Chapter 29
Alessio
"Leo, are you sure about this? If what you're saying is true, then that means-"
"I found him? My team is superior in every way, and I needed to help my quitting subordinate find someone I specifically asked him to find?"
Usually, I would have a snide remark, but now I have nothing-nothing but complete relief that this bastard is going to die and I can start my simple life. "Send me the location," I command.
Leo clicks one keyboard and on my laptop is an address with a check-out time of precisely three hours. "You have three hours before he changes location again. You're welcome, Alessio, and make sure I get a dinner invite every once in a while." Leo ends the call, and I'm on to my next phone call. I take off my tie, then the button-down exchanging my blazer for a black long sleeve thermal shirt.
"Tara," I shout into the phone, strapping pistols to my waist. "Leo found Patrick Kinsman. I need you to gather all the competent agents in New York and meet me here. The son of a bitch is less than five minutes away from the office."
He was right under my nose the entire time. No wonder I wasn't able to find him. The best place to hide from the enemy is as close as possible. I would have never thought he was this close. I run a hand through my hair, checking my bullets-making sure that each gun strapped to my body is fully equipped to kill the son of a bitch.
"Are you shitting me?" Tara starts. I hear rustling in the background. "Only five minutes? That bastard is a genius. I'll call everyone, I can, and we'll be there soon. Send me the address," she runs off.
I rush to my computer and forward the email to Tara. "You get it?"
"Yeah...I got it, alright. Gather everyone in the office-I'll handle the rest. Let's say this is my impromptu training."
"Don't fail me," I command.
"You're leaving your work to me. I would never fail you, friend." With that, she hangs up the phone, and I'm rushing into the open office space.
"Everyone!" I boom through the office, silence befalling the moment my last syllable falls to their ears. They all meet my gaze, taking in my guns, my tousled hair, and the way I can't stop shaking my leg. I look to my now thirty agents and smile or my version of one for them.
And they look at me like I've grown two heads. If this was any other occasion, I will admit a scowl would be on my face, but I'm happy, hell-elated, fucking ecstatic. "We found Patrick Kinsman in twenty-two minutes. I want everyone prepared to leave-guns ready. This is my last mission, everyone. Do not disappoint me, and do not disappoint your future boss Tara with your intolerance."
There still, my eyebrow twitches, and then I snap. "Now!" And everyone in the room rustles to the armory and is changing out of their suits and more formal wear for something black and ready to kill in.
I leave for my office, scouring the streets for any and all angles, exit points, and rooftops for any sniper to take him out. I'll have men at the corner of every street within a ten-mile radius and camp out all the private hangers to shoot down any plane that he manages to get on if and only if he manages to weasel out of my grasp as I put a bullet through his head.
My phone rings-Aria.
"Hello," I say.
"Hey, are you busy?" Aria asks.
"A little bit," I grab a knife strapping it into my ankle. "What's up?"
"I was wondering if I could go over to a friend's house tonight-stay the night. We wanted to marathon the Twilight movies because I have never seen them and-"
"Sure thing. Just text Alice and me when you get there."
"Okay, but talking about Alice. Have you heard from her? I haven't talked to her in hours, and she said she was going to the store, but that was so long ago."
"Did you call her?"
"Yeah, like ten times." I raise a brow. This isn't usual for her. Alice always answers her phone, and on the rare occasion she doesn't, she calls back in less than ten minutes. "I'm a bit worried about her. Can you give her a call? I'm packing my bags and heading out."
"Sure, thing, and I'll tell her to give you a call. Have fun with your friends tonight, Aria."
"Can I order some pizza?"
"Sure, I'll send the money over in a few moments."
"Thanks, Alessio," she says before hanging up, and I'm on my way to calling Alice.
Nothing
Another call
Nothing, again.
So very unlike her. I checked over our messages. Three hours ago, she said she was going to the store to pick up things for dinner and get Aria some stuff while she was there. I click onto my computer, checking the security cameras. Alice is not there. She left hours ago, just as Aria said.
I drum my fingers against the desk. Calm down. She probably stopped somewhere, maybe went shopping, and her phone died. Nothing is going on out of the blue-she is okay. Alice is fine, everything is fine and will be wrapped in a neat bow tonight, and this life will be behind us-a wild fever dream, a martial bump that we've ridden over and uphill from here.
I stand up from the desk and walk away from the computer.
Alice is not alright
Just check the cameras.
She only goes to one grocery store.
This is your goddamn wife-check the cameras!
I turn around and access the city cameras, particularly the grocery stores. It would be ten minutes after she left-thirteen really. I speed through the camera and I see her arrive. Good, she went there but what did she do after she came out. I speed through the camera, for forty-four minutes she's in the store. She puts everything in the backseat and sits in her car.
And not one minute later, her window is burst open, and my wife is being carried off into a van.
Alice! Fuck!
"Odella!" I shout, without a second thought.
She rushes in, "Sir, is everything alright-"
"Alice!" Someone kidnapped her, someone took her and hit her and hurt my wife! I pace the room, Odella follows my trail. Who took her? Where the hell is she? I rush to the computer, two hours ago. Two hours she has been missing. In two hours so much could have been done.
She could have been beaten, thrown into a lion's den, or worse...no. She is alright, she has to be alright. I won't think of something so...no! I won't even utter or even think of something so morbid. I rake my hand through my hair.
Alice, whoever touched her is gonna have death so fucking gruesome. I will burn them alive.
"Sir...Alice," Odella touches my arm and I flinch away. "What happened?"
"Alice...she's," it hurts to talk. "Alice she has been kidnapped."
"Sir!" I point to the computer and she rushes to it. Two clicks and I am shaking. I have to find her. I have to find her. "I got the license plate number sir, give me one minute and I will find that location or at least who owns it."
What am I going to do if she is hurt-if I cannot find her. She's been through so much.
Too much.
She doesn't deserve a person like me. Why did I ever think I could love a person, a person so warm and loving who wouldn't hurt a fly. I am a monster just a fucking freak. I shouldn't have ever-"
"Sir," I turn to Odella. She is holding a piece of paper, and she's out of breath. "I traced the licenses place and I- it was so easy. This person...he-"
"Odella spit it out."
"Patrick Kinsman," she says and I'm out the door rushing without my men to get my wife back.
