Chapter 15
Comeback Of The Adored Heiress
Chapter 15:
Despair etched itself deeply across Fionaâs features as she faced the accusation. Having devoted years of service to the Johns family, whom she deeply cared for, she never imagined she might one day be cast aside as a thief. The world seemed to darken before her eyes.
Madisyn spoke up, her voice resonant with conviction. âFiona is innocent. I saw her walking out of the living room yesterday.â
Before Madisyn could continue, Kristine cut in sharply, âMadisyn, she might have taken it earlier. People like her will do anything for money. You shouldnât defend her.â
Lynda, her face tight with displeasure, was resolute. âJust take her away!â
Tears streaming, Fiona grasped at Madisynâs leg, her plea punctuated by sobs. âMiss, I swear on my lifeâI didnât take anything!â
Madisyn turned her gaze sharply toward Kristine. âYou claim she stole from you. Whereâs your proof?â
Kristine was taken aback by Madisynâs defense of a servant, her discomfort apparent. âThe necklace was found in her roomâwhat more proof do you need? Madisyn⦠Are you implying that I am falsely accusing her of stealing?â
As Kristine spoke, her eyes dropped, a show of wounded innocence that tugged at Lyndaâs sympathies. Kristineâs recent dance performance had endeared her further to Lynda.
Lyndaâs eyes narrowed as she addressed Madisyn. âKristine is your sister. Itâs unbecoming to challenge her over a maid!â
âOh? So we ignore potential wrongs because of family ties?â Madisyn countered sharply.
âYour sister is a kind person,â Lynda said, her frown deepening. âWeâve known each other for years. She wouldnât harm even an animal, much less falsely accuse someone.â
Kristineâs voice softened, tinged with regret. âAuntie, please, letâs not argue over this. Madisyn has endured enough already. No matter what she says about me, I wonât mind.â
Lyndaâs heart ached with empathy for her. âShe has endured hardships, true, but not at your hand,â Lynda consoled her before turning a stern gaze on Madisyn. âOur family creed champions unity and love. Your tone with Kristine was inappropriate. Apologize to her now!â
Elaine interjected, her brow furrowed, âLynda, Madisyn is simply being meticulous. She meant no harm.â
âBut all the evidence points one way, yet she challenged Kristine!â Lynda countered, visibly annoyed by Elaineâs spoiling. As she reflected on Kristineâs visible upset the previous night, her voice grew more emphatic. âElaine, Kristine is your daughter too. You mustnât show partiality just because Madisyn has returned. Didnât you promise to treat Kristine well when you adopted her?â
Lynda, aware of Elaineâs usually gentle demeanor, wondered if Madisyn had manipulated her somehow. Her gaze turned icy as she looked at Madisyn.
Elaine, clearly irritated, responded, âLynda, thatâs unfair. Kristine and Madisyn are both my children. How could I favor one over the other?â
âThen remove Fiona from the house,â Lynda declared with conviction, adamant about securing justice for Kristine.
Elaineâs frown deepened. âIf Fiona is truly innocent, doesnât this amount to defamation?â Madisyn posed the question indifferently, her gaze fixed on Kristine.
With lips pursed, Kristine responded firmly, âThe proof against Fiona seems irrefutable. If Fiona is innocent, I will relinquish all my jewelry to her and offer a personal apology. However, what if she did steal from me?â
âIn that case, Iâll apologize to you and give you all the clothes I purchased yesterday,â Madisyn declared plainly.
Kristineâs eyes briefly betrayed her joy before she sighed. âI wish it hadnât come to this, Madisyn. But if you insist, weâll proceed.â She appeared genuinely torn, struggling with the situation.
Madisyn, dismissing the performance, turned her attention to Fiona. âYou had no idea how the necklace got into your room, right?â
Through tears, Fiona said, âI swear, Iâve never laid eyes on it.â
âWhere is the necklace now?â Madisyn continued, her tone steady.
The butler stepped forward, offering the necklace wrapped in a handkerchief. After a close examination, Madisyn inquired, âAnd where exactly was this found?â
âIn the cabinet in her room,â replied the butler.
Watching quietly, Kristine was intrigued by how Madisyn planned to navigate this delicate situation.
âAlright, call the police,â Madisyn said.
The room fell into a shocked silence, and Madisyn added, âLetâs involve the police and check for fingerprints. If Fiona never touched the necklace, it wonât bear her fingerprints.â
Fionaâs face brightened with hope. âYes, yes, Iâve never touched it!â
Lynda frowned at the suggestion, skeptical, and Kristine countered, âThat doesnât necessarily mean she didnât steal it. She could have worn gloves.â
The possibility hung heavy in the air.
âWhen did you notice the necklace was missing?â Madisyn queried further.
âI saw it yesterday. I realized it was gone this morning,â Kristine answered.
Madisyn directed a maid to get the surveillance footage. The records showed Fiona had been to the second floor yesterday to clean Madisynâs room and had spent the remainder of her time in the living room. There seemed to be no opportunity for her to have committed the theft.
Yet, Kristine interjected softly, âShe didnât use the main stairs, but thereâs another seldom-used staircase she knows about. She could have used that to access the upper floors undetected. And with the living room camera broken, she could have used that staircase to carry out the theft.â
âI did no such thing! You have to believe me!â Fiona protested, tears streaming down her face. âMiss Kristine Johns, why are you accusing me of this?â
