Jacob's Game ✅
â·Chapter Tenâ·
Teresa lay in the bed staring at the brown wood roof of the cabin. Her fingers entwine together on her chest, while she counts on the amount of times she breathes in and out. She refused her brain from running around concerning the event that had taken place a while ago.
She'd discharged her wet clothes by the corner to wash later, and not hesitating to climb the bed while covering herself with a duvet gladly welcoming its warmth.
Teresa was thankful Gideon hadn't followed her like she stated. She was uncertain what she'd have done to him had he insisted on following her.
Maybe throw the closest thing she could find next to her on him?
She let out a long sigh. Closing her eyes for the first time since she entered the room, which probably was hours ago. She welcomed the tranquility the whole room gave her.
A short knock on the door made her eyes snap wide open, she whirl her head towards the direction of the wooden door. Teresa could already guess who it might be. A call from the other side of the door proved she was right.
"Teresa. Can I come in?" His voice reached her ear, while she wanted nothing to do with him for now. Giving him no reply, she shifted her gaze away from the door and returned her eyes closed back.
Taking her nonresponse as an approval. She heard the door creak open and heavy footsteps followed, the sound heading towards the direction of the bed she lay on.
"I didn't remember welcoming you in." She said, almost restraining herself from snapping at him, while still not blessing him with her gaze.
She heard his legs stop it movement for a while, before continuing his walk towards the bed. She felt the bed dip by her side. "Teresa, look at me." A small pleading voice came. The urge to comply with him, and obey was so great, but she just couldn't open them. Not when she was still very pissed at him, his brother and herself.
"Go away Gideon." She snapped his time around, turning her back to him. She heard him sigh, and the bed lifted up while standing on his feet.
"Daniel asked us to come pick him and Rachel up. His truck battery has run down." At the name of Grandpa Daniel she sat up, slowly letting the duvet slide down her body. Finally she gazes at him, not forgetting to shoot him a glare.
Teresa took in his attire. He wore a turtleneck gray top, opting to wear a black loose jeans trouser. Gideon's physical figure was just a little different from Jacob's figure. While Jacob has flexing muscular biceps, Gideon had muscular biceps also but not one that would fill one's eyes. His jawline wasn't as hard as Jacob's, and his green eyes weren't as piercing as his brother's impelling gaze that sometimes makes her squirm on her seat. Gideon's brown hair appeared rough and tattered like he had been pulling in it.
She noticed neatly folded bed sheets laying by the side he'd just sat. Her only guess was that Glenda had arrived to take care of the house.
Noticing her line of sight Gideon spoke. "Glenda came in a while ago. I told her about the extra sheets, and-" she didn't let him finish as she stood up from the bed abruptly, dragging her lilac sweatshirt down, while putting on her sandals.
"Can we just go. We shouldn't keep them both waiting" She interrupted him in a nonchalant tone. She was bored and tired of whatever he was saying. She saw him flinch at the hardness of her tone, a hurt look flashed in his eyes.
Nodding he led the way, while she followed. Walking down the last staircase, her eyes caught that of a very young lady in her early twenties, cleaning the marble island at the center of the kitchen, with one towel sling on her shoulder and another in her hand which was wiping the island, she could already guess was Glenda.
Teresa respectfully heads to the kitchen to offer her greetings. "Hi. I'm Teresa." She awkwardly said, grabbing the young lady's attention. Sea blue eyes captured her brown ones, almost knocking Teresa off guard at the beauty her eyes held.
Glenda's golden blonde hair bonded in a ponytail bounced as she straightened herself, smiling at Teresa warmly showing her open white teeth, with her pale white skin, which looked soft by the way. A beauty like Glenda doesn't volunteer to help people. She seemed like the celebrity type. Her cat-eyes twinkle in delight.
Glenda walked around the island to stand opposite her, catching her off guard the moment she pulled her for a tight hug. Immediately she pulled out. "I'm sorry." She apologized for her action. "It's just that Daniel keeps talking about you. It's almost as if I know you already." She rambles, her cheeks flushed as she scratches the back of her right ear in embarrassment.
