.
âItâs Charlotte. She texts meâsaying not to worry about her. Now her phone is going straight to voicemail.â
The administrative assistant finally comes back to the front.
She exhales deeply and apologizes that Tucker & Michaels, Inc. doesnât have any more internships available, and she reached out to the company but was told everything was filled as of this morning.
I tried calling Charlotteâs phone again and got her voicemail.
âI know you donât want to call your father and see what he says. What do you have to lose at this moment? Charlotte is already there.â Austin relaxes his shoulders.
Heâs right.
âWeâve found Charlotteâs superhero name. But donât flip your shit.â Everett looks at me suspiciously.
âIâm not in the mood to fight.â I look over to Miguel and he slightly nods his head at me. âNo jokes, Everett.â I turn my attention back to him.
âCome on, please, let me just tell you.â The corners of his mouth turn up and I let him have a go at it.
âSo, you know how there is a She-Hulk? well Charlotte is She-Dumb. Her superpowers are making dumb choices, doing dumb shit, andâ¦â
I jump at him and he flinches. âPussy.â I smirk at him. The other guys laugh and poke fun at him and he tells them to shut the hell up. I tell the guys Iâll be right back. I have an important phone call to make.
I dial his number, and he picks up on the first ring.
âI knew it was going to be a matter of time before you called.â Hearing his voice makes my skin crawl, but I need to be in the vicinity of Charlotte, and if talking to this dickhead is what I have to do, then so be it.
