Chapter 9
Charlotte and the Seven Frat Brothers
CHARLOTTE
The bonfire isnât what I expected, which is a good and bad thing. I thought everyone would be chill, hanging around mini bonfire pits, but everyone was stripped down to their bikinis running into the ocean, splashing around.
Raven finds a spot to ditch her clothes, and she starts for the ocean. Taking off my boots, I sit next to her discarded clothes, scanning the crowd.
I see a bunch of people from my cooking class and some people I havenât met a day in my life. This would be a long night for sure. Digging into my satchel, I pull out a book, ~Eligible~ by Curtis Sittenfeld.
Every now and then, I glance up as people pass by. Really, Iâm hoping to catch one of the guys. I feel out of place here, but I also want to enjoy the bonfire thingy, too.
Raven officially ditched me thirty minutes ago when she came back for her clothes to hook up with some guy she met in the water. So, I bury myself in my book.
Reading word for word, chapter after chapter, before I know it, the sun is setting.
âCharles?â I look up to see Darren standing over me. âWhen did you get here?â
I look at my watch and groan. âAbout three hours ago, and you?â
âAbout the same time. Were you sitting here, reading the entire time?â He scratches the back of his neck.
âCome on, Charles, you have to have fun. This is senior year. You need to have fun and let loose. Did you do anything in college that is worth talking about years from now?â
I close my book and shake my head no. âI mean, going to college is a huge deal within itself so thatâs something to talk about, right?â
âYou arenât serious, you canât be serious.â He bends down to help me up. âWe are going to have fun tonight and nothing you say is going to change my mind. The guys are going to be thrilled to see you.â
Heâs already shoving my book into my satchel. âDid you come alone?â
âI was here with Raven, but she met someone.â I attempt to scan the beach for her. Itâs getting darker and more students have flooded the beach. There is no way I can find her now.
âYou know,â he throws my satchel over his shoulder and picks up my boots, âI donât really like Raven. She seems off to me, always has and always will.â
âHey, thatâs my best friend you are talking about, and you donât even know her.â
âTrust me. I know enough that she shouldnât be friends with someone as nice as you.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â I look at him confused.
âNothing. Letâs get going before the guys send out a search party for me.â
He walks off with my things and I stand frozen for a minute thinking about what he said. Raven has done nothing wrong so I honestly donât know where all of that is coming from.
âHey Charles, are you coming?â he looks back at me.
âYeah.â I jog to catch up with him. âYou donât have to carry my things, you know. I can do it myself.â I reach for my boots but he raises them above his head.
âWhat kind of gentleman would I be if I let you carry your own things?â He winks at me.
âAre you being nice to me so Iâll move back into the frat house?â
He coughs and shakes his head. âCan I not just be nice?â
âYou can.â I shrug my shoulders and fall into step with him. âI just thoughtâ¦â
âHas no one ever been nice to you before?â He looks over at me.
âOf course.â
âYour family and Raven donât count. So, has anyone outside of them done anything nice? Like a boyfriend?â
I donât know if I should tell him or not. I narrow my eyes at him. âDonât say anything, okay?â
âUmm, sure.â
âI never had a boyfriend before.â
He stops walking and looks dumbfounded. I stop short and look back at him. ~Please donât make this weird.~ I hope that is the message my face is giving off, but then again, I could look like Iâm in pain.
Either way, I should have never opened my big mouth. Darren is just staring at me, and I am getting more annoyed every second that passes by and he says nothing.
âD!â Tristan shouts heading our way. I shoot a quick glance at Darren, but he isnât staring at me anymore. I quickly tap him, and he looks over at me.
âDonât worry, I wonât say a thing.â
Tristan makes his way towards us, throwing his arm over my shoulder. âCharlotte, I am surprised to see you here. How do you like it so far?â
âItâs not really my thing, but I came with Raven, so here I am.â I shrug him off my shoulders. âI honestly think I should be going.â
âNo way,â they said in unison.
âThe night has just begun, and I know someone would be happy to see you,â Tristan says stingingly.
âCome on.â He grabs my hand and guides me over to a massive crowd. Well, not massive, maybe about twelve people. It was the guys and some cheerleaders Iâve seen around the campus before.
Tristan introduces me to the girls, and they obviously donât care who I am, but are pretending because Tristan and the other guys are there.
Typical cheerleader behavior, I wouldnât put it past them to be friendly with me all night just to get into good graces with the guys.
I watch Darren place my things near a pile of bags and footwear. I know exactly where my things are for when I make a great escape in the next thirty minutes.
I feel more uncomfortable around these cheerleaders than I did just coming to this bonfire. Vincent makes his way to me, shirtless, and I look away before he catches me checking out his Godlike abs.