Teresa gave a reassuring smile back in return. "I'd no idea he did." For the while since she entered the room, she felt relaxed. Whatever Glenda's response was, Teresa didn't pick as the familiar sound of wood cracking filled her ear.
Jacob was still axing the branch?
Asking an excuse from Glenda who smiled in return to resume her task, Teresa walked towards the door leading to the backyard, but was put to a stop by a large hand wrapped around her elbow. She glanced at her elbow before shifting her gaze on who it was.
Gideon shook his head in refusal. "Give him space." He said in what Teresa could identify as an insisting tone. She opened her mouth to counter his words, but came to a shut as he dragged her out of the house, letting Glenda know where they were heading to.
They both walked out of the cabin, while Gideon let her inside the passenger's seat of the SUV Jacob had hired for their stay here. She welcomed the leather scent of the seat, as she put on her seatbelt.
The expensive smell of it is almost too overwhelming. She shook her head clearing off the clouding fog in her head,as Gideon opened the door to the driver's side of the car, his perfume scent covered the whole atmosphere.
She moved her gaze to the window side of the seat refusing to stare at him. She could feel his gaze on her, but ignored it, as the plunging power of headache found its way to her head, making her pinch the bridge of her nose.
Thankfully he said nothing, but started the car, pulling them off away from the cabin compound. The car bumped on the stony side of the road, till they were on the highway.
Teresa felt guilty for pressing her stubbornness on Gideon, when he had always been there for her, provided a job for her, never failing to pay her on her payment day. Somehow she felt wrong for still being angry at him, if anyone was at fault here, it was Jacob. That guy was a persistent jerk, Gideon might just be a victim as she is, knowing how pressing of a person Jacob was.
She sighs, her mouth open to apologize for her behavior, but he beats her to it. "I'm sorry Teresa. I didn't mean for things to go this far." He whispered, his voice showing how remorseful he really felt.
Her eyes turned towards his direction, a sad look on his face boldly clear and visible. His hands clenching tight on the steering wheel making it white by the tightness. For a while she said nothing, but lifted her left hand to cover his cold hand.
"It's okay. Just let's not keep secrets from each other, you're my best friend. I'd hate to fight or argue with you. And again it's all Jacob, right?" She asked, impelling her gaze on him, she watched the shock on his face, as his mouth opened and then closed, as if wanting to say more.
She waited for him to respond, but his hesitation and his hand clenching the steering wheel tighter made her frown. Her small hand left his large ones.
"Is there something you aren't telling me?" She asked skeptically at his behavior and change of body language.
Immediately he shook his head, a smile in his lips, his eyes were distant as if he was deep in thought. "It's nothing, I just remembered what Jacob and I did while we were still young. I'm sure he wasn't childish enough to still keep to that." He spoke in a way as if he was trying to reassure himself.
Teresa glared at him. Wondering what their conversation had to do with both brothers' childhood memories. For a moment Teresa thought he must be losing his senses. But one of his hands reached to grip her hands that were resting in her laps.
Briefly he stared at her direction. "Thanks for forgiving my stubbornness and foolishness. It's just that Jacob and I were so desperate not to hurt Daniel's fragile heart. We were both blinded with worry. And Jacob accidentally spilling your name just made it more harder." He sighs, releasing her hand to rake his hair. "Please can you forgive Jacob. He might seem like trouble, but that's far from it. He-"
She cut him off. "Don't give excuses to him. I'd hate for both of us to start another argument. Just forget it, I'm done with him. I just can't wait for this one week to end." She said, giving no room for any further discussion.
Taking the hint he kept shut, focusing his attention to the road side. From a distance she saw Rachel leaning on the hood of the red truck, her arms wrapped around her chest. From what Teresa noticed she looked tired and stressed with the way her eyes were narrowed.
She heard Gideon murmuring. "There they are." As he pulled over when he got closer. Not waiting a second to jump out from the car.
Teresa smiled at how sweetly he reacted to his grandfather's predicament. It shows how much he really cares and worries, and she had seen Jacob react when he found out her plan to reveal everything to his grandfather. It shows how much he cares.
But deep down Teresa chose not to see the good side of him. It was better and easier to just see him as the bad guy.
Much easier.
