Chapter 34
Comeback Of The Adored Heiress
Chapter 34:
âIâm sorry,â the person who bumped into Susan quickly apologized before moving on. Madisyn scowled, ready to confront the individual, but Susan pulled at her sleeve. âItâs okay. It was an accident,â Susan reassured her.
Madisyn decided not to pursue it further and returned to their table to enjoy the food. As they sat down, something caught her eyeâthere was a small object protruding from Susanâs pocket. She squinted. âWhatâs in your pocket?â
âNothing,â Susan responded, blinking in confusion.
But when Madisyn reached into the pocket, she pulled out a ring. Susanâs face turned pale. âThatâs not mine!â she exclaimed, panic creeping into her voice.
Madisyn quickly pocketed the ring, scanning the hall, her mind racing. âOf course, itâs not. Just wait here,â she said calmly before stepping away.
Moments later, a scream pierced the air. âMy ring is gone!â The voice was unmistakably Josieâs.
Josie appeared distressed, her voice trembling. âNo! That ring is a family heirloom from my grandmother!â
A murmur of concern swept through the room.
âThat ring is extremely valuable,â someone commented. âHow could it just vanish?â
âI took it off when I washed my hands in the restroom and forgot to put it back on. When I returned, it was gone!â Josie explained, her eyes filling with tears.
The guests began searching the area, but the ring was nowhere to be found. Josieâs gaze suddenly landed on Susan.
âEveryone here is affluent and respected. I canât imagine any of them stealing,â Josie said, her tone dripping with suspicion. âBut Madisynâs friend⦠she doesnât exactly look like she belongs here.â
All eyes turned toward Susan, scrutinizing her simple attire.
Susan, caught off guard by the accusation, stammered, âI didnât take it! I never even saw it!â
âI saw you go into the restroom,â one woman chimed in. âHow could you not have seen it? You must be lying!â
âPlease, just give back my ring!â Josieâs voice wavered as she moved closer to Susan. âIf you took anything else, Iâd forgive you for Madisynâs sake, but this ring belonged to my grandmother. I canât lose it!â
âI didnât take it!â Susan repeated, her face reddening with frustration.
Madisyn, her patience wearing thin, stepped forward. âDo you have any proof that she took it?â she asked coolly.
Josie looked affronted, her tone turning defensive. âSheâs the only one from an ordinary family here. Who else could it be? Itâs understandable that she might be tempted by something so valuable, but now that sheâs caught, she should return it. Donât worry, Madisyn, for your sake, I wonât press charges.â
Josieâs words effectively branded Susan a thief, and the other guests began murmuring amongst themselves.
âYes, sheâs the only one who couldâve done it.â
âI canât believe Miss Johnsâ friend would stoop to such a level.â
âPeople are judged by the company they keep. Was Miss Johns like this before?â
The crowdâs whispers were filled with disdain, casting doubt not just on Susan, but also on Madisynâs reputation. The admiration they had once shown Madisyn now soured, as some guests distanced themselves from her.
Kristine, ever the tactful one, stepped forward with a sympathetic smile. âMadisyn, I understand you want to protect your friend, but Josie is being gracious. Letâs have your friend return the ring. Now that youâre part of the Johns family, you can help her avoid such behavior in the future.â
Susan, on the verge of tears, cried, âJust because Iâm not dressed like the rest of you doesnât mean Iâm a thief!â
Kristine sighed softly, as though torn. âPerhaps we should handle this after the banquet?â she suggested.
Josie hesitated but eventually nodded. âAlright,â she agreed reluctantly.
The guests watched the exchange, praising Kristine for her sensitivity. âKristine is always so considerate,â one whispered. âSheâs trying to spare Madisyn from further embarrassment.â
âKristineâs upbringing is shining through,â another added. âShe clearly knows how to handle situations with grace.â
Madisyn rolled her eyes inwardly. Kristineâs manipulation was all too transparent, yet it was workingâeveryone was now convinced Susan had stolen the ring.
Glenn, noticing the growing disturbance, approached to see what was going on. Kristine was quick to explain the situation, painting Susan as a suspect.
âKristine,â Madisyn said sharply, âwhy are you so eager to accuse my friend of theft?â
Kristine appeared flustered. âMadisyn, please donât misunderstand me. Iâm just trying to keep the peace. Letâs address this after the banquet so we donât disrupt your celebration.â
âIâm telling you, she didnât take Josieâs ring!â Madisyn insisted, her eyes narrowing.
Josie, growing frustrated with Madisynâs defense of Susan, stepped forward. âFine,â she snapped, âletâs search her. If we donât find the ring, Iâll apologize. But if we do, Iâll involve the police!â
The tension in the room thickened as all eyes turned to Susan, waiting for the truth to unfold.