âCharley, you look like you are ready to make a mad dash for the hills.â He stretches, and I take another peek at his body. My goodness, he must work out a lot. âUh, Charlotte?â
âI am so sorry,â I blush. âI didnât mean to look at youâI just thoughtâmaybeââ
âItâs okay, Charley,â he chuckles. âAt least I know you like what you see.â
I wish I could just teleport out of here. This is so embarrassing.
âSorry, I didnât mean to tease you. I can go put on a shirt if that makes you feel better.â
âNo, itâs okay. I am fine.â
The four cheerleaders Tristan introduced me to come walking up to us: Callie, Juliet, Makita, and Tessa.
Now that they are up close, I could have sworn the girl Callie was Doveâs friend, and here I am again, alone with Vincent.
âHey, Charlotte, we were just wondering if you want to take a swim with us.â Callie smiles her pearly whites at me.
âYeah, let us girls have a moment to catch up and the guys do whatever guys do.â Makita flips her straight black hair over behind her shoulder.
âSorry, I donât have a swimsuit.â I shrug my shoulders slightly.
âOh, no worries, I always carry extra with me. I think weâre about the same sizeâwell, your breasts are bigger, but that will make the bathing suit look even hotter on you.â
Tessa winks at me. She canât be serious, can she? I look over to Vincent, and he just shrugs his shoulders. What is with everyone shrugging their shoulders? Ugh.
âI donât think it is sanitary to share bikini bottoms. You girls should just go for a swim without me. I am leaving soon anyway.â
âNonsense. This bikini is new, come with me.â She grabs my wrist and pulls me with her up the hill to the parking lot. âYou are just going to love this one.â
There was nothing there. âWhat is this? Thatâs not a swimsuit.â The top for sure will look like nip covers and the bottom, well, it was practically a thong.
She tilts her head to the side and eyes me.
âLook, I am trying to help you out, because those girls down there are ready to tear you apart. Dove doesnât play when it comes to Vinny.
âCallie sent her a text saying you both were all googly-eyed with each other. She is on her way now.â
âWhat? I donât like Vincent in any way. He is a nice guy.â
âSheâll be here soon. Just steer clear of Vinny, okay?â
She pauses and waits for my response. I nod my head.
âGood, this is all I have thatâs never been worn. It may look whorish, but if you wear it right, youâll look like a heavenly vixen since itâs white and all.â She tosses it at me.
âI honestly canât wear this. I think Iâm going to leave for the night,â I tell her.
âNo, you are not. I also need you to do me one small favor, since I helped you out.â
âBut you didnât help me out.â I raise an eyebrow at her.
âI did.â She points at the swimsuit. âDove wants you to seduce Chase anââ
âWait? What? No way. He hates me.â My eyes widen.
âNo, he doesnât, and you know it. Seduce him tonight with that.â She points to the swimsuit again. âThatâs all you have to do, and leave the rest up to us. Maybe you can get a kiss out of it.â
âNo way.â I toss the swimsuit back at her.
âI donât want to be a part of something that could potentially hurt people. Whatever you girls have going on doesnât involve me. I barely know any of you, and I would like to keep it that way.â
She steps closer. âCharlotte, or as the entire campus knows you, Snow White, you have a major role in this.â
âHow?â
âYou are the closest to all the guys, especially Nataliaâs toy boy Chase. If you help us out with this little thing, Iâll let you know who the person is who will be submitting their application for RCA.â
This was news to me. âIâm the only applicant for that school.â
âNo sweetie, youâre not.â She fake pouts at me. âI overheard some girls talking about it two days ago. You help us, and Iâll help you. What do you say?â
No one has shown interest in the academy before. Iâve heard no one talk about it. All junior year I kept my ear to the ground when it came to RCA, and no one has spoken about it but me.
Everyone knew I was going for it, and some even told me I already got in because no one was a better cook than me in our year. This has to be a bluff.
âI donât believe you.â I look her straight in the eyes.
âFine, donât believe me, but when you get the news that someone submitted an application, donât come begging me to tell you who it is.â She turns her back, putting the swimsuit back in the trunk.
âHey whatâs taking you guys so long? Weâre ready to take a dip,â Callie yells walking up the hill. âDove is here already. She got here quicker than we thought and she is eager to meet Charlotte. Did you find the swimsuit?â
âActually, Charlotte isââ
âIs looking for a restroom to change into the swimsuit, and I donât know where one is, do you?â I cut Tessa off. I donât want to pass up on something that involved RCA. I can already feel the regret.
âYeah, just go to Royâs Diner, over there.â She points to a mom-and-pop diner across the street. âSee you girls down by the water in ten.â She smiles, turning back around.
âI see you had a change of heart.â Tessa gets the swimsuit back out. âCome on before all the girls come looking for us next.â She rolls her eyes.
âYou will tell me once everything is over, right?â
âYup once everything is ~done~.â She slams her trunk door closed.
