Jacob's Game ✅

✷Chapter Thirty-one✷

Jacob's POV

One week.

It's been one week since the accident. One week since Alexa's death, one week since Gideon fell into a coma while still in the bed, with a small chance of ever waking up.

Jacob could recall the dreadful phone call that day. After having a huge argument with Teresa, he tried calling Gideon concerning the matter, but it went straight to the voicemail. A couple of minutes later Jacob saw Gideon had returned the call back, unfortunately the voice he heard wasn't that of his brother.

A cop has called informing Jacob about Gideon's accident, and the death of one person present in the car.

Jacob has driven like a madman, not caring about receiving a ticket, straight to the hospital. He could remember how hot and cold his body felt, how he could hear his fast heartbeat in his ears, and how serious he was sweating.

The thought of losing his brother almost broke him, on his way to the hospital. The news about Gideon in the ER unsettled him greatly, including the news of Alexa's death.

Jacob cried deep in his heart for Teresa. He knew how much Alexa meant to her. He tried calling her though knowing she wouldn't pick up, but he had hoped she would. But she didn't.

He quickly called his parents telling them about the dreadful news. He could sense their pain and hopelessness, as they were far away from New York and not able to be with both their sons.

The cops had come to give a clear picture of what had happened to cause the accident. A failed brake, followed by the heavy rain contributed to the sad ordeal, making the car lose control and slam then rotate in the highway twice, followed by a car hitting a side of their car, probably Alexa's side killing her instantly.

The news had shook the entire media. The death of a well known popular author Alexa Rivera, and the still critical condition of her boyfriend broke the hearts of Alexa's fans and readers.

All this happened while Gideon was still in an ER.

Savannah had called crying her eyes out after seeing the news from the media, breaking Jacob's heart even more than before. He knew how much Alexa meant to her. He had seen how close they both were, their love so strong and natural.

The doctor came out of the ER bearing the sad news to a scared Jacob.

Gideon had sustained a bad hit on the back of his head causing a crack, and four broken ribs, a serious injury around his body, probably going to scar, a broken arm, and a dislocated shoulder, with both of his two legs broken. There was likely a less chance of him ever walking again.

It was a miracle he had survived, according to the doctor.

Now here he is sitting a few feet away from his unconscious brother's bed, staring blankly at nowhere entirely. Just filled in his own lonely thoughts.

"Here." A plastic disposable cup covered his sight. Jacob whirled his gaze towards the hands holding it up.

Gina Snow. His now sixteen years old younger sister, sitting at the vacant space beside him.

"Mom said I should give you this, since you refused to have any meal yet." She said, offering him a forced smile, her cornflower eyes sad and blank as she shifted her gaze towards where Gideon lay.

"Where's she?" Jacob asked, his voice rough and unfamiliar to his ears, while he took the possible ice-tea of her hand, not taking a sip from it.

Gina sighs, throwing her head back on the couch present in the private hospital room he had arranged for his brother. "Talking to Mr. Andrew." She sighs again with her eyes closed.

Teresa's father.

Jacob's sister and parents had arrived the next day late at night, after boarding the closest plane, along with Teresa's parents. Jacob was thankful for having his family close to him during the sad period, at least he had someone to lean on and share his pain with.

Mr and Mrs. Andrew kindly paid a visit to the hospital to check up on Gideon's latest results. While Teresa on the other hand was yet to come visit.

Apparently, she isn't taking the news well. She kept herself locked up in her apartment, with her parents staying with her, preventing her from doing anything stupid.

Jacob had wanted to go see her. But he thought best of doing so. She needed time. And he wasn't the number one person she would like to see.

He saw her once. During Alexa's funeral. She looked slim like she wasn't eating, she had huge dark circles around her eyes, her eyes lost the spark he had grown to love about her, only drops of tears rolling down her cheeks.

She was just the shell of herself. She had just lost someone very close to her.

Jacob wished he knew what was deep in her thoughts. The need to help release those pain in her eyes overwhelmed him. But there was nothing he could do but watch.

Jacob groaned out tiredly, pinching the bridge of his nose, while clenching his eyes close. He had just finished speaking to his secretary Rachel concerning things at work that couldn't be ignored any longer.

Moving his headquarters to New York had been easy, it took most of his time and strength. The stress of everything fell on his shoulders, including Gideon's state.

Gideon was a complete mess. Almost his entire body was covered in bandages, with rope from machines hooked on his body. The race to save him hasn't been easy.

Three days ago his heart had stopped beating, causing a huge miserable cry from each member of his family. Thankfully he was revived back, but there was still a likely chance of that happening again.

Jacob's mother slowly made her way inside, her eyes red from crying all day. Her shoulders were stiff and straight as she gazed at her almost dead son. She occupied the chair beside the bed, her hands reached to grab Gideon's left hand. She said nothing but stared at him for a long time.

Gina stood up from the space beside Jacob to meet their mother. She stood behind her, placing both her hands on their mother's shoulders.

Their mother immediately burst out in silent tears. Her shoulders were shaking as she dropped her head down to the bed. "Please don't leave me. Come back to me." She cried out in a weak shaky. Gina soon followed along.

It broke Jacob's heart, seeing his very strong mother like this. It hurt him deeply seeing his entire family like this. But what was life without a moment of sadness?

He needed Teresa. He needed her more now than ever.

Jacob stood up from the couch, picking up his jacket he had tossed by the side. "Is Teresa's father still there?" He asked his now calm mother, who had stopped crying her eyes out.

She lifted her cornflower eyes Gina got from her at him. She shook her head. "He left with your father. They went somewhere."

"What did he talk about?"

"He came to check up on Gideon and spoke about Teresa. The poor girl hasn't recovered. She blames herself for everything for reasons no one knows about." His mother whispered, her gaze kept on Gideon.

Jacob nodded his head. "I'm heading out." He muttered, leaning down to kiss the top of his mother's head, and Gina's temple.

Jacob's mother whirled her eyes on him, staring at him thoughtfully. "Are you going to tell me what happened to the both of you?" She asked, knowing about his relationship with Teresa. When he gave no response she sighs, removing her gaze away from him then back to his brother. "Make sure you eat. I don't want another child of mine admitted to a hospital." She instructed with a serious tone, her motherly care showing again.

"Don't worry about me. I'll be back soon." He said before leaving the room, while shrugging his jacket on walking determined steps.

It was about time he settled things with Teresa. They both needed each other. And he plans on being there for her and with her.
