The Reluctant Mate
Porter
A busy month passed with the pack. Randy ditched us to go off to Lightwood to try to convince his stubborn mate to accept him. I would have sympathized, but helping cover the deltaâs work on top of my own cut into my already limited time to spend with my own mate. I still saw Amanda as much as I could. We went out on dates like any regular couple and it was nice. We were taking things slow and we seemed to be getting closer.
My wolf was going mental.
I ignored that side of me as much as possible. Tonight she was coming out to visit for the first time since Carrie had released her, and I was nervous. It felt like a lot more was riding on my cooking performance than just this night. Maybe it was in my imagination. I read through the recipe for the fifth time to make sure I hadnât missed any critical step. It wasnât supposed to be this hard.
Kain was watching over my shoulder being a general pain in the ass. âSure you should do that?â he asked.
âYes. And go clean up your mess. Amanda will be here soon.â
âWhy? If I do, she wonât have anything to throw at you, Porter,â the cocky little punk responded innocently. He was like the younger brother I had never asked for.
âYouâre doing extra laps tomorrow if you donât knock it off, kid.â
Kain leaned against the fridge. âGo ahead. Iâll tell Jason youâre abusing your power to pick on me.â
âIâll tell him that youâre beingââ
I was interrupted by a knock on the door.
âOoh, is she early?â Kain asked, finding humour in my suffering. He sauntered over into the living room.
I wasnât ready, and I rushed to the door and pulled it open. I knew it was her even before I opened it because I could smell her intriguing scent. âAmanda.â
âHey, Porter, smells good in here.â
I could say the same. âHi Amanda!â Kain said from where he was stuffing all his stuff into his backpack, being way too friendly to my mate, probably to annoy me again.
âHey Kain,â she said, smiling at him.
I frowned. It almost seemed she liked him better than me. âIâm just finishing up here, if you want to get comfortable.â
She nodded and leaned against the back of the couch and watched me.
âWant something to drink? Iâll grab you something before I go,â Kain offered. He was never so friendly to anyone. It was suspicious.
âAre you getting kicked out again because Iâm here?â she asked. âYou could eat with us, too.â
I paused for a moment in dumbfounded horror. Kain smiled at me evilly, before turning and looking back in her direction. âNo thanks, Amanda. Jason owes me some junk food and game time and Iâm collecting tonight.â Then he looked back at me with a smirk. âNow you owe me. Or maybe itâs your turn to run extra laps.â
âKain...â
âSee you later, Amanda,â he said as he pushed outside.
âHeâs such a cute kid,â Amanda commented after the door shut.
âMaybe if evil incarnate is cute.â
She rolled her eyes at me playfully. âDonât be so mean to him.â
âIâm not mean. I canât believe youâre taking the kidâs side over mine.â
âOf course I am. Heâs a kid, you can take care of yourself.â
I stirred the sauce I was hoping was turning out alright. âHe did have one point. Want something to drink?â
âPlease.â
âWhat do you want?â
âSomething harder than water and softer than fairy juice.â
âGood, because Iâm never letting you at the FJ again.â
She made a dismissive sound. âIâm not letting me at that again, itâs got nothing to do with you.â
âFair enough. Thereâs wine, or beer if youâd prefer?â
âThatâs fine. Iâll help myself.â She leaned down into the fridge and I watched her ass from the corner of my eye. âWhich one do you want? Maybe wine would go better with what youâre making.â
I didnât hear the question. âWhat?â Shit Porter, stop getting sidetracked by her body.
She looked over her shoulder at me. âBeer? Or wine?â
âYou pick.â
âFine, wine it is.â She closed the fridge and went and grabbed some glasses. She clearly remembered where everything was from searching for artillery and she opened the bottle and poured a glass for each of us. She put mine next to me on the counter and leaned back, swirling the liquid in her glass. âYou know, you look pretty good cooking like this.â
âOh yeah?â I wasnât going to argue if thatâs what she thought.
âYeah. In my objective opinion. Maybe I came early to see what youâd be doing before I got here.â
âAh, so it was on purpose.â
âAre you complaining? I was ready early and decided to surprise you. Surprise.â
âNo complaints here. You look pretty good watching me cook like this.â
âGood answer.â
âWell, itâs true.â She just smiled and met my eyes while she sipped her wine. âShould I set the table?â
âIf you want.â The plan was to have all that ready ahead before she got there, but sheâd changed that up with her early arrival.
Amanda dug through the drawers and made short work of putting out place settings. âSorry I smashed so much. Well, I mean, at the time it was one hundred percent justified, but still.â
I chuckled. âIt seemed a fair trade for confining you.â
âI hope I didnât break any of Kainâs stuff.â
âYou didnât. You got Maxâs favourite mug though.â
âWell, I feel bad about Max now.â
âHeâll live.â
âDid I break anything you care about?â
I served the food onto the plates and we went to the table. âNothing that isnât yours to break.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
I shrugged. âEverything that I have is yours if you want it.â
âNice line.â
âItâs not a line. Iâm serious. And you know that.â
She exhaled slowly. âYeah.â
We ate in silence for a minute, while I wondered if Iâd been too intense before she broke it. âThis is really good.â
âThanks. I just followed the directions.â Would have been nice if my mate had come with directions.
