lan’s face was as cool as a cucumber, as if his wife’s family fortune hadn’t run into any trouble.

Jeff could only sigh. It seemed that Mr. Raymond really wasn’t fond of his wife.

“Mr. Raymond, Holden has called twice, asking if you’ve met with Ms. Shepard.”

Holden was on high alert when it came to Carlene.

lan took the contract Jeff handed over, but he thought Holden should be wary of someone else.

lan had a ton of meetings every day. He never brought his phone into meetings, so he missed the calls

Holden and Carlene made earlier.

“Ms. Shepard has also invited you to visit her.”

“How’s Carlene’s recovery going?”

lan stared at the contract before him, not making a move. After a while, he asked Jeff, “Why would a

woman, even though her husband constantly cheats on her, still refuse to divorce him?”

If it came to figuring out algorithms, data, and losses, lan was second to none. But understanding

women wasn’t his strong suit.

His only two sexual experiences were both with Maja. They were quite the thrill.



But she didn’t want a divorce. She even defended her husband at every turn.

Jeff was caught off guard by the sudden change in topic.

After a few seconds, he responded, “I think the majority of married women just put up with it, especially

housewives. Penny might be competent, but I think she’s still stuck in traditional views of marriage. She

might see divorce as a failure or think a family isn’t complete without a man. Feminism has only

become popular in recent years. Penny might be independent at work but not in her relationships.”

lan was a very cool–headed person. He hadn’t looked into Maja’s family situation because he wasn’t

sure if his curiosity about her stemmed from physical pleasure or something else.

But what else could it be? He didn’t know her and didn’t plan on getting to know her. He was just

attracted to her allure.

In lan’s social circle, marriage was just a tool for two wealthy families to balance their interests.

The initial attraction between two people was always physical. Only later would there be the attraction

of knowledge, ideas, and souls. Love for a person evolved with these attractions.

But right now, he was certain he was only stuck at the shallowest level of attraction. So he didn’t feel a

strong urge to get to know her. But ironically, this shallowest level of attraction was the most painful.

To him, this was a lowly pleasure. He needed to know when to stop.

He furrowed his brows.

Jeff had been observing him in silence, not saying anything else.

After a while, lan picked up his pen again.

“Make sure the Pennyfeather family can’t reach Holden. If they do go bankrupt, it’s their fault.”



They couldn’t even see through such obvious deception. Such a company was doomed to fail. Survival

of the fittest, there was no need to feel sympathy for them..

Lately, Maja had been spending all her time at the hospital.

Partly to monitor Neil’s condition and partly to see who Carter might come in contact with.

But to her disappointment, barely anyone came to visit Carter. Even though he was now lying in the

hospital covered in bruises, Cristina was his only visitor.

But Cristina visited Neil even more. Each time she’d stand at the door crying.

Nurses came over multiple times to comfort her, assuring her Neil would wake up soon. But Cristina

only cried harder.

Tired of listening to Cristina’s crying, Maja picked up her bag and left.

But the moment she walked into the hospital lobby, she ran into Dana.

Carlene wasn’t staying at this hospital. Dana came here only because she happened to run into Maja

on the way and waited for her here. “Penny!”

She was so angry her eyes were red, “Did you get me fired?!”

Because there were so many people around, Dana’s shout attracted everyone’s attention.

Maja didn’t plan to engage with her, but Dana suddenly pulled a knife from her bag.

Maja was about to get in her car but saw the gleam of the knife in the reflection of the car window and

quickly dodged it.



Dana’s knife immediately struck the car, leaving a long gash.

Her eyes were bloodshot as if she’d lost all reason.

“It’s all because of you that lan fired me!”

She had just been to the Raymond Corporation today and received her termination notice!

It was all this bitch’s fault!
