Six Days Later.

“Gosh, I can’t stop watching Cole interact with the twins. He is so sweet and patient with them. Debbie said, smiling from ear to ear as she made her way into the kitchen to join Hailey who was making dinner.

“Yeah. I think they have forgotten that I am their mom.”

“Are you jealous?”

“What? Me? No.” Hailey answered immediately. “I’m glad they are all having a swell time.”

“I won’t lie, it hurts a bit because I am used to having all of the attention. But I will be fine. I’ll get used to it. After all, there is nothing bad about sharing. The most important thing is that Ollie and Enzo are happy.”

Debbie nodded. “I hope you still aren’t doubting yourself if you made the right decision?”

Hailey shook her head. “There is no going back this time around. Cole is here and I think he is here to stay forever.

“The life of the kids I mean.”

“So you haven’t decided if you are going to give him a chance in your life?”

“I don’t remember telling you I was going to think about it.”

“Well, you need to hurry up. I need my goddaughter soon.”

“I feel so relieved that the hospital era is over,” Debbie mumbled, helping herself with some water while Hailey turned off the gas stove.

“Same here. I was so scared. Not even as scared as the way I was during labor.”

“But I am glad it’s now a thing of the past.”

“You’ve done so well, my love. I am proud of you.” Debbie stared at her best friend with so much admiration before gulping down the water she poured into the glass cup earlier.

“I should get going,” Debbie announced.

Hailey frowned. “You are kidding right?”

Debbie shook her head. “I wanna give you all some privacy. If I’m here, you and Cole will be so shy that you won’t be able to talk and reconcile.

“I made pasta. Your favorite.

“Sure, I will have them. I’ll take them home with me. You should seize this opportunity. Your first dinner as a family. You, Cole and the twins.”

“Why do you want me and Cole together so bad?”

Debbie shrugged, smiling. “Cos I believe in you both. Even if you can’t see it.”

“I don’t understand you anymore, Hailey mumbled.

“You don’t have to. I know you are going to thank me in the end. This is me giving you a chance to your sweetheart.”

“You are going to be disappointed. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Debbie rolled her eyes at her best friend. They talked some more after which she took her leave.

Hailes heaved a deep sigh the moment she shut the door. She just saw Debbie off and had started dreading the fact that she was the only adult here with Cole.

The last time Cole was here, Elma, the nanny was around. Elma was still on vacation and would be resuming in a few days. And just now, Debbie left her.

With slow steps, Hailey made her way to the living room and was greeted with sounds of laughter. Cole was tickling the twins.

Enzo saw his mom standing afar so he reached out to her. “Come join us, mommy.”

“Daddy, you need to tickle mommy too.”

Cole stopped tickling the twins and took a glance at Hailey who shook her head at him.

“Come on Daddy. Go tickle mommy.” Ollie pushed.

Cole obeyed. He rose to his feet and approached Hailey.

“No, no, no. Don’t you dare…. Hailey burst out into a peal of laughter. Cole placed Hailey on a nearby couch, he was on top of her, doing as the kids demanded.

Enzo and Ollie turned to each other, laughing.

“Stop Cole. Stop it. She laughed. Cole went on for a bit more before he eventually stopped. The duo got lost in the moment, staring at each other. It dawned on them that they never experienced this playful moment.

“Daddy likes mommy,” Ollie whispered to Enzo. To the little boys, it felt like a whisper but both adults heard them clearly.

“Do you think we will get a baby sister soon?” Enzo asked his brother.

The statement made Hailey snap out of her reality. She saw the confusion on Cole’s face and before he could say anything. She gestured for him to get off her which he did. Hailey got up, avoiding Cole’s eyes.

“It’s time for dinner.” She said to the twins who were seated on the other couch.

They both got down from the couch.

“Is Daddy going to join us?” Enzo asked.

“Sure, I mean if he wants to.”

“What’s for dinner, Mominy?”

“Pasta and Chicken.”

“Yum!” Enzo smiled.

go to the dining room, Daddy.” Ollie rushed to where Cole stood, holding one of his hands. “Mommy makes the best food in the world.” Cole smiled, nodding at his son.

It was then it hit him that he had been married to Hailey for three years but had no idea if she knew how to cook or how good her meals tasted.

Before Cole knew it, Enzo grabbed his other hand. Then the little boys ushered their father to the dining room.

They ate and once they were done, Cole helped in clearing the table.

He stood by and watched as Hailey arranged the dishes in the dishwasher.

“Thank you for the food.”

“You thanked me already.”

Hailey sighed, standing up. “Now you are making me awkward.”

“What?”

“Your compliments.”

“But I mean them.”

“I know you do. I’m just not used to hearing them from you.”

“I really treated you badly. Didn’t I?”

“It’s all in the past,” Hailey said, turning her glance away from him and wiping her hands with a towel.

“It is clear that you are still so hurt and you haven’t forgiven me.”

Hailey shook her head, looking into his eyes. “It doesn’t matter anymore. And I am not angry at you. It just feels weird. That’s it.”

Not believing her words. Cole reached for Hailey’s hand, pulled her closer to him and cornered her against the

counter.

“Cole, let go of me. She said, her heart beating really fast.

“What can I do to make it up to you so you can stop hating me.”

“Nothing. Just let go of me. I don’t want Ollie or Enzo to come and see us in this position. I know how important–it- is for you to be in their lives. But I don’t want to put their hopes up when it comes to us.”

“Why not? I want you. I want to be with you.”

Then Cole decided to confront her about what had been on his mind.

“Our kids want a baby sister?”

“What?” She feigned innocence.

“I saw your face earlier. You didn’t seem shocked. They told you before?”

“Kids say anything. Don’t think too deeply about it.”

“But I want it.”

“What?”

“I want to live with you forever. And I look forward to us making the twins‘ dream come to reality in the future.”
