ASHER
Much to my surprise, Silas didnât protest this time. He obediently nodded his head and after a long, lingering glance, the Beta retreated immediately. Iâd expected resistance, but then again, Silas likely didnât know how to deal with this situation. He was incredibly intelligent, but when it came to emotional hardships, he wasnât well-equipped.
Once he was gone. I gave Kane a cold glance and then a scoff.
âWhat do you have to say to me?â I wondered and I fought the urge to roll my eyes.
âWhatâs so important that you had to dismiss Silas?â
Though I knew it was cruel of me to think that way, Kaneâs weary face irritated me greatly. I knew I was being unreasonable and acting childishly, yet I couldnât control myself. The stakes were far too dire and I wasnât sure what was going on.
I lost my temper when Kane mentioned Cassandra. Was my stepbrother trying to remind me how useless I was at this point? I didnât understand his intentions, which only made my own emotional issues far worse.
Perhaps my anger came from immense jealousy. As much as I hated to admit it, in the past, I had been jealous of any man who seemed to know Cassandra better than me. Kane, Kaleb, Rayden⦠I had been extremely weary and jealous of all of them. They all acted as if they knew her better, as if they could see through her heart.
I felt exasperated. I could feel the anger in my heart contorting my face and b*dy, consuming what little tenderness and calmness I still had left in
If only Cassandra could see me now, I lamented bitterly, and I tried to summon the image of her lovely face in my mind. Her long, gorgeous hair, her full l*ps, her big emerald eyes⦠would such a stunning beauty still find me attractive? Or would she see a terrible monster before her? If I were to touch her, would she recoil? Would she find me the most despicable man alive?
âIf you want to stop me from going to the North, you should hold your breath,â I advised. âIâm not going to change my mind on the matter. As soon as I recover from my current condition, Iâm going to resume my journey-â
âI wonât stop you, Asher,â Kane cut me off with a soft sigh. âI know that trying to sway you in any direction other than your intended one is impossible. I just wanted to remind you that the stiffness of your b*dy might reoccur, and you might not be able to recover any time soon. The next time may be worse, and I donât want you to lose control of yourself.â
I wanted to say some kind of retort, but before I could, Kane suddenly changed his tone.
âI was jealous of you, Asher,â he admitted, and he took a seat on the chair near me. âI know thatâs probably not what you want to hear, but I canât keep it to myself. I was jealous of the fact that decided without

He released yet another sigh. âI donât know that I could have done the same if I were you. I would hesitate to things I was doing, like duty, responsibilities, and so on.â

My eyebrows creased together and I glared at him. âAre you trying to make fun of me?â
Kane shook his head immediately. âNo, thatâs not what Iâm saying. I mean⦠Iâm jealous that I could never love Cassandra the way you do.â
Anger swelled within me once again. The mere sound of her name from his mouth filled me with agitation.
âI thought that Cassandra would do the same for you as you would for her,â my stepbrother continued, and he golden hair away from his handsome face. âWhy would she agree to leave with Kaleb and go to Yurene? Was it out of

responsibility for Wegalla? If so, what motivated her to save our country, one that made her suffer so much? I guess I just donât understand this.â
His violet-blue eyes were distant and wistful as he mused.
âDonât speak like you can see through her,â I said spitefully as I shook my head.
He laughed. âI can see through both you and Cassandra even though you canât do the same. Love has blinded you both and makes you insecure and distrusting of one another. Your relationship is wrought with suffering.â
I fell silent and studied him for a moment. His tone had taken on a bitter edge, and I wasnât sure how to react. Had mine and Cassandraâs love truly grown bitter as heâd suggested? Or was he basing this theory on my current temperament?
âI can also see another reason why Cassandra decided to cooperate with Kaleb,â Kane continued on with a raised eyebrow, and then he gestured to my arms, which were covered by long sleeves. âAsher, did you get the disease when you were in Wild Crawler?â
I glanced down at my sleeves and heat spread to

cheeks.
âIâm not sure,â I admitted as I tried to recall the specific details of my illness. âIt was likely around that time, but I donât think Iâd taken water from the poisoned place. Cassandra has also speculated that my⦠diseaseâ¦. is different from the one that prevails in Wild Crawler.â
Kane nodded thoughtfully. âThis might be related to Yureneâs plan. If so, the sorceress would know something about it.â
âI donât know,â I said as my l*ps curled downward into a frown. âIf Kaleb wanted me dead, why would he have gone around somehow and used a chronic poison like the one within me? He could have just killed me and been done with it. I donât understand why two different poisons would have been used on me and those in Wild Crawler⦠but I suspect it was done by Oliver Moses.â
Kaneâs golden eyebrows shot up for a second. âIâm not sure if it was Oliver. Heâs conniving and devious, but I donât think he would have had an opportunity to poison you.â
As much as I didnât want to admit it, Kane was probably right. I had always been on guard with the entire Moses family. Though we were close due to my unfortunate marriage to Adalyn, I had made a clear point of keeping myself protected while in proximity to all of the Moses-save for Silas, of course.
âNo matter what the answers are⦠we seem to have an opportunity to question the sorceress,â Kane offered. âHopefully we can dig out some truths about Yurene and figure out whatâs truly going on here.â
Though his words sounded nice, I didnât think the mysterious magic-wielding woman would be that willing to share her plans.
âI thought she was unwilling to cooperate,â I said as I frowned.
âYes,â Kane replied, and then he smirked. âShe was at first. But something changed when you were unconscious, Asher. And we have made an interesting discovery.â
